“Porn and Pizza”

Campus Reform reported yesterday that the Bisexual, Gay, Lesbian, Straight Alliance (BGLSA) of the University of South Carolina hosted a “Porn and Pizza” event on campus to promote “sexual health”:

According to a campus publication the Daily Gamecock, the event included a pizza dinner followed by viewing and analysis of both gay and straight pornography.

“If anyone is frightened by that title, the back door is still open,” BGLSA President Mason Branham told event attendees.

The goal of the event was to inform the audience about sexual health for both heterosexual and homosexuals.

Porn doesn’t promote sexual health, for one. Clearly, these students haven’t read about the HIV outbreak amongst porn actors in Los Angeles, prompting urgency in the consideration of a California bill to require every male porn actor to wear a condom.

This was a marketing stunt by the BGLSA to attract students who wouldn’t usually go to a gay-straight alliance meeting. The group didn’t use the school Wi-Fi, and they even checked IDs at the door to make sure everybody was over 18.

Unfortunately, neither the group nor USC’s media relations office responded for comment. I really wanted to read how porn promotes health.

In fact, pornography does the opposite. The industry takes a sacred act, one that intimately joins a man and a woman emotionally and physically, and degrades it to a level of banal studio recreation.

Porn should never be used as education; it is not even art. It is a degrading, primal show of stimulating acts for the purpose of hedonistic lust. It serves no purpose other than temporary stimulation.

If BGLSA of USC wanted to appear serious, they wouldn’t have used pornography as a marketing ploy. If they wanted to authentically promote sexual health, they would have coordinated with the school’s health department to describe a holistic perspective of human sexuality.

Alas, they targeted the lowest common denominator.
