Winter has taken a holiday and left the northeast to visit the once-sunny, now snowy west coast. Some here will be relieved to see Jack Frost take his leave, but those of this mindset simply don’t realize the long list of advantages bestowed by low temperatures.  

When it’s cold outside, for instance, people walk faster, which means they hurry out of the way more quickly. People are less likely to venture outdoors, so the streets, stores, and other places where they tend to crowd end up liberatingly vacant. Plus, only the very brave or the very earnest will undertake a trek in the tundra, so chances are the people you do come across will be worth meeting.

Winter is good for productivity. People get to their offices earlier and stay in them longer. Winter makes whatever place you’re going seem cozier and more inviting. Brandy and hot coffee are consumed with renewed appreciation.

People also look better bundled up. A handsome winter coat is an investment, and tends to be made of sturdier stuff than graphic t-shirts or mini-dresses — unsightly items that a winter coat also graciously covers.

A cheek flushed rosy-pink by chilly air and a brisk wind is charming and cute. A summer face made moist and blotchy by hot temperatures is neither of these things.  

California, count your blessings. And don’t stay away too long, Jack.
