The Spectacle Blog
Diane Francis, Editor-at-large for the National Post, contributes this pure drivel to the commentary page of the Financial Post. She argues that a “planetary law, such as China’s one-child policy, is the only way to reverse the disastrous global birthrate” and stem the tide of global warming.
She complains that world leaders in Copenhagen “don’t even have this on their agenda,” and worries that unless governments limit couples to one kid, the human population will decimate the planet and wars over “water, scarce resources and spatial needs” will erupt.
The only problem: Ms. Francis has two kids (I mean, carbon emitting units) herself. Worse, her sister also has two kids.
Oppps.
Blatant hypocrisy aside, how would Ms. Francis intend to implement an international one-child policy? It might work in leftist European nations already committed to erasing their populations through rampant birth control and abortion, but Muslim nations would send the U.N. child police home in a body bag, probably headless.
With a world population of 6.7 billion, good luck with this one.

I admit I'm a lib; it looks like the US banking system could have benefited from some "control". The Canadian Banking system desperately wanted a piece of the pie before everything went bust world wide but were not allowed due to being regulated. They are now held up as a model of how to bank properly. IF the US banking system had more regulation it wouldn't have need the massive taxpayer bailout...

Diane Francis is one of the most respected writers in Canada and in North America. I think she was making a slightly ironic argument...not necessarily "let's go out and do this now." She has a point -- really. While Americans are blatantly promoting 8 kids -- or better yet 12 -- I find this has nothing to do with Liberal or Conservative ideology. More like Smart VS Stupid, since most of these morons having all these kids need government support to pay for them. And as someone who hates too much government in my life...I would rather see the latter. Better yet, give these parents a test to see if they qualify to have kids.
Is that what Conservatives in the States would like, David, to pay for 12 kids out of your own pocket??

Hitler wrote in Mein Kampf that the eugenics policies of sterilizing the Indians, the poor and the mentally handicapped in the 20's was a real source of inspiration for him. Um, it is Communist China which has the one child policy the lady does like and proposes. It is a point about which many commentators here are somewhat confused. Perhaps Chinese Communists are not really communists much as it is said that National Socialists are not really socialists.
I suppose if only the bad "right wing" people who use the good words of communism and socialism would stop attaching it to the evil "right wing" the world would be able to get to "true" communism and socialism. Yah. Right.
Still, Adolf Hitler in fact wanted many more children. Oodles of them! He just wanted perfect aryan german children. The other children were, of course, expendable, so that there might be Lebensraum (living room) for the good Deutsche Brood to fill.
Darwin merely pointed out that children (of any species) will have mutations that are passed on to their children, and that children with no children of their own will not pass on their genes. And also that less and less children, below the replacement rate, is called "extinction of the species." He did not say if extinction is a left or right wing issue.
The Dinosaurs, though, did try the one child rule, and look at what they got: a bunch of bird brains.
Which I suppose is the ultimate goal of the Diane Francis types who think We the People are screwing up our planet -- wherever anyone thinks she lies on the political spectrum based on the protagonists in Revolutionary France of 1789. Nothing like "modern" concepts to fill the voids of thought in our modern world, eh?

Diane Francis proves that it is quite possible to be intelligent and well-educated, and at the same time be a complete and total jerk. In fact, some of the stupidest ideas imaginable often come from academia and Ms Francis is a perfect example.
A totally uneducated simple labourer exhibits more common sense than Francis.
How can this be?
Well, I maintain that obtaining a "higher" education in today's colleges is synonymous with surrendering your native common sense in exchange for a brain-washing by radical leftist tenured "professors" who received THEIR education during the radical sixties and who now have taken over the higher educational systems of the Western World.
The same goes for today's mass media of newspapers and television news by and large.
When parents spend their hard-earned money sending their kids to college today they sure get an education: Besides leftist ideology, they are educated in sexual experimentation, immorality, elitism, and disrespect for tradition, religion, ethics, honesty, etc.
It takes a good two to three decades of real life and maturity to nullify the negative effects of a modern college education. In this respect, Diane Francis strikes me as being particularly retarded.
Hopefully, Ms. Francis will eventually grow up, mature and finally give up her elitist, pseudointellectual drivel.

China is successful because they still have something called respect passed on to their kids, unlike the current hoodlums coming out of universities and colleges in North America. I am tired of people thinking that controlling 1.3 billion people and their populations is only because they want to "control" their people like Hitler.
There is major science to back up the claim that the world is overpopulated -- this is not made-up drivel Martin.
And, boy oh boy do people overreact to one little article in a newspaper opinion piece. Do you honestly think they could ever control populations like that here? Impossible. What the government could do though is say fine, we will help out with one child -- you are on YOUR OWN for the other! If you all agree to that, then so be it.

The Chinese are successful because they are tolatarian regime that rules by fear and retribution against family members if anyone speaks out against the governing elite. Also with one point three billion citizens or about one fifth of the world population they are the biggest threat to mankind. Them and countries like India where government takes no responsibility for nine tenths of it's citizens. So stop blaming the developed countries for all the evils in the world the rest just want what we have and they are destroying everything in their greed take it. The only reason the developing nations want a climate change agreement is so their dictators can continue to sit on their lazy butts and collect handouts from the western civilized countries.
