Who Is DeMaurice Smith?

Conservative radio talk show host Rush Limbaugh was dropped from a group bidding to buy the St. Louis Rams.
-- ESPN's Adam Schefter on Wednesday.

It is, of course, another example of the game within the game.

On the surface, the National Football League is just about football. You know, big guys knocking each other around in a stadium filled with tens of thousands in front of television cameras showcasing the game for tens of millions. All under the benign gaze of American rich guys and girls, the proud team owners, who have bought or purchased their way into ownership of an NFL team after a lifetime of hard work or Daddy's hard work.

So far, so good.

The problem? This is, politely put, an untruth. And, in recent days, a startlingly revealed untruth. An untruth that casts the NFL in a highly unpleasant light.

Yet the dirty little secret of the NFL seems to be that it is in the charge of people caring less about football than left-wing politics and all the implicitly racial and intolerant ideas that have been the vivid hallmark of the progressive movement and the Democratic Party from its inception in slavery days. Right down to the notion of which blacks will remain on the intellectual plantation in return for a PR pat on the head.

All done while putting on a public face of sweet, non-biased reasonableness concerned only for the great American game of football.

Don't believe a word of it.

Case in point of the latter is one DeMaurice Smith.

Who is DeMaurice Smith?

On the surface, in his role as Executive Director of the NFL Players Union he's a Defender of the Game. Unity. Apple Pie. Motherhood. He is out there with a Deeply Serious, Fair-Minded Defense of The Players. This is what Smith said in a now much publicized e-mail to the Player's Union executive committee.

I've spoken to the Commissioner [Roger Goodell] and I understand that this ownership consideration is in the early stages. But sport in America is at its best when it unifies, gives all of us reason to cheer, and when it transcends. Our sport does exactly that when it overcomes division and rejects discrimination and hatred.

Gosh.

How wonderful.

"America at its best." "Unifies." "Reason to cheer." "Transcends." "Overcomes division and rejects discrimination and hatred."

Robbins Mitchell| 10.15.09 @ 6:26AM

Well,I will guran-damn-tee you one thing....after watching this sordid episode unfold over the last few days,I will never again attend and NFL game or patronize ANY company that advertises on televised NFL games...I grew up loving Bart Starr and Paul Hornung and the Packers....but nowadays there simply aren't any NFL teams that sparkle like that enough for me to want to root for them...so come Sunday,I will find something else to do with my increasingly scarce TV time...let the thugs fight over what's left...I've had my fill of them

Vietnam Vet in Communist MA| 10.15.09 @ 2:45PM

I stopped watching the National Felons League years ago.

Pecos Pete| 10.15.09 @ 6:59AM

Ahhhh, will diversity radio programming be in our near future?

melvin| 10.15.09 @ 7:06AM

As has Robbins Mitchell, I to wash my hands of the NFL. I will never again observe another game, purchase any NFL paraphernalia of my favorite team.
No greater message can be sent to the NFL than to loose millions of dollars of former fans who have grown disgusted with the thug league. Let the two race baiting, womanizing, bottom feeding, scum sucking race baiting pigs of Sharpton and Jackson pick up the shortfall.

Galen| 10.15.09 @ 7:45AM

I, for one, am relieved. I love Rush's football comentary and would hate to lose his objectivity by dint of team ownership.

JBobs| 10.15.09 @ 2:01PM

Galen, I'm not relieved by this event... instead I'm just not surprised. Rush's ban from the NFL is just more evidence of the liberal political correctness that rules our government and institutions. The plight of Michael Savage (banned from Great Britain) has been largely ignored by conservative commentators like Rush... which maybe now will change since someone more mainstream has been blacklisted by the PC crowd.

alyeska| 10.15.09 @ 2:53PM

great britain is a civilized country. you could learn from them :)

RM| 10.15.09 @ 5:35PM

"The plight of Michael Savage (banned from Great Britain) has been largely ignored by conservative commentators like Rush... "

That's because Savage has an obvious personality issue. Nobody likes an a**hole like Savage expect for the maschostic callers on his show.

That being said, Savage should not have been banned from Britain.

Big J| 10.15.09 @ 7:48AM

None of this surprises me one bit. The left has discovered a pet project in destroying conservatives. Rush has been fighting this for years.

Stay tuned. We have seen this show before, as has Rush. Look for him to devise a brilliant plan of attack, and come out smelling like a rose.

Remember the Harry Reid smear letter? He raised over $12 million for the college funds of fallen marines (including a $6 million match with his own funds), and pretty much made a mockery of the most powerful man in the U.S. Senate.

