CNN is projecting that Rick Santorum will win the Louisiana Republican primary, where voting just concluded. The exit polls point to a double-digit margin for Santorum over Mitt Romney, with Newt Gingrich in third place. The early exits show a broad-based win delivered by a conservative primary electorate: Santorum won Tea Party supporters by 16 points, self-described conservatives by 17 points, evangelicals by 32 points, and very conservative voters by 24 points. Santorum won Catholics, his coreligionists, by six points, though that margin than doubles among Catholics who attend Mass weekly.

Among the 39 percent plurality that wanted a candidate who could beat Barack Obama, Romney beat Santorum 48 percent to 31 percent. But Santorum took 72 percent of the voters who wanted a true conservative, with Ron Paul finishing second and Romney fourth. Santorum also beat Romney by 60 points among those who wanted a candidate of high moral character (Gingrich finished fourth among this group). Curiously, Santorum beat Romney by five points among moderate or liberal voters.

Those numbers may change when the final wave of exit polls come in and are recalibrated against the actual results, but that’s the basic picture. Santorum will take the bulk of the 20 delegates at stake, though Romney could still be in contention for as many as eight. The remainder of Louisiana’s delegates will still be unbound.

Ron Paul could manage only 6 percent of the vote in his neighboring state. Heck, the candidates who have dropped out had almost 2 percent.

Who cares, Romney loses in a state with a bunch of religious zealots. Mitt doesn't need these tea bag right-wingers anyway. Economics triumphs not these social issues so dear to these people.

Oh Yeah...? just who are you to cancel them out!
Look at the RCP numbers of total votes caste so far in this primary....
Conservative (Newt + Rick)=5062542
Romney...............................= 4127915
Rcp average
Conservative =44.4
Romney =37.6 Mar. 25, 2012

Santorum has only won states (most of them small) where the GOP could run a ham sandwich and win! in a large swing state, which the GOP must have? he goes SPLAT!!!!

Bill| 3.24.12 @ 9:33PM

Yet Santorum lost MI, OH, IL..................

Unger| 3.25.12 @ 1:26AM

Bill, Mr. Santorum just barely lost in those three. Ohio and Michigan were squeakers for Romney. If Santorum had been on the ballot in all places in Ohio, Santorum would have beaten Romney by 4% -- easily. Why be delusional on that? Ohio would be a "win" for Santorum under any fair voting procedure. The difference in Illinois would be smaller had Santorum been on the ballot in all counties there.

This "Campaign 2012" has been a hoax since Iowa. Virginia is the worst/best example. Only Romney and Paul on the ballot/no write-ins permitted.

Don't just look at the Win/Loss columns. That is stooge-level analysis and lazy-man's analysis.

Bill| 3.25.12 @ 2:01PM

Considering his home state pa in the corner of Rust-Belt, Santorum's defeat in OH and MI ultimately sealed the deal of 2012 GOP race.

you know what they call teams that 'barely lose?'

What the hell is a "True Conservative?" And how does a Pollster word that in a Poll?

"Do you prefer a True Conservative over a False Conservative?" YES ( ) NO ( )

By golly Antle, you were right! This is the silly season!

Mimi| 3.25.12 @ 12:31PM

A true Conservative is not Romney...TRUE one!
He won't even go on the a TRUE CONSERVATIVE'S radio program ....The Mark Levin Show....The mic's always OPEN !

Dan| 3.25.12 @ 2:00PM

Another guy who won't converse with Levin is present NJ Governor Christie.

Isn't that interesting.

rightasrain| 3.24.12 @ 11:07PM

I don't mean to denigrate Santorum's win, but he is increasingly irrelevant.

spike59| 3.26.12 @ 7:20AM

he's spitting in the wind, and can't figure out what that stuff is that keeps hitting him in the face

Orygun| 3.24.12 @ 11:46PM

Santorum once again proves that people are looking for someone who comes across as decent and dependable. There is a lyric in a song that goes "just give me someone to believe in." That is what people are looking for. They are tired of being told one thing and then the politicians do something else. Go Santorum!

Dan| 3.25.12 @ 12:14AM

No.

I want somebody way more than merely decent.

I want substance.

I want reform.

I want a record of real reform.

I want a guy who doesn't sound like a boob, who doesn't need journalistic chelas running around trying to make sense of what he said.

I want a guy who actually knows something.

I want a guy who understands how much the unions have damaged the country.

I want a guy who doesn't have to restrain himself from running off and chirping about social issues all day long.

Santorum doesn't fit anything, nothing other than the narrow and limited cause of stopping Romney.

Now I'm all for stopping Romney.

But I'm all against pretending to myself or anyone else that Santorum is remotely equal to the Republican nomination or the White House.

Yips| 3.25.12 @ 1:31AM

Okay, I'm not necessarily disagreeing, Dan. But who then? Who has some of what you list above and could/should run? Below you mention Mrs. Palin. Okay, perhaps her. But who else?

What figure at the national, state or big business or high academic or top engineering levels can step forward?

I ask the same all the time in my state and end up realizing that my state has no such men to offer. Maybe you have some names for us. If so, please divulge.

Dan| 3.25.12 @ 11:33AM

We have to drag somebody else into this race.

There's no other option.

We have to create a floor furor.

This country is up against it, and we can't have our genuine reformers on the sidelines, while entrusting the country to Romney and men unequal to the challenge, unequal to the office, unworthy of our trust.

Our party has three proven reformers, who've accomplished things that others never tried, never envisioned. EACH of them you'll notice has what has come to be called "baggage."

One is Giuliani who turned around a city all had written off. He took that city from a nightmarish version of "Escape from New York" to the safest urban area on the planet.

Another is Gingrich, whose accomplishments can't be summarized succinctly.

The third is Palin.

