France Attacked on Bastille Day; 80 Killed
by

As you no doubt know by now a truck drove through a crowd of pedestrians celebrating Bastille Day in Nice. The driver also shot at people as he proceeded through the crowd. According to French President Francois Hollande, 80 people are dead at this hour. The driver was killed by police. He has yet to be identified except that he was a 31-year old Tunisian.

But whoever perpetrated the attack was certainly motivated by the same Islamic ideology which brought about the ISIS attacks in Paris 8 months ago. And for that matter the Charlie Hebdo/Hyper Cacher attacks in January 2015 or the March 2012 attacks in Toulouse. The method of attack is reminiscent of the ramming attacks we’ve seen in Israel and the one in Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Quebec that claimed the life of a Canadian soldier in October 2014 only on a much larger scale. Islamic jihadism is a global phenomenon, but a case can be made that its heartbeat in The West is centered in France.

Due to the attack, Donald Trump has postponed his VP announcement. No doubt he will renew his call to ban Muslim immigration and travel during next week’s Republican National Convention. President made his usual perfunctory statement condemning the act of terror without acknowledging how this terror came about. Obama reserves his rancor for Republicans, police officers and Israel. Ditto for Hillary Clinton whenever she decides to speak up.

Meanwhile, this won’t be the last attack of its kind. If anything, they will increase in frequency with the aim f desensitizing us into submission to jihad and Sharia law. While there’s a place for thoughts and prayers there comes a time when concrete action is required if we choose not to submit such a state of affairs. Such action would involve sacrifice including a significant loss of life in a struggle that will take generations. It remains to be seen if America and The West are prepared to make this sacrifice when it is unlikely to yield results for years to come.
