Novak and Fund

Bob Novak confirms Fund’s earlier report that John McCain expressed hesitation with Alito. According to two of his own sources:

“Wouldn’t it be great if you get a chance to name somebody like Roberts and Alito?” one lawyer commented. McCain replied, “Well, certainly Roberts.” Jaws were described as dropping. My sources cannot remember exactly what McCain said next, but their recollection is that he described Alito as too conservative.

Novak further reports that McCain could even go squishy on taxes, according to other sources. His suggestion? Make a no-tax pledge at CPAC and set the record straight on Alito.

But the problem with McCain is that, a few years down the line, I doubt he would have any problem saying, “Well, that was then, but now we have a higher deficit.”
