For months, Planned Parenthood has insisted that their fetal remains donation process, which appears to make them a great deal of money (despite claims that the money they received was merely a “reimbursement”), was a benevloent procedure, done out of the goodness of their cold, dark hearts. They insisted that the process depicted on the Center for Medical Progress totally misrepresented what Planned Parenthood was doing, keeping babies alive and hearts beating long enough to harvest vital organs, essentially for experimentation.
Now, after a grueling public relations nightmare that put Planned Parenthood on the defensive for months, leading into a Congressional investigation (that was ultimately derailed by Jason Chaffetz’s staggering lack of preparation), Planned Parenthood is calling time on their baby parts donation reimbrusement process, at least until they figure out another way to make money off their high holy sacrament.
Planned Parenthood Federation of America said it is immediately stopping taking reimbursements for procuring fetal tissue for medical research, an attempt to tamp down controversy that has led to Republican investigations in Congress and efforts to end federal funding.
Planned Parenthood President Cecile Richards said in a letter Tuesday to the National Institutes of Health that the organization’s affiliates will no longer accept any reimbursements for costs associated with procuring tissue from abortions. Fetal tissue has been provided by affiliates in California and Washington state, and the Washington clinics haven’t been taking any money for it, she said. The Oregon affiliate has been providing placental tissue for reimbursement. Planned Parenthood didn’t disclose the amount it will forgo with its new policy.
This is undoubtedly more significant than they will make it out to be (obviously, according to the Planned Parenthood lackeys, this is just the result of shrill Republicans standing in the way of scientific progress). Planned Parenthood came closer to being defunded this time than it ever has before. With the Affordable Care Act in play and community healthcare services expanding, Planned Parenthood finds itself little more than a “brand name” service provider, heavily outnumbered by people encroaching in their “safe space.” It’s not about women’s healthcare any longer since women can get the same healthcare for free from doctors who don’t treat them like animals. It’s only a matter of time before they end up on the wrong side of this argument.
This move also heads off state-based investigations into whether Planned Parenthood obtained more money for the fetal bits than was necessary to cover their costs in the first place. How convenient. Some states, of course, will continue to pursue prior claims.
