The Spectacle Blog

After I reported here yesterday about 4 Lakewood, Wash., police officers killed in an ambush, police identified Maurice Clemmons as a "person of interest" in the case. Clemmons, 37, is a violent felon from Arkansas who was granted clemency by Gov. Mike Huckabee in 2000.

It's the biggest story of the day at Memeorandum, Michelle Malkin has blogged it extensively, and I've been up all night live-blogging about a SWAT standoff in Seattle, where Clemmons is reported to be holed up and bleeding.

…the former Massachusetts governor “only” released a killer who went on to rape.  Gov. Huckabee had a penchant for releasing criminals who go on to murder.  Including, apparently, the four Washington State police officers yesterday.  Not exactly the best qualification for running for president. What I hate most about Commies (not goo goo marxists) is they defend murderers such as Mumia, Leonard Peltier, and worst of all Hurricane Carter, a triple murderer who got sprung by Bob Dylan championing him 9 years after the killings.
And if Mumia and Peltier are innocent, then so is OJ, and so were McVeigh and Jack Ruby.
You see, it wasn't Jack Ruby in the police station, it was Little Bo Peep.

*Dylan wrote a song about Hurricane in '75, but Carter wasn't sprung until decades after the song was released.

Huckabee is...how shall I say...TOAST.

bluecollarbytes| 11.30.09 @ 9:07AM

Huckabee has called this a failure of law enforcement and the courts. Good thing he didn't encourage Maurice Clemmons' murderous career by offering clemency. He might then be called an opportunist who takes the credit while denying his debts.

Bad judgment, a lack of balanced discernment. A knee-jerk transfer of blame to others. We already have one of these in the White House.

Pete2| 11.30.09 @ 9:19AM

Never cared much for Huckabee myself, though my kids support him. I cannot understand why he would try to put the onus on others when he was as much to blame with his clemency. Isn't he supposed to be a "christian"? I have to agree with bluecollarbytes.

So Huckabee is flamed out due to his own foolishness and devotion to soft, therapeutic religious fundamentalism. Glad he's finished. Violent criminals belong in prison not free on the streets hurting folks. Think Willie Horton.

So it looks like Mitt Romney against Sarah Palin for the 2012 nomination. It should prove interesting but I expect Barack Obama will be the one smiling at the end of the day, first Tuesday in November 2012.

Jay Stevens| 11.30.09 @ 9:58AM

The sound in the distance that you hear is Huckabee's presidential aspirations going down the drain.

A lot of conservatives refuse to understand that the far Religious Right, like the far Religious Left, has a willful inability to deal with the reality that crime is learned behavior. Since even the worst criminals can be redeemed, they need compassion in the form of a blank slate. That goes for expunging one's criminal record.

Fools! Don't trust the Mike Huckabees of this world. Dostoevsky and Nietzsche each knew human nature far better.

You are so right.
Real Christians are forgiving but also know that the price for committing a crime has to be paid. This is why there is a death penalty. God values every human being He created. Whether or not that person themselves was evil or not. He "invented" the death penalty. It is because He is the Creator, and no one has the right to destroy what He (the I AM WHO I AM) created.
How so called Christians like Huckabee and Bill Clinton (who both pardoned hundreds of criminals), can call themselves Christians, can only be chalked up to delusional, in my opinion.

bluecollarbytes| 11.30.09 @ 7:47PM

Huckabee's 'forgiveness' seems more political calculation than 'religious right'. It doesn't resemble anything from any 'religious right' group I was ever a part of. They knew everyone sinned (born into it), but that crime is chosen. I suppose any criminal worth his loot would also 'learn crime', learn the trade. The religious right I know puts the blame specifically on willful bad guys choosing to do evil, with special mention going to enablers.

Derek Leaberry| 11.30.09 @ 11:52AM

Wise words, Seek. Huckabee is the sort of a Christian who would parole Mansonite Tex Watson, who killed Sharon Tate and her unborn baby. Watson has become a Christian, you know. Watson may have seen the light and that is good. And it is good that he finishes his life in prison and not in freedom.

Ken| 12.1.09 @ 7:42AM

Not sure of the number he commuted sentences for, but I did read that he reduced this mans sentence from 95 (or 108) to 43. Then, after just a few years, someone let him out. 43 years is still a long time people. Why did the parole board let him out? Get beyond your myopic political views and ask for some details. Commuting is NOT pardoning. 43 years is NOT released.

Margie| 12.1.09 @ 1:24PM

You're right. Today Mr. Huckabee released a statement explaining exactly the situation at the time. The man in question was 16 yrs. old at the time and Huckabee commuted his sentence from over 100 yrs. down to 40-something, with time served of 11 yrs. He was in, at the time, for burglary and robbery. Here's his statement:
