The Spectacle Blog

An Arctic wind sweeps through Washington on the news that Sarah Palin confirmed that she has a dinner date with President Barack Obama in DC this weekend at the Alfalfa Club. Obviously this is terrible news for those who fear her Siren-like influence on men in politics. If you cannot stand even the thought of her (like for instance if you are a New York Times writer) then you have to be uncomfortable the situation.

For someone who obviously wants to run for president in 2012, she did a great job denying it: "No. Not at all. Not at all. No." Methinks the lady doth protest too much.

She also denied a possible book deal, saying that the rumors of an $11 million deal were "out of anybody's realm of possibility of consideration." Once again the reporters misunderstand her: she's not saying that it's out of the realm of possibility that she would be offered a deal of that size. She's saying that it is out of the realm of possibilities that she'd give consideration to a deal that small. The lesson is never to underestimate her ambition.

Palin is running for president, no two ways about it. And she's the most dangerous woman in the world. With her ego and irrational views, she could push the nuclear button and think she was doing God's will by blowing up the world.

I would have thought that she would have seceded from the USA by now with her husband.
Obama of course will see her since she's governor of Alaska. I guess she won't be wearing her naughty monkey shoes to the meeting since somebody on eBay bought them.

"With her ego and irrational views, she could push the nuclear button and think she was doing God's will by blowing up the world."

I hear she's also go rhythm and dances well.
Oops, wrong bigotry meme.

Quin| 1.29.09 @ 1:09PM

It would be prudent to ask her to actually do her job as governor of Alaska first, except that the job of governor of Alaska may be the easiest political office anywhere in the United States. I know some Georgetown seniors who could do the job well in their spare time on top of a full classload.

I love how people like Marilee above are so ready to jump all over Palin for her religion. Well, it seems to me that she hasn't brought her religion into her role in Alaska. She seems to take her role there as being a good administrator. It's all the libs who go nuts because she appears to "really" be a christian - as opposed to previous politicians who've talked it up - be we all knew they weren't serious.

Rick| 1.29.09 @ 2:03PM

Quin - don't know where you get your info from - but it was said during the campaign that Alaska is a "strong governor" state - one where the governor has a lot of responsibilities - took just a few minutes on google to find some info: http://books.google.com/books?id=rdfeB8QLwS4C&pg=PA8&lpg=PA8&dq=weak+governor+strong+governor+alaska&source=bl&ots=xfsRIRsOn7&sig=t6_Hl8ztubpczyY1fyKrlzFqSTw&hl=en&sa=X&oi=book_result&resnum=1&ct=result

Is Quin a troll?

Gentlemen and ladies: Gov. Palin will run (and win) for President in 2012. The only question is how big her victory will be. Moreover, it would appear that she is getting good advice. She is being judicious about her activities outside Alaska, selecting opportunities that maintain if not augment her persona. The none-answer about her pending book deal only makes the publicity about it more pronounced (thereby driving up the price tag for the fortunate book publisher).

>>> If you cannot stand even the thought of her (like for instance if you are a New York Times writer....

Or our dear Bob.

I just can't believe the off-the-wall reactions of the Sarah haters. Really strange stuff.

ruth| 1.29.09 @ 3:31PM

Marilee, take a slow, deep breath and put the Kool- aid down before you open your mouth again. You have a severe case of Palin Derangement Syndrome, (PDS).

Hey Quin, You're theory might be correct. It would be like me hiring 16 year olds with no experience to do your job at burger king.

Kat| 1.29.09 @ 4:47PM

How many elections have you won, Quin?

Basil Plumley| 1.29.09 @ 4:53PM

@Ruth
Leave Marilee alone. She (I think) reminds me of a scene from Planes, Trains, and Automobiles when John Candy/Steve Martin are told they are going the wrong way.
Their response was priceless; "How do they know where we're going?"
If someone wants to be that obtuse, stand out of their way.

Quin| 1.29.09 @ 5:46PM

Kat,
In my earlier life in politics, I had a long history of being parts of winning elections. And in 1988 in an election for alternate delegate to the Republican National Convention, I won -- with more votes than the former governor, the then-current state chairman, the longest-serving GOP Rep in the state Legislature, and two current state legislative candidates. So I do know politics. But that's beside the point: My comment was about the job of BEING governor, not of being ELECTED governor. Here's the deal: The toughest job for any governor is dealing with the budget. But in Alaska, it's easy, because they have so much oil money that they cut a check to every citizen. They NEVER need to worry seriously about a budget deficit. THAT's easy.

PhyCon| 1.29.09 @ 6:14PM

One small quibble with your post, Mr. Lawler. Please get your Hamlet quotes correct. The line is "The lady doth protest too much, methinks."

Otherwise, the PDS on display is fascinating.

Kat| 1.29.09 @ 8:34PM

Well, goody for you, Quin; one time, long ago, you were elected to serve as an 'alternate delegate to the Republican Convention'. How many thousands of state employees did you oversee , or how many state budget millions were you responsible for? Just asking since you think Palin's job is so easy and all. Was your approval rating the highest of all alternate delegates at the Republican National Convention? Your rant against Governor Palin is petty and ridiculous. PDS.

ConservativeWanderer| 1.29.09 @ 10:29PM

Kat, if nothing else, Quin is a great example of how someone with a little knowledge can be dangerous.

Basil Plumley| 1.30.09 @ 12:03AM

@Kat
Having been an 'alternate delegate' myself, I can tell you that one of the main prerequisites of the title is to be breathing. The delegates are usually either the "big boys" or party activists. The key is to bring a lot of friends for the Saturday morning rally.

There are probably more folks voting in Wasilla for Sarah in one precinct than voting that Saturday morning in 1988.

Nice snag, Kat. Like poker, some hands get overplayed.

Californian| 1.30.09 @ 12:29AM

To win a presidential race, a candidate must have either a platform to offer or have Karl Rove behind him/her. Palin won election in Alaska because incumbent was so bad, nobody wanted to vote for him and she looked like a fresh unknown face. Well, she got exposed enough, she is no longer a fresh unknown face and she has very little of her own thoughts to offer the country. Her rating in Alaska is falling fast, faster than price of oil. She has been a laughing stock for the country for 2 months, we will have maybe another year to laugh if enough dummies contribute to her campaign. I doubt she would put a single penny of hers into her campaign - too greedy.

Jim Treacher| 1.30.09 @ 2:21AM

"I just can't believe the off-the-wall reactions of the Sarah haters."

She's the Emmanuel Goldstein of the modern left.

Frosty| 1.30.09 @ 2:21AM

Californian, you make your ridiculous state look even more so. Silence is golden.

ConservativeWanderer| 1.30.09 @ 8:11AM

Californian, you're a perfect example of why your state is so screwed up... and I speak as one born there (but who has had the good sense to move away).

Palin has very little money, politically speaking. Remember the flap when it came out that the RNC had bought her some nice clothes for the campaign trail? Did you know that Todd (Mr. Palin) had to go back to work to help make ends meet with 5 kids?

Did you also know that, in these tough economic times, Sarah has *REFUSED* a raise that the state had authorized?

http://www.adn.com/palin/story/626781.html

In short, you are wrong, wrong, wrongeddy wrong about Palin's finances. Next time spend a few minutes searching the web before pontificating.

Basil Plumley| 1.30.09 @ 11:07AM

@Californian
Please get a new playbook or better talking points. I swear I heard similar things about Reagan 30 years ago.
BTW, would you care to substantiate your claim that her poll numbers have been tanking?
Palin may be a "laughing stock" in your world but in the real world where the rest of us reside, Wall Street should have such credibility.

Well, at least you didn't use "gravitas".
