A Pat on the Back
Thirty-five years ago this Sunday President Nixon resigned.
Thirty-five years ago this Sunday, August 9, 1974, I stood next to my girlfriend Pat in the East Room of the White House, about twenty-five feet from where Richard Nixon stood, with his wife, Pat, his children, Julie and Tricia, their husbands, David Eisenhower and Ed Cox, and watched Mr. Nixon give his farewell to the White House staff and the Cabinet and their families.
It was a hot, muggy day and it was raining in my heart. I believe that Mr. Nixon’s speech was the most candid Presidential free associating I have ever heard of. Tales of his father and mother, talk of poverty and triumph, but what I remember most is his parting words to us.
“It’s always a new beginning. Always. The young must know it. The old must know it….Always a new beginning. This isn’t good-bye. The French have a word for it. ‘Au revoir,’ We’ll see you again.” (This is a paraphrase…it was long ago.)
My parents were sitting in the first row of Cabinet people, my mother as ashen and tear sodden as I ever saw her, my father, then Chairman of the Council of Economic Advisers (sic), as devastated as if he had lost a parent, and in a way he had.
When the remarks were over, Mr. Nixon went out to the South Lawn with his wife, Tricia, and Ed Cox. Julie stayed behind to pack.
We all waved good-bye, cried more tears. Then my girlfriend (who worked for the Council of Economic Advisers) and I headed west through the White House to get back to our stations in the Executive Office Building. Even now, it’s hard to say just how lost and sad I was. I felt as if something awful had happened to a man I admired. I felt terribly for Julie. But most of all, I thought my life was over, at age 29. I would lose my job. No one would ever hire me again, and I would be destined for a life of misery and penury. I had just bought my first house with my first mortgage. I was scared.
As I walked out the double doors to the blasting heat of West Executive Avenue, in a miasma of fear and confusion, I felt an amazingly reassuring touch on my back.
A firm, sympathetic pat on the back. I turned to see a wan but warm smile on the face of Fred Dent, Secretary of Commerce, who was a great pal of my father and whose beautiful wife, Millie, was a close friend of my mother. It’s been thirty-five years and I really cannot tell you just how much that pat on the back — without a word — reassured me.
Fred was a South Carolinian, a major power in the world of textiles, a legendary GOP fundraiser, and a magnetic personality. I had met him a few times before, but always under incomparably less stressful circumstances. For him to have extended himself to me in that moment was somehow transfiguring. I felt instantly better and reassured. With friends like Fred Dent behind me, life would go on.
Time passed. I was a speechwriter for Mr. Gerald Ford. I was a columnist at the Wall Street Journal. Then I came to California. I was a TV writer, a screenwriter, a columnist for major newspapers and magazines. For years, I taught law and economics at Pepperdine University in Malibu. I was an expert witness in trials about securities law issues, a witness before Congressional Committees.
By total chance, life made me a movie and TV cult figure. Time and chance, which happeneth to all men, gave me money, took away money, gave me back some money, gave me great highs and great lows.
I learned the virtues of constant work, of endless inner mobility and flexibility. In a real sense, I started running scared the day Richard Nixon resigned and I realized I had a mortgage to pay — and I am still running scared. When I meet people who do not work every single day, I am amazed. That’s the only kind of life I have known for 35 years. When I talk to a young person without a job who tells me her day’s job hunting that day was to go to a few websites and then to play golf, I am simply baffled. When I meet an unemployed person who goes out for sushi without a dime in savings, I am bewildered. My long ago girlfriend and I ate Hamburger Helper after Mr. Nixon resigned. (It was darned good, too.) In a way, the fear that was stuck into me when Mr. Nixon rode off on that helicopter to San Clemente was the best teacher I have ever had. I can exactly date the beginning of the work ethic that got me into a position of modest affluence and prominence to that day in August 1974.
I can also say that I am still pals with many of the people I worked with in the Nixon White House — my fellow members of the speechwriting shop, John Coyne, Aram Bakshian, Ken Khachigian, and our boss, Dave Gergen, who all gave me their own pats on the back later on. Even now, with my parents gone, Mr. Nixon gone, dear friends my age gone far too young, I can say that I learned the value of a touch at just the right moment on August 9, 1974 at the encouraging hand of Fred Dent, who has had his own terrible losses, but is still stalwart in South Carolina. “A little touch of Harry in the night,” referring to King Henry V casually and individually rallying his men the night before battle, said Shakespeare, was largely the reason for the British victory at Agincourt. For such small victories as I have had since 1974, much is owed to that pat on the back from Fred Dent as I walked into the sweltering, brutal August, Washington, D.C. pressure cooker. Bear it in mind when you see someone in fear. The human touch of sympathy can turn night into day.
Just today, August 5, 2009, I spent most of the day on Lake Pendoreille in my boat in the sun and wind. As the day wore down, and as I thought about how old I am and how much of my life is over — suggested, I guess, by the setting sun — I passed under the immense railroad bridge. Just as I emerged into daylight, a bright yellow Burlington Northern Santa Fe locomotive appeared pulling an immense freight train. Silhouetted by the sun, mirrored in the water, the train was such a mighty sight that I waved my right arm enthusiastically at the lead locomotive’s engineer. I was answered at once by three deafening blasts on the train’s horn, greetings, pats on the back from a fellow traveler on the planet, in glorious North Idaho. I felt euphoric.
“It doesn’t get much better than that,” said my pal and boating instructor, Tim Farmin. No, encouragement in this fragile life from a freight train makes a day complete. God bless you, BNSF engineer. God bless you, Secretary Dent and John Coyne and Aram and Ken and Dave and Phil and Wlady and Bob and Julie and above all, Mom and Pop, and my saint wife, and all who got me through to an afternoon on an Idaho lake where for a few hours, maybe I wasn’t running scared after all.

