In 2012, the Democrats came close to eliminating God from their platform. Delegates at that year’s convention in Charlotte proposed removing “God-given potential” from one of the platform’s passages. But Barack Obama, ever conscious of the need to con the faithful, ordered a vote in favor of retaining reference to God, which resulted in a fiasco on the convention floor. Los Angeles mayor Antonio Villaraigosa asked the delegates three times to accept the reinstatement of God in the platform. But loud boos followed each vote. The nays were louder than the ayes. Under great pressure to pass the amendment, Villaraigosa just lied and declared that “two-thirds” of the delegates had approved it.
On his campaign website, Biden has promised to eliminate all of Trump’s protections of religious freedom.
Rank-and-file Democrats were perfectly willing to ratify an unapologetically secularist platform, but party bosses, fearful of bad PR, resisted the push. At this year’s convention, party delegates took matters into their hands again, dropping God from the Pledge of Allegiance at two caucus meetings.
As David Brody reported:
CBN News has learned that the words, “under God” were left out of the Pledge of Allegiance at least twice at public meetings during the Democratic National Convention.
AJ Durrani, the moderator for the DNC’s Muslim Delegates & Allies Assembly, left the words out as their meeting got underway. There was no verbal resistance to the move at the time. Featured speakers at the virtual meeting included DNC Chairman Tom Perez, Senator Bernie Sanders (I-VT), and Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib.
Separately, at the LGBT Caucus Meeting, Dr. Marisa Richmond, a DNC delegate who identifies as transgender and teaches women’s studies at Middle Tennessee State University, led the Pledge of Allegiance but paused silently in the place of the words, “under God.” She was holding both the American flag and the gay pride flag, which dropped to the floor in the middle of the pledge.
Party bosses once again disliked the image this projected and downplayed the omissions. But in reality they foreshadow the chilly secularism to come under a Biden–Harris administration. The unsparing ethos of the ACLU, which seeks to scrub religion from public life, will pervade it. Recall that Obama placed on the courts militant secularists who consistently voted against religious freedom. One of them, Michael Urbanski, famously ordered that in public settings the Ten Commandments should be reduced to the Six Commandments, omitting the ones that mention God. That is a preview of the kind of jurists Biden would select.
Biden, for all of his talk about saving the “soul of America,” seeks to marginalize any real Christianity within it. On his campaign website, he has promised to eliminate all of Trump’s protections of religious freedom:
Religious freedom is a fundamental American value. But states have inappropriately used broad exemption to allow businesses, medical providers, social service agencies, state and local governmental officials, and others to discriminate against LGBTQ+ people. The Trump-Pence Administration has deliberately and systematically attempted to gut protections for the LGBTQ+ community by carving out broad religious exemptions to existing nondiscrimination laws and policies across federal agencies. Biden will reverse Trump’s policies misusing these broad exemptions and fight so that no one is turned away from a business or refused service by a government official just because of who they are or who they love.
Through Kamala Harris, who tried to keep a Trump judicial nominee off the bench for mere membership in the Knights of Columbus, we can already see what this promise will mean in practice. The religious freedom of any group opposed to gay marriage will be crushed in the name of “nondiscrimination.”
In the name of “nondiscrimination,” a Biden–Harris administration would in effect impose on all Americans a federal quasi-religion of secularism in violation of the First Amendment. The questions Kamala Harris threw at Trump judicial nominee Brian Buescher — which included, “Were you aware that the Knights of Columbus opposed a woman’s right to choose when you joined the organization?”—will be hurled at everyone.
“Kamala Harris is the future of religion,” declares the Religion News Service. Let’s hope not, or it won’t have one. According to RNS, Harris has “a kind of multifaith and spiritual belonging unfamiliar to the mostly white Christian majority of past decades.” It says, “She grew up in a home that accommodated both Christian and Hindu religious practices.” The fuzziness of her religion — she technically belongs to a Baptist church in San Francisco — fits with recent trends, according to RNS:
A Pew Research report last year found the United States is steadily becoming less Christian and the number of people with no religion is rising. Christianity still leads — two-thirds (65%) of Americans describe themselves as Christians — but white Christians are a minority, at about 42% of the country, said Robert P. Jones, CEO and founder of Public Religion Research Institute.
In that sense, said Jones, “The Biden-Harris ticket looks a lot more like America’s future and the Trump-Pence ticket looks a lot more like America’s past.”
The future of religion, in other words, isn’t very religious — just what the Democrats want in their quest to “transform” the country. Biden is a bad Catholic and Harris is a bad Baptist, and they want their fellow religionists to join them in their apostasy, thereby eliminating any resistance to their secularist agenda. Religion, they see, is an impediment to the left-wing totalitarianism toward which liberalism moves. The goals of liberalism require the suppression of religious freedom, and bigger and bigger government follows the diminution of God in public life. Only a real Christianity can serve as a buffer against unlimited, tyrannical government. That’s why liberals seek to neutralize or hijack it. They do not want one nation under God but one nation under secularism, a government in which they, not God, devise “rights” and determine the limits of freedom.
The Trump administration offered a reprieve from Obama’s secularist assault. But Biden and Harris will simply restart it. One would think, given the stakes in this election, the institution most likely to suffer under them, the Catholic Church, might issue warnings about the coming assault. But most of its bishops remain silent. Left-wing priests and nuns — Jesuit James Martin participated in the DNC’s proceedings — are actively supporting Biden. Donna Grimes, “associate director of African American affairs in the U.S. bishops’ Secretariat of Cultural Diversity in the Church,” has said that she is “elated” by Kamala Harris, who “brings a lot to the table” and will help those on the “margins.”
The most pro-abortion, anti-Catholic ticket ever, Biden and Harris will not help Christians on the margins but keep them there, all in the name of a secularist agenda alien to the Judeo-Christian foundations of the country.
