Huckabee and Hoffman

Here's Mike's chance to impress conservatives. Also: Hillary: Desperately not seeking Susan.

WILL HE OR WON'T HE?
Fox News host, garage band cover guitarist, and former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee will be making a long-planned speech before the New York Conservative Party in Syracuse, New York on October 28, but has thus far declined to say whether he will formally endorse or financially support Conservative Party House candidate Doug Hoffman, who is running to fill former Rep. John McHugh's 23rd Congressional District seat.

Most Republican Party leaders have thus far taken a pass in endorsing Hoffman, who has the support of the conservative Club for Growth, as well as the American Conservative Union. House minority leader John Boehner and his right hand man, Rep. Eric Cantor have refused to get in the middle of the race, while former House Speaker Newt Gingrich and former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney have also declined to support Hoffman.

Huckabee had agreed to attend the dinner for the state party in upstate New York some time ago and is looking forward to using his speech to draw attention to Hoffman, according to a longtime Huckabee aide. But Huckabee has not decided whether to fully endorse Hoffman or just "say some nice things about him to boost his candidacy," says the source, adding, when asked how far Huckabee might go to support the conservative in the race, "We probably won't be going so far as to let him tap into our national fundraising network, if that's what you mean."

Hoffman is running on the Conservative Party line in the special election after state Republican Party officials and the Republican National Congressional Committee chose to place liberal Dede Scozzafava on the ballot. Sources within Club for Growth, who requested anonymity, say that the organization has recently polled the 23rd District to measure the impact of its $125,000 media buy over the past ten days, and that it appeared that among likely voters, Hoffman may now be running second, with Scozzafava slipping to third. Hoffman has been running TV advertising in several media markets within the district, while the Republican candidate has barely been visible on TV.

RICECAPADES
Advisers to Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton were none too thrilled to see Amb. Susan Rice, Permanent U.S. Representative to the United Nations, given prominent placement in the Situation Room briefing on Afghanistan-Pakistan Wednesday. Rice and Clinton have knocked heads since early in the Obama Administration transition, when Rice demanded the same access and senior staffing levels as Clinton at the State Department was expected to receive. Clinton was present at the meeting as well, via video link. Some Clinton advisers believe that Rice, the former Clinton Administration State Department hand and Brookings Institution fellow, at times has Obama's ear more than Hillary does.

"[Rice] is far more savvy about using her UN post for having her views on international affairs heard than others in the past," says a current Clinton adviser. "It seems like every time we turn around she has something to say about Iran, Iraq, negotiations with Russia, whatever, and Secretary Clinton hasn't had a chance to weigh in at all."

If we want fiscal conservatives in the general election we will have to work for them now. Kick do nothing, status quo candidates to the curb now, and help those you can find who have the both the conviction, and courage to act. I am as guilty as anyone for not doing much of anything during the primaries in the past, but I can change that.

kerry| 10.18.09 @ 1:03PM

please check out removerinos.com this is where you can find out who is running against moderates/liberal republicans like Snowe, McCain, Graham, etc. and donate to support good candidates.

Lawrence Boccardi| 10.15.09 @ 8:07AM

Forget Hoffman, it's Huckabee that sets me off. He stayed in the 2008 race, with no chance of winning, just to suck votes from Romney, to McCain's benefit! Not again.

Ryan| 10.15.09 @ 8:33AM

Huckabee was a better choice over Romney and McCain. Neither are as conservative, and right now we need a rightward jolt in the arm over another pseudo-conservative in control.

Unless a conservative (which Romney isn't) with real-world business experience gets in the race, I'll probably back Huckabee. Conservatives need to stop getting behind Republican elitists and also-rans and statists, and actually stand behind real candidates like Hoffman.

Yes, we may lose a handful of races (like the current Presidency), but we have to send the message to the party leadership to back the candidates we need rather than the ones that will keep the Washington elite pleased.

Grzmlyk| 10.15.09 @ 8:35AM

Huckabee has always struck me as a phony. I will never trust him.

Gazinya| 10.15.09 @ 9:57AM

Huckabee is a huckster. I asked myself when he came onto the scene why would he have to shout "I am the most conservative". Then we find out that he is just another moderate who can be bought and sold. He WANTS to be important, else why leave the pulpit for politics. I am looking for someone in the same vein as Sarah Palin. Someone who has a 'life long' experience of living conservatively. Not someone who decides later in life, "Sure, if it works". Think Romney and Huckaberry.

protobeast| 10.23.09 @ 10:08AM

Huckabee is no huckster, he is a public servant (which is something missing from todays politicians) who speaks really well, and was an excellent Governor, far better than Mitt ever was. He had the toughest border-control plan of the top three, the only one to come out for the FairTax, and the cest NRA ranking.

macdaddy| 10.15.09 @ 10:15AM

Poor Hillary. I'd think she'd quit except that would be the end of her time in politics. Instead, she has to put up with being ineffective at diplomacy while Susan Rice is showing herself to be the true power on foreign affairs. Unfortunately, having Ms. Rice in charge is not good for America. Imagine that! I'm now wishing a Clinton was in charge. Damn you, Obama!

