The first big story that made me suspect Stephen Glass was a fabulist was his New Republic yarn about the “First Church of George Herbert Walker Christ.” A church dedicated to Ronald Reagan I might have believed, or perhaps a house of worship devoted to the first-term George W. Bush. But Bush 41? The tall tale read like a parody of what a liberal might think of religious conservatives, as odd as if they had been worshipping John Danforth.