Nixon was a shoo- in for another term. Some of his party hacks swiped some Demo strategy papers from a room in the Watergate hotel.
If he could simply have brought himself to "fess up" when he found out about it...I still believe the American people would have chuckled, "politics as usual".
...and he just may have kept South Viet Nam from being over run for lack of ammo.

Thanks for the good article, Mr. Stein.
Back in the early 1970s, when I was a student in Atlanta, the Nixons came to town to be in a campaign parade. I was one of the Nixonettes who walked in the parade (I still have my parade scarf and other event items), and I was able to take some nice photos of the Nixons as they rode along with us in an open car.
Back at my dorm, I showed the photos to the Cuban woman who was in charge of our hall. She had just become a citizen, and told me that I should send copies of the photos to the Nixons. She was so proud to be a new American, and she kept after me until I sent them.
In return, I got such a nice personal note from Pat Nixon, along with a color Bachrach photo of the Nixon family. They are among my best souvenirs.

President Nixon was, as I think you mentioned on Beck a while ago, a great man. He guided this nation through its worst period of civil unrest since the Civil War.
Those of us who worked for him, (youth for Nixon 1968) remember him well. All great men have flaws as did he. Still his successes outnumber his failure such as wage and price controls, far and away.
In 1991 Colodny and Gettlin published "Silent Coup", which tells a chilling story of how the left began to violate our system as they do to this day.
President Nixon held the fort against a plethora of enemies and for this he is unforgiven, but should be honored. This day is a dark on in our history and should be remembered for what was lost.

I remember that day too, Ben; I watched it on TV from Arizona and the future seemed bleak to me as well. Since then, I've had down days and up days but occasionally I remember the first President ever voted for flying away on Marine One. I agree that if he had simply 'fessed up' it would have blown over in a fortnight. He didn't and we've never been the same; it's like something died in the national soul and people with little integrity and gravitas have been in control since. But thanks, Ben, your recollections of that train brought back memories of similar sunny days waving at engineers when I was a boy. I enjoy hearing what you have to say, keep it up.

If these ‘accidents’ were really accidents, we’d expect them to be ‘politically neutral.’ But they’re not. The victims always seem to be someone Jews just happen to be worried about.
It hasn’t been put in a better manner. Here we consider the strange deaths or murders of many people in leadership positions. In all cases they were a threat to the Jewish crime network and the Jews were the major beneficiaries of the deaths of these leaders.

Jewish Ritual Murder and the Kosher Baby Slaughter Business Known as the Abortion Industry: What Blood Libel?

Jews have a long history of being accused of ritual murders of non-Jewish children, which they call blood libel. We occasionally encounter stories of people lynched after being accused of witchcraft or black magic in today’s Third World societies. Analogously, we can assume that in superstitious Medieval European societies it would’ve been easy to convince the masses of satanic behaviors on the part of a minority. But the question is why have Jews been repeatedly accused of ritual murder of Christian children in country after country?
It’s because Jews were really engaging in ritual murder of non-Jewish children. Here are some resources that document the evidence:

More recently, Jewish professor at Bar-llan University Ariel Toaff wrote a book, Pasque di Sangue (Passover of Blood), in 2007, where he found that the charges of ritual murder leveled against Jews were true. There was an uproar in Israel, and Toaff had to move to Italy. Toaff was forced to pull his book from stores and release an updated version describing the ritual murder charges as unfounded.
The details of the blood sacrifices are gory: ritual cannibalism, i.e., consuming young Christian blood for magical and therapeutic purposes; the crucifixion of children on the evening before Passover, and the use of Christian blood as an ingredient in the unleavened bread consumed during the festivities.
Blood played a central role in the celebration of Passover: the blood of the lamb, marking the release from slavery of Egypt, and the blood of the prepuce, originating from the circumcision of new-born males of Israel, which the Rabbi performing the circumcision drank (some combination of homosexuality, pedophilia and sexual sadism!).
In the ritual dinner of Passover, the solemn unleavened blood was kneaded with clotted blood, while more dried blood was sprinkled into the wine before reciting the ten curses of Egypt. One type of blood was considered more effective for the purpose than that of a Christian child killed for the occasion: the blood of a new Agnus Dei, to be consumed for magical purposes, to precipitate the ruin of the persecutors, cursed followers of a false and mendacious faith. Some Jews regarded the blood of Christian infants as appropriate revenge for their persecution at the hands of Christians, but the reason Christians persecuted the Jews in the first place was vile Jewish behavior. Jews considered powdered blood to have therapeutic value: alleviating epileptic seizures, stimulating sexual desire, as a haemostatic (blood-clotting) agent, and for arresting menstrual hemorrhages and nose bleeds. A Jewish black market dealing in Rabbi-certified ‘kosher blood’ flourished in parts of Europe during the thirteenth century.
Given Jews’ history of ritual child murders, it’s no surprise that they dominate the abortion industry in the United States of America and elsewhere.

Barack Hussein Obama at Risk for Assassination by Jews

The election of Barack Hussein Obama as President of the United States of America was a disastrous event, not because of Obama’s racial background (black + Jew), but because the Jews could kill him and blame it on white supremacists, getting blacks to riot and wreak havoc across America, and also for reasons related to Obama’s birth.
White supremacists/racialists/separatists/nationalists and Barack Hussein Obama
All thinking white supremacists/racialists/separatists/nationalists know that the race of the American President hardly matters because he is no more than a Jew tool. The people who rule are the ones who issue money, and in the United States of America, the government doesn’t issue money, the bankers do under the auspices of Jews. If the U.S. government issued its own money it wouldn’t be under $10 trillion-plus in debt; it would have no debt.
Yet the Jews would like people to believe that President Obama has upset the white supremacists because he is black. The truth is that many white supremacists/nationalists rooted for Obama because they believed that Obama would be a disaster and help awaken white America into taking back their country. I know of a white nationalist who supported Obama because he thought Obama would be less subservient to Jews!
White supremacists/nationalists have nothing whatsoever to gain from killing Obama and lots to lose by doing so. But the Jews have been preparing the public for Obama’s assassination, if needed for their cause.
Here’s an example of two clowns, presumably Jewish – Cowart is used by some Jews and Schlesselman seems to be an uncommon name, who allegedly plotted to rob a gun store, assassinate Obama and kill 88 blacks, including 14 by beheading. The plausibility of fulfilling this goal stretches the imagination far beyond the wildest Hollywood fantasy scenario. This was a classic Jew hoax. As the narrative goes, these nincompoops planned on robbing a gun store to get their weapons, but were scared off by dogs!
The Jews have given publicity to other alleged individuals that have plotted to kill Obama: Alfred Brock, Tharin Gartrell, Nathan Johnson and Shawn Adolf, Raymond Hunter Geisel, etc. One of these people, Steven Joseph Christopher, made a fake threat against Obama to try to get media nattention, and as he was being hauled away he told the camera crew that he was trying to bring attention to the fact that Obama is a Jew tool, but the mainstream media portrayed him as a nut with a message from God.
And then we come across agent of the Jews’, David Duke’s take on the Obama assassination threat (#), which is another indication that the Jewish crime network is preparing the public for a possible assassination of Obama.

As to Nixon, he should have hung tough. The whole mess started with a plan to uncover dimocrat prostitution ring- that's right- dims had scheme for providing whores in exchange for votes and to use for "leverage". Nixon's boys figured it would be great to nail them with it- slush funds, sex, blackmail. Too bad, Nixon would have won second term anyway.
Couple of million SE Asians would be alive today who died due to the democrat coup.
As to the "pat on the back", boy are you right there Ben. It is so easy to hurt with a few words, how much better to encourage each other in this vale of tears- especially young folks- and for that matter old folks too. Why not laugh?

For all his flaws, President Nixon performed two acts that would be unheard of today. He refused to contest the 1960 election when he had legitimate reason to do so ( example, Daley and Cook County) and was strenuously encouraged to do so. He later resigned instead of putting the country through an impeachment which he knew would be destructive to the nation. Can one imagine Clinton or Obama or Carter doing similar?