Margie| 10.15.09 @ 5:01PM

Did you know that Hitlery actually started out in life as a conservative? I guess she realized how rich she could become if she gave up her core beliefs and suckered the people. Along with Hubby, of course.

Derek Leaberry| 10.15.09 @ 11:34AM

Mr. Huckabee is bad news for conservatives. Not only was he a big spender as governor, he was a scold of conservatives when they criticzed him for telling the truth about his fiscal liberalism. As governor, he not only acted as a towel-boy for Tyson's Chicken and Walmart, he was enthusiastic about illegal immigration and the ethnic transformation of his state.

Margie| 10.15.09 @ 5:07PM

Fiscal conservative, social Liberal=Liberal.
Fiscal Liberal, social conservative=Liberal.
aka "Moderate."
How about being a conservative through and through? Like Ronald Reagan was? They're out there. Like Sarah Palin. Proof that that's the conservatism America wants was obvious when she came on the scene!

voter| 10.15.09 @ 11:37AM

You Romney supporters just need to get over it, once and for all. Huckabee had every single right to run and stay in the race -- Romney wasn't doing any better than him -- in fact, he was doing worst.

Romney only finds himself in safe situations (like Christie in NJ) but Huckabee has supported (and Hac Pac has donated to) Marco Rubio in Florida and he will, at the very least, say positive things about Hoffman.

Why do you think the NY CONSERVATIVE Party invited Mike (and not mitt) to speak!!

Go Mike!!

Ryan| 10.15.09 @ 12:35PM

Huckabee critics (like the Club for Growth) oversimplify some of the issues that he faced in Arkansas. Huck was the only reasonable candidate pushing the FairTax reforms (sorry Paulites, but you had a bit too little overstated representation).

Notice NOW something - Club for Growth and Huckabee are backing the same guy. That should tell the Republican elitists something.

Adam Smith| 10.15.09 @ 1:28PM

Hucksterbee was the idiot who thought telling America he used to cook squirrels in his popcorn popper (he had to add this took place in a trailer) would make him better identify with the "average joe"...was one of the tools who made the Republicrat party a joke.

He had serious ethical complaints while gov, looted the gov's mansion (like Bubba & co) when leaving, solicited "gifts" from wealthy constituents and ran Arkansas much the Carter did the US.

Enough of Hucksterbee, bobdole, Newt, McLame Lindsay "Lohan" Graham and the rest of their ilk (Hi Olmpia!).

The Republicrats need to decide if they ever want to be a relevant party again, not how they want to divide up the spoils of America!

That's really too bad because YOU are the reason we have President Obama. I would say that Gov. Huckabee or Gov. Romney is a far cry better than Obama. If you can't get out and vote for your party you deserve the President you have....

PCP Smoker| 10.15.09 @ 7:04PM

Take Huckacreep, put him in a garbage bin, and keep him there. Same for that Newt guy. It's time for Paul Ryan, Mike Pence, Sarah P, and Michele Bachmann to be the face of the party. Oh, and no Bushes either.

Linda| 10.16.09 @ 7:05PM

I have never seen such rude and immature bloggers as the ones on this post! You certainly weren't raised with manners! Governor Huckabee is a perfect package of conservatism with common sense! He has his finger on the pulse of The American people and he will win the nomination in a landslide in Ronald Reagan style taking a lot of Huckabee Democrats!!!!

PCP Smoker| 10.16.09 @ 10:24PM

I think it was rude and immature of Huckacreep to team up with McCain in West Virginia to give McLame a victory. McLame was soon to concede the race to Obama.

I think it was ugly that he kept putting down Romney's religion; teaming up with the NYT reporter to innocently ask if mormons "believed that Jesus and the Devil were brothers". Nothing like discussing Mormonism before an interview.

Huckacreep, plenty of "manners, common sense, and class"...NOT!

James| 10.16.09 @ 9:54PM

The little bit I have seen of Huckabee I have truly appreciated. I realize there might be some (many) things that I do not know about him that would cause me to change my mind. What would be helpful to people who are in the same situation as I am is for those to write negative comments about him to spell out at least one important cause that makes him so unacceptable.
BTW, I too think Sarah is one of the best hopes for this nation.

JonH| 2.1.10 @ 2:42PM

Read More, read old archive material from last POTUS election. Huckabee's true self came out. He's in a corrective mode now and hides his record and projects conservative principles. He isn't stupid, just has little class and applies principles with very poor judgement. He is not POTUS timber, character, intelligence.

Yosemeti Sam| 10.17.09 @ 12:27AM

PCP Smoker - has it right to a T.

Additionally, it should be noted Suckabee hails
from Arkansas. Same political spawning pond of the Clintons.

Long Ben| 10.17.09 @ 3:15AM

Romney fouled his nest with social conservatives.
I,m pretty sure irrevocably, because of the lengths he went to embracing the so called gay rights and pro abortion policies, just to be elected in Mass. His conversion to pro life did and does ring hollow. Sanctity of Human life is the hill upon which social conservatives will stand , fight , and die if need be.

