Fairfax County police say around 11:40 p.m., Gomez-Carreto approached the three people in front of El Catrin, a handgun in each hand, and opened fire, nearly killing the 52-year-old as bullets raked his upper body and less severely injuring the other two men – a 23-year-old from Falls Church and a 25-year-old with no fixed address – before fleeing in a car in an unknown direction.

This is the classic case in which someone would say, if the assailant had a license, guns make it easier to commit acts of violence. But what would have happened if a number of these folks had the benefit of concealed carry? Anti-gun activists suggest that we’d see a nasty fire-fight, but consider a world in which it’s more likely that people nearby have firearms on their person — do you think the assailant would take that risk?
