The State Department’s Inspector General has released its report chiding Hillary Clinton for her use of a private server to receive government e-mails, including classified information.
Although restrained in its language, the report takes the former Secretary of State to task for not having sought approval from various security agencies to set up her private server. This made her staffers understandably nervous, but they were told to keep their mouths shut.
Of course, Donald Trump will have a field day with this as well he should. If Bernie Sanders had chosen to have a field day about Hillary’s “damn e-mails” then perhaps he would be the nominee.
Still, I doubt anything will come of this at all. If the DoJ didn’t see fit to prosecute Lois Lerner then why would they touch Hillary?
The only scenario under which I could see Hillary being indicted is if she falls behind Trump by double digits. If Hillary becomes an albatross on Obama’s legacy then he might give the DoJ a wink and a nod. Obama surely isn’t too fond of Bernie because his critique is a critique of his presidency, but he will take Bernie over Trump ten times out of ten. The only other out is if Hillary suddenly catches a very bad cold like the old Russian premiers used to do before they were put out to pasture.
But as long as this is an issue and Hillary doesn’t get indicted, Trump need not insult another human being. All Trump has to do is say is that Hillary is above the law and remind people he is not under federal investigation. But Trump doesn’t like to keep things simple. Hillary Clinton is one unappealing presidential candidate, but she has the good fortune of running against an opponent who is even more unappealing than she is.
