Why does NPR CEO Vivian Schiller need a shill of her own?
Anna Christopher, who is “senior manager of media relations” at National Public Radio, spent yesterday doing some serious explaining. Most of us probably didn’t know that NPR had any managers of media relations, much less a senior one, and certainly didn’t care. NPR is free to waste money any way it chooses, even if some of the money does come from taxpayers.
Anyway, seems Ms. Christopher was called upon to manage the media regarding NPR’s firing of Juan Williams for saying something inconsistent with the company line. The problem was what he said, Ms. Christopher insisted, not where he said it, which was on Fox TV.
What Williams said was that he gets nervous when he is on an airplane and notices some of his fellow passengers in Muslim garb. This, of course, simply will not do.
One wonders how Ms. Christopher and her co-workers at NPR would feel if they saw a couple of sunburned, tobacco chewing old boys in a pickup truck with a rifle racked over the seat coming down the street where they live. Most likely the strangers would not be dangerous; just a couple of bitter clinging deer hunters who got lost. Sort of people you should pity, not fear. But… you never know.
Anyway, Williams was fired and as if that were not punishment enough Vivian Schiller, Ms. Christopher’s boss, the CEO of NPR, said he should have kept his feelings between himself and “his psychiatrist or his publicist.”
Ms. Schiller got this nifty off while speaking to the Atlanta Press Club. One wonders:
(a) How her audience reacted?
(b) Why she felt compelled to send Ms. Christopher out to manage the media again, this time with an apology?
What the senior manager of media relations said was, “Vivian [Schiller] spoke hastily and apologized to Juan and others for her hasty remark.”
Why apologize? After all, Schiller and her outfit had pretty much called Williams a racist already. Why not double down and say he’s nuts, too? One suspects that it is a(nother) NPR taboo to in any way be perceived as making light of people who are mentally ill, emotionally disturbed, or suffering from any malady requiring the services of a psychiatrist. Ms. Schiller probably felt herself on the thinnest of PC ice and looking at a six-month stretch in sensitivity boot camp. So she sent Ms. Christopher out to do some managing of media relations.
You don’t mock the therapeutic culture at NPR where they treat the audience as though it is in need of help and reassurance. How else explain the soft, modulated voices of the on-the-air talent and the implicit message of all those fund-raising campaigns, which comes down to, “We are the voice of sanity in an otherwise disturbed and disturbing world.”
That would be the real world. The one Juan Williams was describing and which National Patronizing Radio elaborately pretends does not exist.

not only is he a nice guy, he is also what an example of what tolerance is SUPPOSED to be. As much as many of us here might disagree with him, at least when you see him debating with Bill O'Reilly, it looks and sounds like civilized discourse. Maybe that's because they both actually believe in respecting other people's points of view.
Let's look on the bright side though: NPR has single handedly managed to make it a thousand times easier for the people to see who really stands for freedom of speech in this country. Is it Tea Partiers, Oath Keepers, 9'12ers, American Spectator, National Review, conservative talk radio and Fox? Or is it NPR and all the rest of the drones out there, who have sold their souls and their last shred of journalistic integrity so that George "spooky dude" Soros will give them their thirty pieces of silver?

Tolerance is not acceptance. Tolerance is "You mind your business and I will mind mine" ... it is shaking hands with the vampire your sister just married, or the teenage boy toy your stepfather's third wife brought to your wedding, and it is singing in an Episcopal church choir where the entire tenor section is gay, and only telling them the joke "Did you hear about the tenor that was so flat that even the other tenors noticed?".
Tolerance means you listen; it does not mean you agree.

I can't comment on Rick Sanchez as I don't know the facts, but to compare Helen Thomas with Juan Williams is fatuous in the extreme. Regardless of what you think of the Israeli/Palestinian problem, Helen Thomas told others what they should do to satisfy herwhile Juan Williams told others what he thought without suggesting that anyone should agree with him.

I get over 65 FM radio stations and over 500 TV channels, and the time for Federal subsidizing of so-called "public radio and TV is long past.

