Conservative provocateur Milo Yiannopoulos may not be able to appear at UC Berkeley, but he will be appearing on “Real Time with Bill Maher,” despite a leftist boycott.
Left-wing journalist Jeremy Scahill was scheduled to appear on the show but declined when he found out Milo would be a fellow panelist. Scahill said Milo “is many bridges too far.”
Maher, much to his credit, did not back down.
“If Mr. Yiannopoulos is indeed the monster Scahill claims — and he might be — nothing could serve the liberal cause better than having him exposed on Friday night,” Maher said. He added, “liberals will continue to lose elections as long as they follow the example of people like Mr. Scahill whose views veer into fantasy and away from bedrock liberal principles like equality of women, respect for minorities, separation of religion and state, and free speech.”
Let’s take a look at the claim that Milo is a monster.
In his statement explaining why he won’t appear on “Real Time,” Scahill claims Milo “has ample venues to spew his hateful diatribes.”
As for Scahill’s charge that Milo is racist, as Milo has noted, he dates men who are not white.
Then Scahill writes,
Yiannopoulos’s appearance could also be used to incite violence against immigrants, transgender people, and others at a time when the Trump Administration is already seeking to formalize a war against some of the most vulnerable people in our society. Yiannopoulos has shown he will use his appearances to publicly attack and shame specific ordinary people by name, a practice which could lead to violence or even death.
That’s a knee slapper!
First, where is the evidence that Milo has ever incited violence against anyone through any of his statements? There isn’t any.
All of the violence in recent months has come entirely from the political left, such as the violence that prevented Milo from speaking at Berkeley. And as for the war Trump is supposedly “formalizing,” it’s not clear what that means other than that Trump is going to start enforcing laws against people who immigrate here illegally. Well, enforcing immigration law is part of the president’s job description.
Scahill is clearly paranoid, and it was smart of him to not appear on “Real Time.” Not because of anything Milo has said or done, but because Milo would make a complete fool out of him.