I've got a feeling that he's going to come out on the other side of this just fine.

alyeska| 10.15.09 @ 2:55PM

or he'll just have to suck it up as he does every time he's rejected by decent people!

Margie| 10.15.09 @ 6:50PM

Decent people? That's what you call racists? Takes one to know one, eh, Liberal Reader?

Timothy L. Pennell| 10.15.09 @ 8:23AM

What I love about this story, is that Al - KILL THE JEW - Sharpton, and his buddy; Jesse - HYMIE TOWN - Jackson can have so much 'pull' in a League that prides itself on being diverse, and so above it all. I like the fact that Ray Lewis gets to play. How many people did he SHOOT and KILL? Or that DOG BOY Michael Vick gets to play. And Pac Man Jones, and all the other HIP HOP NEGROES with their RAP SHEETS, as long as your arm. I am sick of the double standards. Al Sharpton? Jesse Jackson? What's the matter? Was Louis Farakhan too busy? I am one WHITE GUY - That's right, WHITE GUY - that's had ENOUGH. If a WHITE DOES IT, it's a HATE CRIME. If a BLACK DOES IT, it's NO BIG DEAL. As of Today, I cut ties with everything BLACK. And the rest of ya better WAKE UP too.
"They came for Limbaugh and I did nothing." Well, I'm doing something. I proudly proclaim, this day, that I am a RACIST. Just like that FAT PIG - SHARPTON, and just like that piece of FILTH - JACKSON. And just like every one of those BLACK RACIST SCUM, in the Congressional BLACK Caucus. And the BLACK Entertainment Network. And the Organization of BLACK Journalists. And the BLACK Miss America.
Try replacing 'BLACK', with 'WHITE' and see how far you get. WAKE UP you stupid WHITE PEOPLE. Stand up for yourselves. While you still can.

Big J| 10.15.09 @ 9:21AM

My name is Big J, and I am a RAAAAAAACIST!

It has been 39 years since I last uttered a racial slur, looked down on or judged another by the color of his or her skin, or sanitized myself after shaking hands with a - *gasp!* - BLACK PERSON!

Don't worry, Timothy, there is a 12-step program for folks like us. The first step is to admit you have a problem.

I KNOW I do, for I have been told by the likes of Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton, Eric Holder and the Grand Pu bah himself, Barack Hussein Obama (Mmm, Mmm, Mmm!).

An imperative part of our recovery is to admit that there is a power greater than ourselves, like the NAACP, Rainbow Push Coalition, LULAC, CAIR, or some other such organization.

Meetings are on Sunday, directly after a strong "sermon" given by Jeremiah Wright.

See you there.

Lewis| 10.16.09 @ 12:09AM

I feel Timothy's pain and anger. As a jew I'm sick of these leftist racists and antisemites from Hussain Obama to Sharpton . This prick of a president and his cohorts are fanning the flames of racism incessantly by bashing whites and jews like me CONSERVATIVE - NOT liberal low life jews like Rahm Emmanuel and his nazi brother. They deserve what's coming to them!!!!

Big Mac| 10.17.09 @ 2:09AM

Then don't stand to close to Al Sharpton then, it's time for his 3:00 feeding.

roadmaster| 10.15.09 @ 8:26AM

The NFL doesn't know it yet, but they just dumped all over their BIGGEST fan, Rush Limbaugh. What does that say to all you little fans? Sit down, shut up, and fork over your money, dumbass!

alyeska| 10.15.09 @ 10:29PM

the whole world knows that rush is a huge sports fan. the sports world just doesn't recipricate.

R Martin| 10.15.09 @ 8:34AM

The hypocracy of the left is staggering, particularly on matters of race. Al Sharpton is, of course, the low fruit example, but look higher in the tree and you'll find our president...and his wife. No one could sit in Rev. Wright's church for twenty years listening to racist drivel and not be sympathetically inclined. That inclination was clearly revealed in Mr. Obama's comment about his grandmother being a "typical white person". What an appalling statement. Why was he never called on to explain just what, exactly, is a typical white person? Mrs. Obama's comment about not being proud of her country before her husband's candidacy is equally revealing. Could his race have anything to do with her pride?

That racial agnst has been loosed on Limbaugh, particularly over false allegations (who did the Wikipedia entries, Mary Mapes?), while the Obamas get a pass is shocking, and discouraging. There is a lot of racial stirring going on out there and it's mostly on one side.

toad| 10.15.09 @ 8:56AM

Well if there is not enough money now to keep the Rams in St. Louis I wonder how happy St Louis would be it the team leaves town? Or just perhaps folds and goes under?

