Mike Huckabee's Heartless, Souless Conservatism

Well look here, Mike Huckabee has a new book coming out, in which he attempts to turn the tables on people like the Club for Growth who dared to argue that Huckabee is not really a conservative:

In a chapter titled "Faux-Cons: Worse than Liberalism," Huckabee identifies what he calls the "real threat" to the Republican Party: "libertarianism masked as conservatism." He is not so much concerned with the libertarian candidate Ron Paul's Republican supporters as he is with a strain of mainstream fiscal-conservative thought that demands ideological purity, seeing any tax increase as apostasy and leaving little room for government-driven solutions to people's problems.

Ahem.

If you analyze it I believe the very heart and soul of conservatism is libertarianism... The basis of conservatism is a desire for less government interference or less centralized authority or more individual freedom and this is a pretty general description also of what libertarianism is.

Now, I can’t say that I will agree with all the things that the present group who call themselves Libertarians in the sense of a party say... But again, I stand on my statement that I think that libertarianism and conservatism are travelling the same path.

Good thing we have real conservatives like Mike Huckabee to defend the GOP from the insideous libertarian influence of "Faux-Cons" like Ronald Reagan.

I guess Fox News turning over its programming to Huckabee was not enough. No, he wanted to make sure he got his licks in on Romney and Fred for the public's viewing pleasure.

Its seems like the media like to pick two lines that are true out of Huck's book about his opponents and people scream bloody murder when 99% of the book is about Huck's supporters and his ideas for the future. Nice goin' so called "journalists". At least we have a new "straight-talker".

Hahaahahah.. and next he's going to tell us Sarah Palin is a real conservative. I can't wait to read his book and see how he justifies the wars in the Middle East. War is God's will? War is good for the economy? They hate us for our "freedoms"? .. The GOP didn't learn in 2006 that people like Huckabee are leading them down a path to defeat. They apparently didn't learn in 2008 either.

I agree with you Mr. Tabin that libertarianism and conservatism are traveling the same path. The only problem is that this is why people like me no longer vote for the GOP, it has become a stale old soulless party. So I guess libertarianism and conservatism can continue travelling down the road together I guess we will just have to see how that work out for party.

The only realistic, meaningful distinction is between Libertarian Party materialists and foundational libertarians. Sorry, I kinda like Huckabee as a "good-ole-boy" gone GOP for basically right-on reasons -- but he really ain't either of those forementioned liberty-minded political animals. Ours is a nation based on the Founders' view of liberty as a gift of God -- for whatever pursuits a free person makes of that freedom -- whether the crude material girl pursuit of money, drugs, sex, and rock 'n' roll ... or preferably of becoming the citizen of virtue the Founders envisioned as being the only reliable custodian of our liberty-based republic.

Huck is FairTax, which makes him conservative. Huck is also dead-on about the party at present. Also, if he's lying about the deeds of anyone or any group, call it out with references. Truth hurts.

I quit listening to the Obama when he said he found obscurities in the teachings of Jesus and I quit listening to Huckleberry when he came out of the gate shouting 'I am the only true conservative because I was a Baptist preacher'. What obscurities? Why did you become a 'was preacher'?

linda| 11.17.08 @ 10:23PM

Huck is a Duck. He flies low and eats slugs.
I am a conservative perched on all 3 stools and this book tells me to boot the ego deluded who thinks he can charm the birds out of the trees.
He's another pastor who thinks that his words are magic.
I'm an Evangelical. Bah!

Bealzabob Martynov| 11.18.08 @ 9:05AM

I, and my reasons may be different than most others, cannot stand that preacher!

Mark| 11.18.08 @ 1:29PM

When you look at the San Francisco value system sweeping through our country, I say thank God for Mike Huckabee who unapologetically defends traditional American values.

Romney and Thompson were wrong to portray Huckabee as a economic liberal and those of you that want to make fun of Huckabee's faith and convictions are equally wrong.

A father of five children came home with a toy, summoned his children and asked which one of them should be given the present,"Who is the most obedient, never talks back to Mother and does everything he or she is told?" he inquired. There was silence, and then a chorus of voices:"You play with it, Daddy!"
