Here in Pennsylvania, in the state’s race for governor, incumbent Democrat Governor Josh Shapiro has launched an ad campaign attacking the GOP nominee, State Treasurer Stacy Garrity. (RELATED: The Rising Star of Pennsylvania’s Stacy Garrity)
A Democrat governor attacking his GOP opponent in a hot election race is, of course, to be expected. What gives this situation an interesting twist is what Garrity is being attacked for.
That would be Garrity’s pro-life position.
The official PADEMS site attacks Garrity for saying that Pennsylvania needs a pro-life governor. Their headline: “STACY GARRITY IS A THREAT TO REPRODUCTIVE RIGHTS IN PENNSYLVANIA.”
To understand the irony in this Shapiro attack on Garrity, it is safe to say Shapiro and his party’s leadership are hoping Pennsylvanians have completely forgotten one of Shapiro’s seriously Democrat predecessors in the governor’s office.
That would be, of course, the late Democrat Governor Robert P. Casey. But Wikipedia remembers, and has profiled Casey (father of namesake former Penn. U.S. Senator Robert Casey Jr.) thusly:
Casey was best known for leading the anti-abortion wing of the Democratic Party, spearheading the opposition against Planned Parenthood v. Casey, a landmark Supreme Court decision on abortion. He championed unions, believed in government as a beneficent force, and supported gun rights.
…. Governor Casey was well known as a staunch Roman Catholic anti-abortion advocate.
…. In 1989, Casey pushed through the legislature the “Pennsylvania Abortion Control act.”
In other words? In other words, curiously, today’s GOP gubernatorial nominee, Garrity, is being attacked by Democrats for being — as was Democrat Governor Casey — “pro-life.”
Which leads to an obvious point. If Pennsylvania Democrats are going to make a point of attacking GOP nominee Garrity for being, like their own former Governor Casey, pro-life? Then it would seem logical that Democrats apologize for supporting Governor Casey in the first place.
Instead, the Shapiro campaign and the Pennsylvania Democrat Party are simply hoping (and praying?) that Pennsylvanians have forgotten their staunch support for the pro-life Democrat Governor Casey — whose support of the pro-life movement was the same then as that of today’s Republican nominee, Garrity.
Time has moved on. But the record is clear. Governor Casey was a staunch supporter of the pro-life position. Treasurer Garrity has carried on the support of the Casey position, which has made her the target of Democrat attack ads.
Leading to the obvious question. If Garrity is being attacked for having the Casey pro-life position, when will Democrats apologize for supporting Casey?
Answer? Don’t hold your breath. They are simply hoping Pennsylvanians have forgotten the late Governor Casey.
Interesting. Interesting without doubt. And one suspects Pennsylvanians will get more reminders on all of this as the election year proceeds.