Curly Smith| 10.15.09 @ 9:09AM

The NFL adopted the "Rooney Rule" in 2002 requiring teams to interview minority candidates for head coaching jobs, and it is apparently considering expanding the "Rule" to front office hires.

Now the NFL has the "Limbaugh Rule" which disqualifies anyone who believes that merit, rather than skin color, should determine who gets to participate.

cuban pete| 10.15.09 @ 11:31AM

Very well put.
Thank You

TennesseeVolunteer| 10.15.09 @ 9:16AM

The NCAA is even worse. I was an athletic director in a Div. II NCAA institution and I was shocked at the takeover of the NCAA by gender equity/lesbian rights movement. It wasn't the idea that there should not have been fairness to both genders but the under the table takeover of committees and representatives to push the lesbian agenda. At my first convention, I went early to better educate myself about the NCAA since I was a businessman, not a coach. Almost 2/3rds of the sessions were dedicated to lesbian/gay agenda items. Their agenda was being pushed just like the left is pushing the far left agenda through the Democratic party.

Anthony| 10.15.09 @ 9:22AM

The Left has been engaged in an all out assault on conservatives, more so, since Obama's election. Limbaugh is correct; this sordid little episode involving the NFL is representative of a larger and more sinister pathology in which the Left is willing to engage in a scorched earth war to eliminate us from participation in our own society.
Conservatives being marginalized is no longer enough for the Stalinist Left, they want us gone. This portends of even more bad things to come. America is in deep, deep trouble.

Lewis| 10.16.09 @ 12:30AM

Amen to Anthony. 2010 and 2012 can't come soon enough. Goodbye to NFL support from me. I will watch SEC football on saturdays and by the way Charles Barkley is one of the biggest racists going so bye- bye to the NBA and their leftists too. This scorched earth policy of Obama and the left against conservatives and CAUCASIONS begs the question. Is this TREASON. If not it's awfully close.G-D help and protect us!!

carolb| 10.17.09 @ 1:20PM

My God how quickly the Right has turned this episode into a Left attack on conservatives. Here all along ever since Obama was elected and there have been daily malicious attacks against HIM including people showing up at townhall meetings with AK-47's on their shoulders, I have been thinking it was the other way around. I guess with all of the outrage being expressed by Rush "dittoheads" it is not Obama but Rush who is really "the One" and "the Messiah!"

tjsker| 10.15.09 @ 9:46AM

The NFL and the Commissioner have just backed themselves into a corner. The next time a player, or anyone associated with the NFL, says something racist they must be immediately banned from the NFL. No questions asked. What's good for the goose is good for the gander.

Red Grange| 10.15.09 @ 9:58AM

It is time to launch a boycott against Dave Checketts and SCP Worldwide. The enabler of Sharpton et. al. must pay.

Here is what they do:

" SCP Worldwide owns a diverse array of properties that include the National Hockey League’s St. Louis Blues, Scottrade Center, famed Kiel Opera House in St. Louis as well as the Blues' AHL affiliate Peoria Rivermen. The company also owns and operates Major League Soccer’s Real Salt Lake and its home - Rio Tinto Stadium - a soccer-specific facility with related entertainment elements in Sandy, Utah as well as KALL700 Sports Radio in Salt Lake City."

Dave Checketts has allowed the Sharptons of the world to throw US in the grease. Checketts has empowered every kook out there to now smear Limbaugh's entire audience, and that is EXACTLY what Soros and Emanuel will do.

Dave Checketts must pay for this. This is horrible, an incredible blow to free speach. He must pay. I know we usually are against boycotts, but Checketts alowed himself to be intimidated by Al Sharpton, and he has now made it possible for the Left to brutalize Limbaugh's listeners and supporters. Just watch. They will now smear us all.

The thing to do is to make the cowards pay-Dave Checketts.

While critical of Rush's part in the conservative crack up of 2005, that handed Congress and the Presidency to Democrats, all I can say is "sue Rush sue!!"

As for slavery I'm afraid Rush's detractors have confused him with 1993 Nobel prize winner for economics Professor Robert Fogel. Fogel in his insightful book Time On the Cross argued American slavery while profitable (i.e., built the South), but was morally indefensible. Whether one likes or dislikes Fogel's thesis it is probably accurate and explains why slavery persisted so long in the most politically enlightened nation in the world.

Maybe the left would be better served to be disgusted in Obama's craven behavior regarding human rights in Iran, Venezuela, Cuba, Vietnam, North Korea and China.

Pete| 10.15.09 @ 11:35AM

I thought "diversity" was the greatest good in the universe. Without ownership with "diverse" viewpoints, how can the NFL thrive?