If Juan Williams is a victim of anything, he is a victim of his own choosing, electing to be compensated by the government as a paid government propagandist.
In 1994 serious consideration was given to eliminating public funds for the organizations which purport to be public. They are not public. Even though they receive public financing they are owned by left wing zealots. At the time the 98 million they received was considered chicken feed in the federal budget so they survived. Their budget request for 2014 is 495 million. That's right a half billion while the nation is suffering to support a bunch of overpaid zealots.
Juan Williams is no babe in the woods and knew exactly what he was doing. Ironically, he was the only black journalist at NPR. Like most leftist organizations full of the liberal elite they preach leftist elitism, only to ignore their own sermons when it comes to race. Like most collectivists, they practice racism in their own lives while preaching the sins of racism to others.

I'm a member of two different Tea Parties here in Texas and this is already an issue. Yesterday Fox News reported that NPR receives almost a half billion dollars of taxpayer money. Remember when the Left turned on Williams during the 2008 election? Said he wasn't "really" black and wasn't even born in this country (Panama Canal Zone-like McCain). For some reason he has been in their crosshairs for some time. Maybe he was just to honest for them even when he followed the party line.
There seems to be some orders recently about not saying "Moslem" in any context. That explains The View events as well. Apparently The Leaders have spoken and the plebs must obey. Wonder who gives the orders?

Psychiatric evaluation has become a major Thought Police weapon within the U.S. government, especially the military. Say something "wrong," and get leaned on, HARD, to "volunteer" for psychiatric evaluation. Once accused, your career is usually destroyed. It's done behind the "government wall," so most people don't know about this odious practice.
Civil service/military officials can destroy people's lives this way with impunity because the laws protect them. This is the clearest indication yet that NPR is a government entity.

I used to listen to NPR, back in the early 90's early Saturday Mornings, cause there wasn't any conservative talk radio back then on Saturday Mornings until......
1: Heard an NPR reporter react in dis belief to the declassified KGB files that confirmed that the Commies shot down KAL 007, a civillian 747, in cold blood, which President Reagan had announced publicly the day after it happened in 1983.
2: Puff Piece on how great it was in Cuba since the Commies stopped giving them fertilizer/gasoline and everyone had to revert to 18th century farming ...
3: "Car Talk" program where the Hosts, 2 Mechanics from Cambridge Massachussets take calls from Volvo/Saab/Fiat/Renault owners, and instead of solving the caller's car problem, castigated her for not knowing that Oliver North was running for Senate from her state...

Vivian Schiller thinks Juan Williams needs a shrink because he (A) is honest about what he thinks and believes, and (B) is respectful of those who disagree with him. In other words, he has Integrity and Character.
People like Vivian Schiller view Integrity and Character as evidence of mental instability because the foundation of such traits is a well developed sense of Right and Wrong, and they believe that any "educated" person who adheres to such archaic notions in the "modern" (progressive) world must be either emotionally disturbed or mentally unbalanced.

What can you say about the drones who work at NPR that hasn't been said over and over down through the years. From top to bottom an insular, inbreed group with little or no connection to the real world. -First of all NPR is a reliable liberal mouthpiece. It should receive no federal funds but the Republicans have had many chance to do this but have never really tried.
-Juan Williams is a still a liberal with many bad ideas. His dislike for flying with Muslims does not make up for many of the offensively stupid positions. Reminds of conservative love for the vile and hopefully soon to be gone, Christopher Hitchens.
-On the eve of historic elections this story means next to nothing.
-I didn't notice anyone defending Sanchez for speaking what was essentially the truth several weeks ago.
Having said all that, if the furor cause NPR to be de-funded then it is a good thing.

If I recall, that ludicrous $700,000 anti-pornography "study" led by Judith Reisman in the mid 1980s came from a Justice Department grant. As a libertarian, I am against public funding of all partisan politics. That includes conservative politics. Read Thomas DiLorenzo and James Bennett's 1985 book for the Cato Institute as to why consistency is a good idea.

In fairness, I don't think Ms. Schiller was suggesting that Williams is crazy. I think she was suggesting that Juan should talk about his feelings with a psychiatrist instead of with O'Reilly and his audience. In the elitist world that Schiller likely inhabits, I suspect having a psychiatrist is more of a status symbol than a sign of mental illness.
