Michael Steele's Conservatism

There was a lot of criticism of Michael Steele's conservative credentials during the race for RNC chairman. My own view is that Steele is personally fairly conservative, but has perhaps drunk a bit deeply of the conventional wisdom on how Republicans can appeal to the center (though, let's face it, he is a Republican who has had to try to win in a Northeastern state).

In both his bids for statewide office in Maryland, Steele ran as a strong pro-lifer in a very liberal state. In 2002, Steele had the benefit of a pro-choice candidate above him on the Republican ticket but in 2006 he was out there on his own -- and even held firm on embryonic stem-cell research. With some exceptions, Steele has defended a conservative Republican platform in hostile territory while holding the door open to moderates. Steele's chairmanship is an opportunity to bring together Republicans who want to see the party stick to its conservative principles and those who would rather it move to the center.

Questions remain about Steele's effectiveness as a nuts-and-bolts party builder, but he is an able communicator and amiable television presence. The alternative was a candidate who, whatever may be in his heart, demonstrated a tin ear on racial issues at a time when the party is struggling to show it can be inclusive. Ken Blackwell, whose conservative credentials have been questioned by no one, may have helped Steele turn the corner in this contest, where he'd been typecast as "the moderate."

I like Michael Steele. I hope he doesn't tend toward the left of the party, but he's a good man who can hold his own in a debate. He's very likeable and will be a good face for the Republican Party.

Well put!

I agree. He is an intelligent, articulate person who stands by his convictions (so far) and will excel in this position. I would love to see him leading the country if he succeeds in leading the GOP.

I'v seen him on t.v. before... I think Fox News. He seems like a good person. Best of luck to him and the GOP.

Wishing Mr. Steele the best, but just hope he will push fiscal conservative values and stop the ugliness against gay people, who have all the rights of the Constitution that the rest of us have and that includes the honor of serving in the military as openly as straight people.
I hope he can unite the renegade Republican congressmen.
Republicans must have a clear PR public speaker and Mr. Steele has done that in the past!

In politics contrast is what wins elections. If we Republicans look like Democrats...why vote? We lost this election because our candidate was clueless and in his past, he was almost indistinguishable from the party he ran agianst.

I'm glad Obama has made it acceptable for Republicans to acknowledge African-Americans. Half of their hyphenated label is "American" after all.

P.S. Forget "conservatism," please. It has been, operationally, de facto, Godless and therefore irrelevant. Secular conservatism will not defeat secular liberalism because to God both are two atheistic peas-in-a-pod and thus predestined to failure. As Stonewall Jackson's Chief of Staff R.L. Dabney said of such a humanistic belief more than 100 years ago:

"[Secular conservatism] is a party which never conserves anything. Its history has been that it demurs to each aggression of the progressive party, and aims to save its credit by a respectable amount of growling, but always acquiesces at last in the innovation. What was the resisted novelty of yesterday is today .one of the accepted principles of conservatism; it is now conservative only in affecting to resist the next innovation, which will tomorrow be forced upon its timidity and will be succeeded by some third revolution; to be denounced and then adopted in its turn. American conservatism is merely the shadow that follows Radicalism as it moves forward towards perdition. It remains behind it, but never retards it, and always advances near its leader. This pretended salt bath utterly lost its savor: wherewith shall it be salted? Its impotency is not hard, indeed, to explain. It is worthless because it is the conservatism of expediency only, and not of sturdy principle. It intends to risk nothing serious for the sake of the truth."

Our country is collapsing because we have turned our back on God (Psalm 9:17) and refused to kiss His Son (Psalm 2).

You mention held his ground on Stem Cell research, but did you know he published a research paper on his views detailing one occasion where he compared stem cell research to Nazi concentration camp experiments on Jewish prisoners.

What, now we go and find our own "magic Negro"?

This is a very, very sad day for America. The election of Steele proves that the Republican party will not go in the direction they need to for the sake of our country. They can expect to be in the minority for quite some time to come.

Are you a true conservative or just a kool aid drinker? If you are a true conservative then you would listen to what this other true conservative has to say about him.

He's a RINO. On that we can be clear. This proves that the Republican Party's move to the Left might be a permanent legacy of the Bush years.