I wonder what percentage of NFL owners are black - anyone know that offhand? My guess is in the 0-10% range. How about we choose a few white owners and forcibly replace them with some black owners (the government is well versed at basesless takeovers these days)? After all, the majority of white owners must have gotten to where they are on the backs of black players or as random beneficiaries of our (formerly) evil capitalist system. Float that proposal out there and watch them zip their mouths up tight.

We are finished with National Football for Liberals. Goddell, et al, you can have your half hour Cyalis ads, pink breast jerseys and brown-outs on Sunday Night Football in honor of Global Warming, and all the wimpboy (it's too scary to live in a world with people who disagree with me) sports commentators who, apparently, need the Cyalis.

Paddy O'Furniture| 10.15.09 @ 12:07PM

I always took Mr. Limbaugh's comments about Donovan McNabb to be more of an indictment of the press than a racial slur against a good, but not a exceptional, talent.
Public brands, be it soap, soft drinks,Disney or Football, have a vested interest in insulating themselves from divisive personalities to maximize returns.
My question for Commissioner Geddell, is why they approve of Keith Olbermann to represent their product while spurning Rush?

alyeska| 10.15.09 @ 3:06PM

excellent question, paddy. why don't you and your ilk ponder on that for a while?

Margie| 10.15.09 @ 6:57PM

Why should we pay extortionate ticket prices and NFL gear, when we can watch the mass street beatings in Chicago for free on National News.

juandomino| 10.15.09 @ 1:00PM

I'm not giving up my Steelers, Rush's favorite team as well if I am not mistaken. And I'm not going to boycott sponsors of the NFL. Frankly, if I was to boycott every offensive merchant I would probably be living on Little Debbie's and rain water. Honestly, I don't know what if anything I will do about this latest left-wing assault on liberty. I will however continue to build my log home in the woods, complete with an in-house well and under ground organic grow rooms. I will continue to find more creative ways to generate my own electricity. I will continue to educate my children on what a great nation we once were and what a wonderful God it was who brought us to this place we call America. I will also continue to strengthen my body and my mind. I will become a better marksman, bowman, hunter, trapper, and scout. I will continue to buy ammo in such quantities so as not to draw attention to myself. And when all hell breaks loose, as it surely will, you will not find me on the streets with the hordes of mindless soulless barbarians scavenging and stealing, raping and killing. I will be sitting comfortably on the front porch of my Rocky Mountain home, perhaps reading the Good Book, perhaps enjoying a fine cigar and a home brew. I will be watching, waiting, and praying, never too far from my God, my senses or my gun. Wake up brothers. and sisters. This is not a drill!!

If you disagree with those you named fine. But argue the case . In my oppinion the real scare mongers are your folks who for example refuse to allow legislation say about about health care to be read and digested by those who will be affected. Instead they sneakily and behind close doors create "legislation" not even read by congress. Then when conservatives get wind of what is actually written in say HR 3200 and spread the news of those elements that voters should be afraid of --that is scare mongering. Good morning all, Just a thought to ponder. Since the NFL has determined that Rush Limbaugh should not be allowed to own an NFL team based, in part, because 75% to 80% of the NFL is black, and so this has once again been moved into a racist argument by the “Chip on our Shoulders” racist’s. I have decided that my cafe's, because 95% of our clientele are heterosexual white Christian American people who speak English, will not hire blacks, gay’s, muslims or any hyphenated-americans! I feel this decision is sound, because after all, the decisions made by a white heterosexual Christian male American MUST be better than that of any other group of people who reside here in America but don’t want to be called American’s. Instead they want to fundamentally change America. What’s good for the goose is good for the gander, Right?

conservativeblkwoman| 10.15.09 @ 3:09PM

Roger~That's an entirely reasonable reaction. Responding to a commenter on my blog this afternoon I wrote the following:
"I am troubled however that the double standards which black folks have come to expect in point of fact feel entitled to is going a long way towards damaging race relations.

The attempt to superimpose a "gag" order on White America and demanding that they ignore any social pathology if black folks are involved is bound to have seriously negative repercussions.

Black folks need to start thinking critically about the capitalist they are seeking to tear down. Unless all of Black America intends to be self-employed who do they believe will be hit the hardest if Capitalism fails?

Your comments lead me to believe I pretty much hit the nail on the head.

Big J| 10.15.09 @ 3:31PM

TURK| 10.15.09 @ 1:14PM

I woke up this A.M. to be surprised that the NFL and the scum at all levels in this matter had done what they had.

