A reader of these pages sent me a letter he had submitted to his local newspaper. I thought, particularly given the events of the past 48 hours, that others of you would find it worth reading:
Having just read Joan Mettler’s moving letter about the Wounded Warriors, I had to shake my head at the biased commentary that sullied her otherwise moving comments. I cry at the lessons that many on the radical left fail to learn, from the facts of history. I cry when I read the memoirs of General Nguyen Giap the leader of North Vietnamese Communist forces, who said, “You had us on the ropes. If you had pressed us a little harder, just for another day or two, we were ready to surrender!
But we were elated to notice your media was definitely helping us. They were causing more disruption in America than we could in the battlefield …” We lost and millions fell under the darkness of oppressive Communism. I cry when I learn that if the British and French had moved against Hitler when he marched into the Rhineland and the Saar in the 1930s, maybe the Second World War could have been prevented. If there wasn’t a need for a “policeman” then I can’t imagine when there would be. How many millions, of “ordinary citizens,” were sacrificed because of that horrendous failure to act? I cry because so many, misguided dreamers and ideologues, fail to see the lessons of history, that appeasement only leads to the empowerment of evil madmen and dictators. Even now, our failure to stop the madmen in Iran from developing nuclear weapons, can only result in one thing, catastrophe! When will we wake up?
How disingenuous and irresponsible to say that our warriors were, “plucked from their environment to serve in the military who were damaged or killed on orders from Pentagon officials seldom, if ever, in harm’s way themselves.” We have an all-volunteer military, they weren’t “plucked,” they heroically volunteered to protect their country! No one was “forced to defend their patriotism,” whatever that means!
They responded to the calls, not of Pentagon officials, but our elected officials who were responding to dangerous threats to our country, as called for by the Constitution! Those so-called “killing machines,” what an insulting term, are soldiers who are trained to defend us and that’s what soldiers do, kill the enemy, an enemy intent on killing our loved ones!
I cry at the hypocrisy of so many liberals who outwardly praise our uniformed men and women, when in their hearts they really despise their courage and outdated “unenlightened” patriotism. We honor all these heroes because, even despite all the derision from our “enlightened” leftist media and elites, they still heroically answer the call to duty. We should all thank God that our country has been blessed with such giants throughout our history, “ordinary” men and women, who have never failed to answer the call to defend liberty.
