Kyle Huwa at The Stanford Review has reported that 9th Circuit Court of Appeals Judge Nominee Goodwin Liu once served as a member of the Stanford University student body’s council of presidents. According to the report, his party, called the “People’s Platform,” called for “affirmative action policies, a ‘de-corporatized’ campus, and a more ethnically diverse staff,” opposed military research on campus, and wished for the school to cut ties with the Hoover Institution. The piece also claims Liu was criticized for his party’s focusing on off-campus issues, such as the party’s passing a resolution opposing the use of force leading up to the first Gulf War. Liu’s party was defeated the following year.
Liu’s classmates claim he was clearly liberal, but also acknowledge that he had a “smooth” temperament and a keen intellect. Given that his “Executive” experience was prior to his receiving legal training, it’s unlikely that it will affect his confirmation chances.
