What is driving Drudge to seclusion? Those who know him say that
part of the reason he has disappeared from public view is that he
is so bothered by the media's prurient interest in his personal
life. "He wants no part of a lot of this," the friend told me.
"He sees it as nonsense. He doesn't have respect for the way
people have tried to write about him."
(Via Gawker
and Memeorandum.)
The New Republic expends a lot
of lurid speculation on the "is Drudge gay?"
angle, which also excites New
York magazine. But this completely misses
what I believe is the real explanation for his reclusiveness: He
values his editorial independence, which he fears would be
compromised if he spent too much time schmoozing with journalists
and politicos.
If you're not in the news business, you've got no idea how
important Drudge has become. Getting your story linked at
The Drudge Report is
more important to a reporter's reputation nowadays than getting a
Pulitzer Prize. If Drudge spent his evenings and weekends on the
cocktail-party circuit in Georgetown, Manhattan or Brentwood, his
media "friends" who invited him to those parties would expect
favorable treatment, and he doesn't want to be compromised by
such obligations.
Drudge has always seen himself as an outsider, and clearly
became uncomfortable with his sudden celebrity after
he broke the Lewinsky scandal story in 1998. Being perceived
as conservative made him a target of vicious gossip, as
Ann Althouse says: "Lefties love to think the righties they
can't tolerate are intolerant."
Drudge has had all the personal publicity anyone could
ever want, and more. He has no interest in becoming just
another bold-faced name in the gossip columns like
Donald Trump or Lindsay Lohan. His resistance of the temptations
offered by the celebrity culture is quite admirable,
even if it is unfathomable to the shallow hacks at The New
Republic.
Robert Stacy McCain is in denial, or just plain trying to cover
for Drudge. Drudge should be outed because he is allied with
political and cultural interests that oppress gay people. I find
the accounts of his activities in the gay community to be highly
credible since most are from former close friends of roommates of

be outed as the self-loathing gay man he is.

"Drudge should be outed because he is allied with political
and cultural interests that oppress gay people." What a
freaking larf! Cae to do an exposé on those "political and
cultural interests", Jabbo?
OK, let's "out" Matt: He's not a Liberal. He's not even a
Conservative or a Libertarian... He's (gulp) an entrepreneur with
individualistic tendencies. (oh my g-d! what a pervert!)
So what if he turns out to be gay? UMMM, we care? Does
anyone care, really, and does it even matter whether he
dates women, men, or goats?
Earth to Javier... Once you've gotten yourself a life, do come
back and tell us why it matters, OK?
Bite me, Javier. "As long as Drudge aids and abets homophobia
. . ." What exactly does that mean? Such a statement is
entirely dependent on the pejorative connotation of "homophobia,"
which is one of those smear words whose meaning gets too little
scrutiny.
Do you mean to say, Javier, that all heterosexuals suffer from a
mental disorder characterized by an irrational fear of
homosexuality? Or does that word apply only to opponents of the
political agenda of radical gay-rights leaders? How is it that a
disagreement over a policy issue like same-sex marriage results
in this diagnosis of mental illness among more than half the
electorate?
Crusader| 4.22.09 @ 9:59AM
Homophobia literally means a "fear of man." By that definition
aren't lesbians homophobic? I always like to use the left's
terms/arguments againt it. So if I disagree with homosexual
marriage it is because of a mental disorder based on an
irrational fear? Hmmmm, what about folks on the left who disagree
with private gun ownership? Based on an irrational fear/mental
disorder too?
Anyway Ran is right, we don't care if he dates men, women, or
goats. Now, when he demands society recognize as normal the
dating or goats, or the marrying of goats, well, that's
different. :)

RSM - you're punching below yourself - let the story speak for
itself as the reply to Javier. The quote in the portion you
quoted is sufficient.
" "He sees it as nonsense. He doesn't have respect for the way
people have tried to write about him." "
Why do people read Drudge - for the news. Why don't people read
the NYT - for the nonsense.
Does Javier have deep seated, and even emotionally motivated
concerns about this? Apparently. Do they matter one bit in
relation to the news or nonsense as reported by Drudge or the
NYT? No.
Well said, Crusader. The knee-jerk accusation of "homophobia"
against conservatives is a variation of the Adorno/Frankfurt
School tactic of smearing conservatives as latent fascists. This
tactic was given mainstream currency by Richard Hofstadter's
"paranoid style" thesis -- a concept clearly intended as a smear
against the Goldwater movement.
The amazing thing is that, despite the Left's decades-long habit
of employing the Adorno/Hofstadter smear, so many conservatives
have never learned to recognize -- and to denounce -- this
dishonest tactic for what it is.
Homophobia is the wrong word. The right word is
"homo-I-really-don't-care-ia." Most people don't hate. They just
don't want to be bothered by all this. We've got lives to live.
MikeM| 4.22.09 @ 10:22AM
Crusader, "homo" is a Greek prefix meaning the same--as in
homogeneous, homologous. Homosexual means one who is sexually
attacted to the same sex. Homophobia therefore literally means
fear of the same. It is my opinion that imprecise use of language
is a symptom of unclear thought. As a libertarian, I say live and
let live.

