NATO members' reluctance to assume a larger role in Afghanistan
is partly the legacy of U.S. military protection, which allowed
Europeans to stress social programs over defense for decades,
the Greek ambassador to the United States said.
"For 40 years, you have a system [of] not bothering about
military, security and stability expenses," Vassilis Kaskarelis
told editors and reporters of The Washington Times. "Because
these issues were handled by the United States after World War
II ... everybody was happy."
Everybody is no longer happy. It's time to adopt some
international welfare reform and get the cheats off of the backs
of American taxpayers.
And then no one will be focusing on security. That isn't a good
option either. I'd rather pay for international security than
more "stimulus" for Osama's buddies or new F-150s for my
neighbors.

It is inconsistent to preen and pose as though one opposes
economic redistribution, and then demand that the U.S. government
confiscate money earned by Americans and give it to nations who
fail to earn it themselves.
End personal, corporate and foreign-state welfare.

After 50 years of having US military bases in Europe, I modestly
propose that it is time for the Europeans to have military bases
in the US.

That is why the Europeans and Canada have been able to play with
socialism: we underwrite their defense. The US can not afford the
folly of experimenting with socialism, though that seems to be
the direction we're headed.
