The Spectacle Blog

For several years, Jane Hamsher and her site Firedoglake have been a loud voice of the take-no-prisoners "progressives," cheerleading the 2006 Ned Lamont campaign against Joe Lieberman.

Now, Hamsher is crying foul over the Senate health-care bill -- this was not the Change she voted for -- and getting a lot of ridicule from conservative bloggers like Ace of Spades. Meanwhile, some of her progressive pals are excoriating Hamsher for having appeared on the eeeevvillll Fox News. William Jacobson observes:

While Hamsher is ultra-liberal, she points out that the Senate bill will lead to increased costs on the middle class. Sure, Hamsher may be harping on a point that is not key to her agenda, but she recognizes that she needs to appeal to more conservative voters if she is to kill the bill.

This is a case of the Left understanding -- for its own reasons -- why the Senate bill is a monstrosity. As I mentioned the other day, at least the left-wing has some principles, even if I disagree with those principles.

The kind of disillusionment that Hamsher is now experiencing can have transformative results. David Horowitz and Peter Collier, New Left radicals in the 1960s, famously had "second thoughts" that led them into the conservative camp during the Reagan era. Tammy Bruce, a former NOW activist, has become a popular conservative talk radio host. And let us not forget that Ronald Reagan was himself once a self-described "hemophiliac liberal."

It remains to be seen whether Hamsher's current disillusionment will be powerful enough to cause her to reconsider her "progressive" commitments. But public opinion polls indicate that the disappointments of the Obama era are already yielding a bumper crop of those whom I called, three weeks after the 2008 election, "Future Ex-Democrats."

That's a funny one, Hemophiliac Liberal, never heard it before. Gives new meaning to the term bleeding heart Liberal..

It is interesting how they "come around" when they want to. And that's just it. It's when they want to. Because they already know in their minds that Liberalism is wrong.
I love David Horowitz, love listening to him talk because he is so in his right mind. (He wrote a new book about his daughter recently). And Tammy Bruce is amazing to listen to, I've heard her on the radio. She's a real firebrand, tells it like it is.
It must feel really great to ex-Libs when they finally give up the phoniness and start telling the truth. Conservatism is just plain old common sense with freedom at its base, anyway!
~so, Ms. Hamsher, take a good listen to your former friends from your side who came on over. You'll be more than welcome, and in great company!

Yeah it must be a real drag to suddnely wake up one day in Obama land to find out the lies you supported are really the truth disguised as common sense. Maybe there is hope for these unrulely mobs of people claiming to care for the down-trodden. Maybe, just maybe there is a light at the end of their tunnels. We can only pray.

Franklin| 12.24.09 @ 11:49AM

Ret. Marine, you're so right. Prayer does work and not just for poor liberal souls lost in the wasteland of fairytale communist utopia. We need it too, to keep our sanity!

My brother turned from the dark side several years ago when he started working as a manager in a small business. He saw first hand what his liberal government was doing.

My best friend has also turned, but more recently. She started watching FOX NEWS and the more she watched, the easier it was for her to see that she had been fed a pack of lies from the MSM.

One viewpoint I don't see or hear much about is what the Bible says about lies and people who believe them. The 'father of lies' has been working overtime lately. His MO is to tell the truth mixed with just enough lie that it is easily believed. The more they believe, the more truth can be eliminated and it just becomes a lie. But the people don't see it that way; they see it still as truth.

But they know deep down that it’s a lie, but they have chosen that over the truth. God knows that they made their choice. Here is the hard part: He knows what they chose, so he allows them that choice (free will). Once that decision is made, God allows them their full delusion, he won’t intervene.

Romans 1:28 Furthermore, since they did not think it worthwhile to retain the knowledge of God, he gave them over to a depraved mind, to do what ought not to be done.

2 Thessalonians 2:9 The coming of the lawless one will be in accordance with the work of Satan displayed in all kinds of counterfeit miracles, signs and wonders, 10 and in every sort of evil that deceives those who are perishing. They perish because they refused to love the truth and so be saved. 11 For this reason God sends them a powerful delusion so that they will believe the lie 12 and so that all will be condemned who have not believed the truth but have delighted in wickedness.

The only thing we can do for them is to pray that God gives them another chance and allows them to see the Truth. What they do then is still up to them, but we must be diligent to pray. We do not know when God will work a miracle, but I know he does.

As much as I hate what they are doing to this country, I pray for our leaders to see the Truth.

The old saying, "A conservative is a liberal who just got mugged." Well, we have all been getting righteously mugged since January (and before, some might argue). Let's hope that now that the confetti has blown away, and that Hope and Change is being shown to be the Big Lie, that people, ordinary citizens, will be painfully stirred into full wakefullness and action. Hopefully, this large dollop of tyranny will turn the tide.