I am a football fan. Having lived in Denver from '88 til 2000 the Broncos( Elway;Sharpe et al) helped me navigate a hard time battling cancer and its effects with my wife-it eventually claiming her life. Bronco football helped me thru. I had balls and other memorabilia from their 2 super bowls. Today I ridded myself of all such. I will NOT allow the nfl on my tv. My Bengal rooting sons can remain at home when on some days we might have watched together. There are plenty of things I can do with my Sundays and Mondays. It gives me a warm feeling to know that not a dime shall flow from me to the collection of wealthy scummy businessmen, players and miscellaneous hangers on that contaminate the game Paul Brown once stood astride.

Honor| 10.15.09 @ 2:38PM

Love ya, guy.

Norman Conquest| 10.15.09 @ 1:17PM

Pro football is little more than modern bread and circuses. The population, in order to take its collective mind off of the rapidly unraveling country, is encouraged to watch these steroid-enhanced barbarians and their pointless and artless excuse for a game. If the hideous Michael Vick case wasn't enough for the few sane people left in this insane asylum of a country to boycott the NFL this surely the revolting treatment of Rush Limbaugh will. But then, this being the USA in 2009, perhaps I should have used "hopefully" rather than "surely". There is little to be hopeful about in the US anymore.

Big J| 10.15.09 @ 2:07PM

"There is little to be hopeful about in the US anymore. "

A comment like that breaks my heart, Norman. There is much to be hopeful for in this great nation of ours. Sometimes (much like self employment), it's just hard to see. I wish I had a dollar for every time I wanted to just give up and go back to work for someone else in the last seven years - I would be well on the way to retirement.

You need look no further than the very pages you are reading.

The all out assault on conservatism and the lengths the left has been willing to go to in order to destroy it are very telling - we are scaring the h*ll out of them!

John Q Public is becoming educated on issues that had never concerned him before, and he is getting vocal about it.

There are also some very conservative leaders rising, and I am hopeful that November of 2010 will begin a new era greatness, maybe even better than the Reagan years.

We shall see. Til then, don't lose hope. Also, do yourself a favor, and follow the advice given by Texican and juandomino. If the worm doesn't turn by next election, I fear ammo is going to be the most precious commodity one can possess.

John Q Public| 10.15.09 @ 2:46PM

Thanks Big J. Let's hope you're right. We're waking up in droves, we're mad as Hell, and we aren't gonna take it any more!

Limbaugh said that the [sports] MSM put McNabb upon a pedestal due to political correctness; and his statement was entirely accurate. Compare the football success [of leading their respective teams to the Super Bowl] of McNabb, Russell, Peyton & Eli Manning, and Troy Aikman [all first round draft choices]. The first two have unsuccessfully failed in that regard, yet both have been excessively praised by the sports MSM---------WHY????????

Tim| 10.15.09 @ 2:27PM

Joey| 10.15.09 @ 3:08PM

Dick Durbin and company say that orthodox Catholics and Evangelicals need not apply for federal judgeships. Now the NFL says Rush Limbaugh need not apply to be an owner.

I help care for my two bi-racial grandchildren. But I'm a conservative so I must be a racist, eh?

It is not enough for the libs to attack us politically, now. They are doing everything they can to keep us from being able to buy or sell. Perhaps the govt. could issue some sort of identification, say a mark in the forehead or the palm, to make it easier for people to know who is alloed to buy or sell.

conservativeblkwoman, You must understand that I do not have one ounce of racism in me, BUT, you are very observant to the fact that I, and people like me have had it with the continued barrage of hypocritical "Chip on my Shoulder" racisim in this country which has only increased since the current administration. Not only black & white either! This country is being torn apart from the inside out. This administration continually touted that they were going to Unite us, but indeed, has done more to divide us. (Divide and Conquer)"not without a fight." This country has not been this heated & divided in a long time. A sad state of affairs for Dr. Martin Luther King. This Country will never be forced, regulated or otherwise coerced into peaceful race relations. I will freely admit to you that yes there are whites who are not yet there if you will also admit that there is also a "chip on our shoulder" mentality that doesn't what equality but wants to get even. Racial tensions will only be overcome when people FREELY lay down there bigotry and begin to talk one on one. Government is only exacerbating the problem. Thank you for your compassion!

Limbaugh the Sequel: Is it Possible to Embarrass the NFL? « Beagle Scout links to this page. Here’s an excerpt:

…by beaglescout under Activism, Libel, Racism, Rush Limbaugh, Slander Leave a Comment   After the NFL has made a mockery of itself by obsequiously smacking its forehead against the ground on which DeMaurice Smith, Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton walk, it is up to NFL fans to find out if it is possible for the NFL to be embarrassed any more. Remember, this is the league that welcomes people convicted of homicide,…

macdaddy| 10.15.09 @ 5:16PM

I'm not going to watch the NFL anymore. To be honest, though, it has really devolved into a bunch of players going through the motions and bound by a bunch of crappy rules like reviewing calls that have just sucked the life out the game. Actually, Rush should thank Checkett for saving him a whole lot of money. The guy has acted like he's a weasel and you certainly wouldn't want to invest money with someone like that.

