Obama Bathrooms

by

Here’s a big reason you should favor limited government: Big government makes it much so much easier for crusaders to force the rest of us to pay the cost for their holy wars.

Unless you’ve been living under a rock today, you are aware that the Obama Administration sent a letter telling public schools that they must allow transgender students to use the bathroom of their choice.

This will no doubt have a big payoff for the lawyers at the Department of Justice and Education who drafted this nonsense. They’ll receive loads of praise from the MSM and maybe even an award from ESPN! They’ll move up to higher positions in a Hillary Clinton Administration. And if Clinton loses in November, they’ll move on to elite law firms in Washington, D.C. or six-figure jobs at “nonprofits” like the Human Rights Campaign.

While the crusaders will reap the benefits of their new, ahem, “policy,” it’ll be students, parents, teachers and school administrators who’ll pay the cost. You see, young boys can cause a lot of “mischief” that involves young girls (having once been a young boy myself, I know).  But in my time that mischief almost always stopped at the entrance to the Girls’ Bathroom—and if it didn’t, there were consequences.

But those consequences have now been swept aside by the Obama Administration, and it won’t be long before young boys figure it out. So young girls will have to experience the trauma of young boys charging into the Girls’ Bathroom with the cameras on their cell phones a blazing. Parents will have to deal with the fallout from that trauma. And expect teachers and janitors to have to deal with the fallout (or, rather, messes) when more young girls no longer want to use the bathroom.

That won’t be the only cost for teachers. They, along with administrators, will have to face the wrath of the federal government if they bar young boys from the Girls’ Bathroom, or face lawsuits from the parents of young girls.

For those of you who object that this is far-fetched, here is the definition of “Gender Identity” from the letter: “Gender identity refers to an individual’s internal sense of gender. A person’s gender identity may be different from or the same as the person’s sex assigned at birth.” On the schoolyard that translates to, “I feel like a girl, so I can use the girls bathroom because President Obama said so!”

And, for those of you who object that many of the costs listed above are things that already happen, well, that’s true. But the issue isn’t whether they happen or not; it’s the degree to which they happen. Unless the Obama Administration is stopped, these costs will get bigger.

In general, the people who pay the cost for making wrong decisions should be the ones making those decisions. In the case of who gets to enter which bathroom at public schools, it should be parents, teachers and administrators—in that order— who make that decision, not federal bureaucrats.

As the economist Thomas Sowell once said, “It is hard to imagine a more stupid or more dangerous way of making decisions than by putting those decisions in the hands of people who pay no price for being wrong.”