JonH| 2.1.10 @ 2:56PM

Long Ben,
Take a closer look at politics in MA. State legislature is 85% Dem and 13% Rep. The % of indep in MA is 51%, but mostly liberal leaning. Romney is LDS and several pols identify LDS as the most conservative group in America today (more than Evangelicals). SOOOOOOOOOOO.....
Even a conservative in MA can't run to win unless he de-emphasizes his conservatism. Outside of MA he can show his real stripes and get somewhere. Romney is a conservative. Read about him at Reagan's baby--The Heritage Foundation. LDS believe in supporting the LAW of The Land----it's fundamental to them as is working to change bad laws. Romney had to back pro gay laws and pro abortion--IT WAS ON THE BOOKS. Learn MA history and see what else Romney did AS Gov there.

TJCL| 10.17.09 @ 6:26PM

I hope that Huckabee fans do a little investigating of their guy - he is a cut throat and a phony. The liberals would love to see him on the ticket - he has much in his closet to expose. It worrys me that so many evangelicals think he's a good guy because he used to be a preacher - there have been a lot of not so stand up preachers folks!

Cris Worth| 10.18.09 @ 9:14AM

I have read in some quarters Mitt Romney first name "Willard" is a shoe-in for the 2012 GOP nomination. I can see it now - some Donkey political operative will run a political commercial as follows: do you remember the 1971 classic “Willard" the man who led an army of plundering rats. We have a sequel and his name is Willard Mitt Romney leading a new generation of plundering corporate rats. Bank on it!

Spicy Joker| 10.18.09 @ 12:57PM

Hucksterbee is a big-spending liberal Republican who PRETENDS to play the bass.

Nitwit Romney is an opportunist who changes his position depending on which way the wind is blowing. When he was governor of Taxachusetts, he signed a bill just like Obamacare. He also declined to run for a second term because he knew he'd lose. What a coward! What a chump!

John Boner and Eric Canturd are the worst Republican leaders ever.

somnolence| 10.18.09 @ 1:45PM

Linda, I am through voting for the party. A future GOP candidate had better have consistent, verifiable 100 percent conservative credentials before they qualify for MY precious vote. I voted for both President Bushes on all occasions and they turned out to be RINOS(although I still like and admire both men as human beings and individuals). NO MORE, THANK YOU! And my prediction is that eventually, maybe even after a cycle of presidential losses, more and more of the population will come to their senses. The GOP desperately needs someone other than just Sara to step forward. And I'm note even sure that Bobby Jindl is that individual. He certainly doesn't impress me as much as Sara does in thought, presentation, candor and demeanor plus long held principles.

…of others thinks it does. Backing Hoffman means going against the Republican establishment. But it also means standing for Conservative principles; the one thing lacking in the GOP right now. I’d love to hear from you Huckabee…

LineInTheSand| 10.25.09 @ 12:56AM

The feeling I had deep down in my gut when Huckabee waffled on endorsing Hoffman is that he is weak, and more concerned about the GOP party establishment, then America. It doesn't matter that he didn't endorse Scozzafava. It's a no brainer to not endorse a liberal RINO. I'm shocked that Ginchrich and Huckabee are that out of tune with conservatives. The old GOP is done. finsished...and they don't see it. If Hoffman does not win this election, and I think he has the momentum to pull it off, then he will be positioned with name recognition to win the same seat next year. Huckabee cannot beat Obama anyway, so he did nothing to further his aspirations of being President. All he did was show where his true loyalties lie. Somehow I feel in my gut that Romney is not hurt by also not endorsing Hoffman. Romney is out campaigning for other conservtives like Jim Demint, and at least Romney doesn't go around pretending to be a preacher slick conservative like Huckabee does. Romney, I believe, will trend more to the right when elected President in 2012. I don't buy the spill that Romney say's anything to get elected. He has flip flopped before on issues before, but he is not perfect. Romney doesn't pretend to be far right on everything like Huckabee does, but I believe Romney will rise to the occasion, seeing what our times call for. I'll keep watching Huckabee play his bass guitar on Fox.

First, kids create a character. After selecting whether to play as a boy or a girl Poptropica , they are assigned a name. Each character's appearance is randomly generated to start with; kids have the option to change almost all of their avatar's physical attributes, such as facial features and clothing. This character can be saved, via a password system, for use in future game-play sessions.

Then, kids enter Poptropica , a virtual world dotted with individual islands. Each island has its own theme, and its own adventure for players to complete. For example, "Time-Tangled Island" is a time-traveling adventure in which players must return objects and characters to their historically accurate periods, while "Spy Island" is a comical thriller with lots of futuristic gadgets. Each has a distinct storyline that is not related to those of the other islands.

Besides the single-player adventure, each island features common rooms, in which poptropica players can play standalone games against other people. These are primarily short, simple, reflex-based games, such as a skydiving competition in which the first person to touch the ground safely wins, or a basketball shooting competition in which the hoop is rising and falling. Players are given a star ranking based on their win-loss record.