Michelle| 10.15.09 @ 5:18PM

Well, the NFL I hope has hung themselves-by letting down their conservative audience. I hope they go bankrupt.

Michelle| 10.15.09 @ 5:21PM

Tim-

As soon as this happens-conservatives being denied jobs there will be a revolution no doubt!!

Tis interesting reading... what about oldbermouth with his ranting and raveing, slandering poeple while still with the NFL? How about all those who have played or used drugs? J.T. of the Giants fame (?) and all those to the current date. What about owners who have screwed the fans of pro-football - like Baltimore moving without notice to anyone in the league to Indy, the Browns moving to Baltimore, how about an owner of the Bills... illegal by NFL rules has participated in horse racing all the years he has owned Buffalo... now in the Hall of Fame.

Prediction... watch the Rams move back to L.A. because a deal has been made by that city with the NFL on a stadium. For some reason, the NFL doesn't want L.A. out of the fold... the city benefits by being able to watch all the games because of 'no black out' or in the north its called a 'white out' as in snowed!

How could N.Y. get so much for a new stadium for the G's and the J's while towns needing help from the NFL were declined.

Where was the NFl when the big D investing that big blob of a building with their score board before the seasons starts - next year they say... pretty slow compared to the rush against Rush.

The NFL couldn't be bothered by a colored liberal sports comentator who supported Rush.

The NFL certainly lives up to its name - No Fun League.

I'm for smaller salaries for the players... but Rush is in favour of they big pay-days.... maybe I have a change of getting into the administration of that league of no fun.

thitvav| 10.15.09 @ 7:18PM

Al & Jesse have not been for the black, but always ready to show off to get attention.

Duke U. lacrosse team was slander by both big mouths... spread lies and created fear - but when "nothing but the facts" finally provided the truth and nothing but the truth - neither of these unwanted black supporters = Al & Jesse never apolozised to Duke and especially the innocent players. And the NFL would listen to these racially deatbeat liers?

Go figure.

cindy, CA| 10.15.09 @ 7:47PM

Coming from a person who never really enjoyed football this probably naive, can't we boycott them for a season? We should all be focusing on politics anyway. While we are at it let's boycott outspoken liberal entertainers.. The way I see it is the libs have the wealthy elite and the indigents. We have the rest who pay for everything we do several times over.

Bob Smithe| 10.15.09 @ 8:37PM

Demaurice Smith doesn't want Rush Limbaugh living in his neighborhood. Sounds like racism to me. Can Mr Smith explain why the NFL which is 70% black players has only 6 black quarterbacks out of 28? Maybe Mr. Smith should concentrate on his job instead of policing who wants to insvest in the NFL.

PS: If you think the NFL cares about the Fans why doesn't Los Angeles have an NFL team? Too many Blacks in LA?

Rush Limbaugh is up to his old tricks. He has a history of throwing bombs at other people and then crying "victim" when they are thrown at him. Fox News continues to spew the lie that Rush is the "victim" of a "left-wing witch hunt". Rush was denied access to buy a stake in the St. Louis Rams by other NFL owners, a group of people who are disproportionately white, male and conservative. Rush was denied access to a PRIVATE club by a PRIVATE entity, the NFL. Private entities are allowed to do this. Rush and other right-wing crybabies need to get over this.

i almost feel sorry for rush. i think he really means half the stuff he says, but it's earned him a lot of money and he's sort of riding the tiger.

then, whenever he reaches out to more mainstream organizations he's shot down (eg ESPN). he may have a mild case of asbergers. he's always on the outside looking in.

do you really think he socializes with the type of people who listen to his show?

martin j smith| 10.18.09 @ 8:12AM

This issue isabout politics and not about football. If you want to believe what you say...go right ahead. Most see this situation for what it is. And there is somethinggood that comes out of it too. First: Rush get a biiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiggggggggggg b0000000000000st
from his supporters and i'll bet he gets higher listenership because of this HA HA !!
Second: It is another teachable moment for those who are teachable. About the media and the race baiting politicians. You clearly have your own axe to grind that's fine. Thirdly, I hope those folks who spend any kind of money on NFL stuff including cable tv subscriptions etc etc consider
a temporary or partial boycott to give the the NFL a message. By the way, you left out certain influential characters in the drama including Players, a guy named deMaurice Smith and some others Sharpton and Jackson. You can fool some of the people some of the time but not all of the people all of the time.

