Power Should Be Pilloried Over Israel Invasion Remarks
by

What has been largely overlooked with the fanfare of President Obama’s appointment of Susan Rice as National Security Adviser is his nomination of Samantha Power to Rice’s current post as Ambassador to the United Nations.

Power is perhaps best known for being forced to resign from the Obama campaign in March 2008 for referring to Hillary Clinton as a “monster”.

However, Power’s time in purgatory was temporary as she was named to Obama’s transition team following the election. She was subsequently appointed as a Special Assistant to President Obama and headed up the National Security Council’s Office of Multilateral Affairs and Human Rights. Last year, Obama appointed Power to head up the Atrocities Prevention Board, an entity which could not prevent a single atrocity in Syria.

Power’s most egregious statement came in 2002 when she called for an American military invasion of Israel likening the situation there to that of Rwanda. By the time Power was advising Obama in 2008, she called her own remarks “weird.” Well, I would add stupid, incoherent and dishonest.

After all, Power made a point of saying, “What we need is a willingnes to actually put something on the line of helping the situation. And putting something on the line might mean alienating a domestic constituency of tremendous political and financial import.” In other words, Power meant Jews. The essence of her statement isn’t much different than Chuck Hagel saying “the Jewish lobby intimidates a lot of people up here.”

But even Hagel never called for a military invasion of Israel. Unforunately, early indications are that Senate Republicans are willing to go along with Power’s appointment. John McCain praised Power as “well-qualified for this important position.” I can only hope that Ted Cruz ignores McCain once again and takes Power to task for her dubious remarks as he did with Hagel.