Javier is typical of how far the Gay Community has sunk in their
willingness to be lapdogs for the Left.
1) Just because a man is gay is no reason to out him in the hope
that somehow that will change his views.
2) Why do the gays support a movement - Liberalism - that defends
dictatorships, Communism and Islam - all three of which actively
and publicly repress and kill their gay members.
Conservatives and Christians have a problem with gays as a moral
issue. There is no reason to believe rightwingers or Christians
will hunt down gays in a Western country and kill them nor are
gays in any danger in the West of serious oppression.
Try this - go to the countries Obama and the Liberals in this
country support - Iran, China, any of the South American
dictatorships and try organizing a gay rights march there. See
how long you last.
Your problem is not Drudge. Your problem with Drudge is that he

Well said RSM! Your reply to Javier is right on the mark. I
disagree in a limited way with Interested Conservative. For years
the left has attempted to close off argument and silence those
that disagree with them. Rather than reply with substance they
diminish and demean. The idea is to marginalize our views and
drive us from the square. They try to silence us with the
shrillness of their scream.
I agree with you completely that his opinions or concerns matter
do not to anyone, but, and this is a significant but, the time
has come when we must aggressively respond as RSM has done.
We need to reject out of hand their tactics and argument, if they
wish to engage in a vigorous debate of ideas fine, if they choose
on the other hand to resort to name calling and insult then they
need to be called on it and ignored unless they are in close
physical proximity which opens up a wide variety of response
options.
I refuse to yield the square to the ruffians and the scoundrels

So Javiar has read or heard accounts from friends of a former roommate of Matt Drudge? Wow. Unimpeachable source, there. It doesn't matter one way or another, but maybe Drudge has seen the way conservative's (and those perceived to be conservative) families and friends get destroyed by the media. Perhaps he is protecting those he loves as much as he's protecting himself.
It's possible. Another possibility is that liberals are the least fun people to be around. Their parties suck. I have many liberal friends and I avoid their shindigs like the dentist. I'd much rather stay home than deal with those self-obsessed loons.
Just a some thoughts.

MikeM: Address your, "Live and let live," slogan to fascist liberals such as Javier. To do otherwise is a symptom of unclear thought. They are the ones trying to repress free speech.

Javier is Perez Hilton, by the way.

"Drudge should be outed because he is allied with political and cultural interests that oppress gay people. "
Exactly. Just as I learned in kindergarten: two wrongs make everything alright.
Hurricane| 4.22.09 @ 1:51PM
Javier, I know the uncle of a friend who's cousin's sister's hairdresser's neice told me that Drudge is unquestionably straight. I'll put my source up against yours any day of the week. Well, not "up against" as you would probably get a tingle up your leg over that.

Smitty, I despise those liberal fascists as much as you do. And I highly recommend Jonah Goldberg's book "Liberal Fascism."

Why would anyone care if Matt Drudge was gay anyway?
He can fornicate with midgets and donkeys for all I care, I'm still clicking the Drudge Report ten times a day.
And what's with the "we must punish the impure!" attitude? Some of these gay activists are starting to resemble the KKK.
Xanthippe| 4.22.09 @ 3:54PM
Seems to me that most of the people outing others are found on the left these days. I don't hear about it happening on the right.
But it's the left who are tolerant? Sheeeyah.

I love Drudge and miss his radio show. It's probably a good idea for him to stay in Miami and avoid prying reporters.
OR| 4.22.09 @ 5:47PM
Yeah, but the gay KKK wears pink sheets.

There are reports that Barrack Obama himself was gay/experimented with homosexuality in his teens and twenties. He had several intense male friendships that ended abruptly, leaving the "friend" feeling alone and rejected. Barrack Obama opposes Gay Marriage. Should Barrack be outed because he is allied with political and cultural interests that oppress gay people? I find the accounts of his activities in the gay community to be highly credible since most are from former close friends. As long as Obama aids and abets homophobia, he deserves to be outed as the self-loathing gay man he is.

RSM's claim that Drudge just wants to avoid undue influence from the MSM is just ridiculous on its face. It is so absurd, it's hard to believe even RSM seriously believes it.
So TNR runs a story on maybe Drudge is gay and OMG oh noes. Awful liberal media. Of course if it weren't about *him* that's exactly the sort of story that Drudge himself would likely link to. Certainly what TNR is doing to Drudge is nothing compared to what Drudge did to Sidney Blumenthal.
I like Drudge -- visit it several times a day. But the obsession with his personal life is just his own chickens coming home to roost.
CH| 4.22.09 @ 9:40PM
Sidney Blumenthal is one of the nastiest little politicos on the planet. You'll get no sympathy for that creep here.
Smitty| 4.22.09 @ 9:51PM
Blumenthal works for the Clintons and specializes in the politics of personal destruction. Cry me a river for that evil little b@stard.
McCarroll| 4.22.09 @ 11:00PM
Gays apparently need straight folks to accept their queerness (is that a word?), whether we want to or not. I don't care what they do, but frankly any guy who doesn't like a little po'tang is mentally ill.

"Javier" would fit right in with the perverted thugs described in Genesis 19:4-11, as would the crowds of "gay" vandals disrupting church services and generally behaving like thugs to anyone who supported the CA initiative they opposed. Keep it up, "Javier" and friends, and make the identification stronger in the public mind. Every little inadvertent disclosure of your true spirit will be helpful in exposing its destructive implications.

Matt's too busy triaging the storys the flunkies are creating to bother with mounting a defense to their pathetic smear campaign.

Drudge likes a piece of ass now and then, and so what if it's a mans ass. As long as he keeps writing, who cares if he's a flaming homo? Leave the guy alone.