Margie| 10.15.09 @ 9:50PM

Then when are blacks going to "get over" slavery and stop using it on whites for every idiotic thing under the Sun? Slavery hasn't been around for how long now? Seems quite hypocritical for blacks to demand reparations from people who didn't even do anything. I think you all should "get over that, too."

Haunyocker| 10.15.09 @ 9:51PM

Who Is DeMaurice Smith? Seems rather obvious doesn't it...A black who is racist against whites!

Jeffrey Lord| 10.15.09 @ 11:17PM

Tom Hooker...

People with long histories as the most vicious of anti-Semites (that would be Al Sharpton etc), who perpetually judge others by color - which is racist - did their thing here. The NFL, which by numerous accounts is extremely politically correct and passive about racial antics, reacted. Why? the folks in control are sympathetic to left-wing politics (follow their campaign contributions.) The Democratic Party, and the progressive movement in general, has a long and very sordid history of racism, playing the race card etc. Rush or no Rush, that's the deal. The notion that the NFL approved of Rush joining the club - which is quite specifically what happened, they asked him, not the other way around - and then did this? Sorry, unacceptable. Would you invite a guest to your home for a party - and when he walked in the door tell him to leave? This was bad in any number of ways, but certainly letting people who have problems with racial issues and a pretty bad history on the subject determine the rules is a definite no-no.

Cris Worth| 10.16.09 @ 10:09AM

From a previous article I told you so. Rush had no intention to buy an NFL team in the first place. Rush knew he would draw verbal artillery barrages and welcomed it. Whatever his motives, ratings, notoriety, a platform to attack his critics especially black ones his plan worked. Liberals have a knee jerk reaction to Rush controversy, Rush knows this and will continue teasing them with further tomfoolery.

ned terry| 10.16.09 @ 11:13AM

Good riddance to all of you "former" NFL fans. The preponderance of first class a-holes at sporting and concert events has kept me away from many a game/show. Maybe tickets will be easier to come by and I won't have to sit beside some drunken frat boy next time. Thanks, Rush !

slapshot| 10.30.09 @ 12:33AM

Those driven away will not be the a-holes you refer to. They will still be there. You think drunken frat boys care about this subject?

Mark Cross| 10.16.09 @ 8:47PM

I've known DeMaurice for 35 years. We went to school together at Riverdale Baptist. He is one of the most decent, caring and certainly non racist people I have ever met. So he opposes Rush Limbaugh and made a donation to Barack Obama and you guys are going to paint him as a racist, left wing communist? You should be ashamed of yourselves. What has happened to our country that would cause people to spew such hatred toward those that don't agree with them on every issue? Wait a minute I can answer that one, radio talk show hosts like Rush Limbaugh.

victor| 10.17.09 @ 1:01AM

So you believe that Rush is a racist? Based on what? Fabricated "quotes" by those who truly loathe Rush and what he stands for?
Free enterprise and Capitalism?
And the fact that Patton Boggs Blow is a democrat
lobbyist's dream?
Left wing Communist is redundant as Left wing will suffice to describe DeMaurice.
The whole rush thing was a distraction. This is meant to solidify the Union's position against the owners.
Rush did not lose anything, but a headache.
The NFL is going to lose a lot of revenue when people stop going to games.
Something will have to be cut and it won't be the beer and brats.
That will leave the payroll to be trimmed.
Be careful what you wish for. You may not like it.
He that lives by the sword, will die by the sword.
Rush will survive, can't say the same for the NFL.
He will track down those responsible and ruin them; financially and politically.

Roger| 10.17.09 @ 12:12PM

Mark, nice try but, as usual with left wingers, your info is askew. It was your buddy DeMaurice, Sharpton, Jackson and a few others who pulled the race card yet again!!!!! DeMaurice an his jack booted thugs are the ones that said because Limbaugh was soooooo controversial he would be bad for the league, What a joke! How bout when the thug NFL players are caught, like the fact that Ray Lewis gets to PLAY. How many people did he SHOOT and KILL? Or that DOG BOY Michael Vick gets to PLAY. And Pac Man Jones, and all the others with their RAP SHEETS, this make you and your school buddy hypocrites! Talk about spewing hatred because someone doesn't agree with you! YOU have got to be kidding me! Not even you believe that one. Your president him self is trying to shut down talk radio (OOPS OPPOSING VIEW), stop insurance companies from writing opposing letters regarding health care to THEIR own clients (OOPS OPPOSING VIEW), putting tax payer dollars into going after individuals like Beck (OOPS OPPOSING VIEW), trying to collect e-mails of citizens who oppose his ideas (OOPS OPPOSING VIEW), Saying to the people of this country who oppose his left wing marxist ideas if you punch once we will punch back twice as hard. Your buddy DeMaurice is in obama's camp up to his neck (wanted to say head up his butt, but figured I'd keep it civil) and because Limbaugh is the opposing view DeMaurice and his "Chip on their Shoulder" racist buddies are the ones that are spewing the hatred. If they look like left wing communist, walk like left wing communist and smell like left wing communist, they ARE left wing communist. We have been subject to this reverse racist bull long enough. SO, if your president thinks he is going to punch back twice as hard? GET READY my friend. We are not buying your twisted trash any longer!!!!