Isn't it just amazing that these three people get our own establishment as much in a rabid frenzy as they get the Democrats.

We've got to realize our selection process has let us down, is almost designed to select people who will fail us, who deceive us.

Santorum is exaggerating his record almost, not quite, but almost as badly as Romney. Now he's not a flopper on abortion to be sure, and he's more steadfast on some issues, again, to be sure, but he's not the conservative he's claimed to be during this lengthy primary season.

And that's a fact.

We can't go with either of these two men.

I would prefer to battle it out for Palin then to waste time battling for men unequal to the office, unequal to the economic crisis we're in, unequal to the vast overhaul Washington needs.

spike59| 3.26.12 @ 7:25AM

Palin? PALIN????? exactly what planet have you been inhabiting? all due respect to Gov Palin, but it's time to face reality-the only people who can stand her anymore are dyed-in-the-wool conservatives; she energizes the Left to open their checkbooks and get to work, and the moderates and independents have bought into the MSM narrative-she'd barely top the 'DrRonPaul threshhold' of a 20-25% defeat in the general election

it's not a 'battle' when you pull the pin, tuck the grenade in your own lap, and pray it won't hurt much

Dan| 3.25.12 @ 12:11AM

I just watched the movie about former Governor Sarah Palin, "UNDEFEATED."

And compared to her, compared to her accomplishments, compared to the things that she rammed through, the battles she's fought, compared to her, Rick Santorum isn't worth anything, and hasn't done anything, and isn't worth spit.

What the hell are we doing wasting so much as a nanosecond of our existence on this guy who has done nothing, absolutely nothing.

Except that is carry George W. Bush's water for him in the U.S. Senate....

Mender| 3.25.12 @ 11:21AM

If I asked Santorum what newspaper he reads, I bet I'd get a straight answer.

Palin is clueless.

Dan| 3.25.12 @ 11:25AM

If you asked Santorum what he accomplished in his years in the Senate, ----- bet you'd get him squirming and spinning.

Ask Palin what she did during her tenure as Governor, --------- and you get ethics reform, pipeline constructions, redistribution of oil royalties and opening up a field that had been unworked for thirty years, the Point Thompson project.

Palin has a genuine list of accomplishments.

But if you prefer to take your reading of her, what she has to offer, what she's accomplished from SNL and such others, --- then you're hopeless.

And you deserve Santorum, the right hand man of Trent Lott.

spike59| 3.26.12 @ 7:27AM

But if you prefer to take your reading of her, what she has to offer, what she's accomplished from SNL and such others, --- then you're hopeless.

====================
that's the trouble; in the mind of the American electorate, THAT'S who she is; you can grieve over her political carcass all you want, but it won't bring her back-for the MSM, it's "mission accomplished"

Mimi| 3.25.12 @ 12:46PM

He's got the GUTS to RUN....at gross sacrifice I may add. He's a truly decent Man and would do great by this country. He's has accomplished a lot going door to door and having little monies.
The numbers show if Newt got out...he surely would take off and just maybe catch the TAIL !
See my above post on todays numbers on Real Clear politics. A strong Conservative , would take off like a rocket....people would come out from nowhere to defeat Obama...I have no DOUBTS on that.
I love Newt...but God want his hands , working for the Nation in some other place...not burdened with the Presidency...he is greatly needed!

Dan| 3.25.12 @ 1:58PM

Is it "guts," or is it a prolonged ego trip?

Is it "guts," or does he delude himself he's out in the fields of the Lord?

He hasn't the record, the accomplishments, the persuasive powers, the money, -- he has nothing that should have led him into this race.

Nothing.

He had no clamoring for him to enter the race, as had former Governor Palin, Rep. Paul Ryan or Governor Jindal.

We wouldn't have missed out on anything had he not entered the race.

Nor has he any singular idea that warrants him entering the race so as to forward it before the nation.

There isn't anything that he's pushing that others in the party haven't pushed.

So what is he in the race for?

He needs to go away.

And he needs to take Romney with him, for he's another guy who has no business seeking the nomination of the GOP.

gearjammer| 3.25.12 @ 5:10PM

He will write a book and cash in after it is over. When is the last time he had a real job ?

spike59| 3.26.12 @ 7:29AM

even if Newtie got out, (self)Righteous Ricky would need 74% of the delegates to win the nomination...where, pray tell, do you think he's going to find them-CA? NJ? NY?

Clint| 3.25.12 @ 12:32PM

I supported Rick Perry until he dropped out and now I enthusiastically support Governor Romney .
For those unhappy with Gov Romney or any of the other choices ,the time to lay the groundwork for another candidate
was three years ago .
That was the time to start fielding a candidate , fundraising and getting the ground game in place .
The time to begin planning for 2016 is now .
It's completely unrealistic and self defeating to begin a campaign a few weeks before an election , which is exactly what the brokered convention crowd wants.
The reality is that one single candidate has gotten the majority of Republican primary votes
( 4+ million ) and that candidate will be the nominee .
Another way to look at it is that 7 million Republicans have voted for a candidate other than Santorum,
who has gotten 2 million votes.
Obama has raised $ 163,000,000 so far for his reelection , with $ 85,000,000 on hand and he still has 7 months to go .
A fantasy Republican nominee to emerge from the convention on Sept 1 , would have
raised $ 0 dollars.
There is a segment of the Republican party that would rather complain about Romney than defeat Obama.
They did the same thing in 2008 with McCain.
As they will in 2016 .

GOP in trouble in VA over pro life extremism. That little stunt may have cost us any chance for 270, But hey, keep putting your heads more deeply in the sand. The author of the above piece ducks the hard reality like the VA fiasco. Vaginal Probe-the democrats will name a cocktail after and drink them to celebrate O 's 2nd term. Such blind fools.