slapshot| 10.30.09 @ 12:38AM

So the fact that he used to work for Eric Holder, attorney general and Obama cabinet member has nothing to do with the fact that he was not in favor of Limbaugh being a minority owner? Limbaugh who (as a private citizen ) the Obama administration has called out? That is shameful!

The hatred is spewed from the side against Rush. The NFLPA and NFL should be ashamed of the hate they are spewing!

I finished reading Limbaugh's piece in today's WSJ,"The Race Card, Football and Me" and came away thinking that if the MSM and their cohorts can pull a hatchet job on him, then anyone is fair game. It is the height of pure hypocrisy and hubris that the likes of Jackson and Sharpton can open their yaps about racism. These two wannabes have discredited themselves and their cause so many times, its a wonder they still show their faces. As for the NFL commish wading in on this , it just goes to show you how far the establishment still bends over for this type of extortion. Next thing you know w'ell be cutting a deal for retribution on slavery!

There were 200 comments or when the weekend began, but by tonight there are 1400, mostly liberals, liberalterriers and progressive parasites spamming with the same 20 or so cut and pasted garbage from M#### M######, not going to dignify them, and someone named Robinson Soper, who infests the world wide web with his filth, much like Toddard.
Like Toddy, they parrot the same 2 or 3 things overe and over and over again. These people aren't even afraid of using their real names.

From the American Thinker:

October 16, 2009
Limbaugh Targeted By Obama Official
Joseph Ashby
The plot thickens on the media’s character-lynching of Rush Limbaugh. Of the four stories run on ESPN.com about Limbaugh’s bid for the Rams (October 6, October 12, October 15, and another October 15) none of them mention that NFL Players Association Executive Director DeMaurice Smith served as counsel to Attorney General Eric Holder and was a member of Barack Obama’s transition team.

The October 12 article references Smith’s anti-Limbaugh email meant to garner opposition against the radio host’s bid. The report refers to Smith only as the executive director of the NFLPA. Despite the fact that Smith’s opposition was based on Limbaugh’s political commentary, the report failed to mention that Smith’s political connections (including those to whom he donated thousands of dollars) have a vested interest in Limbaugh’s discrediting.

The October 15 article (the last of four listed above) is decidedly negative toward Limbaugh, portraying him as paranoid about Obama’s involvement in the decision. The report states:

Limbaugh blamed Smith, executive director of the NFLPA and an "Obama-ite," along with Sharpton and Jackson, whom he referred to as "race hustlers," for Checketts' decision to drop him. He said his sacking was an example of the political clout wielded by President Barack Obama's administration.

There is no mention in the piece of Smith’s relationship with Holder or his work on the Obama transition.

It is not as if ESPN didn’t know of Smith’s history. The sports web site ran a report in July which stated:

In selecting Smith this year, the union chose Washington smarts over football experience. Smith, a Washington lawyer, served on the Obama transition team and also worked for Eric Holder before Holder became attorney general.

Smith’s gross conflict of interest and apparent political targeting of Obama’s top foe is a huge story. Unfortunately the media appears too blinded by their prejudice of Limbaugh to report on it.

To summarize, we know that a former Obama official and political ally--who was chosen by the NFLPA specifically for his political clout and connections to the highest rungs of power in government--directly attacked Limbaugh for the radio-talker’s political commentary.

Historically politicians have been prone to vindictive and petty behavior, but never in American history has someone had so much power to pummel his political opponents as President Obama. With control over banks, insurance companies, car companies, media (sports media included) and unions (like the NFL players union), Obama tentacles seem to penetrate into nearly every corner of the nation.

Margie| 10.17.09 @ 8:37PM

Yeah, Obama~ the man who calls himself a Christian, yet bows in obeisance to the Saudi King. Who calls his opponents racists and sends his Union thugs out to our peaceful protestations to use physical force. Liars have to spend eternity in Hell, and I sure wouldn't want to be him.