I enjoyed reading this pieces too; I always like Mr Stein's contributions around here.
I'm not sure I can agree with some of the favorable things being said about Nixon; he certainly was a great man. He was brilliant and he loved this country. He was also, however, deeply flawed -- not just like all politicians, but to an extent we'd never seen before and haven't seen since. That said, I also appreciate the respect and admiration people who worked for him had, and I'm not one to quarrel with that.
I'm embarrassed by and completely sick of the anti-semitic rants above by some loser that desperately needs some kind of psychiatric treatment.

Elitists want to microchip Americans in name of fighting terrorism, Europeans universally opposed to attack on Iran, Globalists fear oil prices rising too quickly
Sources from inside the 2008 Bilderberg meeting have leaked the details of what elitists were discussing in Chantilly Virginia last week and the talking points were ominous - a plan to microchip Americans under the pretext of fighting terrorist groups which will be identified as blonde haired, blue eyed westerners.
Veteran Bilderberg sleuth Jim Tucker relies on sources who regularly attend Bilderberg as aides and assistants but who are not Bilderberg members themselves. The information they provided this year is bone-chilling for those who have tracked the development of the plan to make the general public consider implanted microchips as a convenience as routine as credit cards.
"Under the heading of resisting terrorism there were points made about how the terrorist organizations are recruiting people who do not look like terrorists - blonde, blue eyed boys - they're searching hard for those types to become the new mad bombers," said Tucker.
As we have documented, the blue eyed blonde haired Al-Qaeda line is a familiar talking point that has been pushed on Fox News and within other Neo-Con circles in an attempt to turn the anti-terror apparatus around to target dissidents, protesters and the American people in general.
Ominously, Tucker's source also told him that Bilderberg were discussing the microchipping of humans on a mass scale, which would be introduced under the pretext of fighting terrorism whereby the "good guys" would be allowed to travel freely from airports so long as their microchip could be scanned and the information stored in a database.
Tucker said the idea was also sold on the basis that it would help hospital staff treat a patient in an emergency situation because a scan of the chip would provide instantaneous access to health details.
Tucker underscored that Bilderberg were talking about subdermally implanted chips and not merely RFID chips contained in clothing. The discussion took place in a main conference hall and was part of the agenda, not an off-hand remark in the hotel bar.
Such a bizarre concept may seem unbelievable to some, but over the last ten years there have been dozens of examples of people accepting implanted chips for a variety of different reasons.
In 2004, Mexico's attorney general and 160 of his office staff were implanted with tracker chips to control access to to secure areas of their headquarters.
The Baja Beach Club in Barcelona and other nightclubs around the world are already offering implantable chips to customers who want to pay for drinks with the wave of a hand and also get access to VIP areas of the club lounge.
Bilderberg skeptical of attack on Iran
Tucker's source told him that Secretary of Defense Robert Gates did attend Bilderberg despite him not appearing on the official list.
Tucker said that his sources told him Gates was in attendance to present his case for war with Iran, but that the majority of Bilderberg members were against an attack at this time.
"The Europeans were generally opposed to an invasion of Iran - Gates made the regular war propaganda drill about how Iran is a nuclear threat to everybody," said Tucker, adding that European Bilderbergers made snide comments about where such nuclear weapons actually were being kept and at one point joking that they were possibly "in Saddam Hussein's tomb".
Despite Bilderberg opposition, Tucker said that the administration was still considering an attack before Bush leaves office in January.
"At least 90 per cent of the Europeans oppose a war, probably closer to 100 per cent," said Tucker, adding, "most of the Americans were passive and deferential to the Secretary of Defense and Condoleezza Rice's pitch in so far as Iran is concerned".
Tucker said that most Americans present at the meeting were opposed to attacking Iran but dare not be as visible and loud in their opposition as the Europeans.
Energy and oil prices
"One of the Bilderberg boys raised this question - should we put a lid on the rise in oil prices, are we reaching the point of diminishing returns," said Tucker, adding that Bilderberg noted how Americans were trading in their SUV's in record numbers for small and more fuel efficient cars and using more public transport to combat high gas prices.
Tucker's source said that Bilderberg were predicting $5 for a gallon of gas by the end of this summer and oil over $150 dollars a barrel, but that this was a ceiling and oil prices would probably begin to decline thereafter because they thought the acceleration had happened too quickly.
As we previously reported, Bilderberg called for oil prices to soar in 2005 when oil was a mere $40 a barrel.
During the conference in Germany, Henry Kissinger told his fellow attendees that the elite had resolved to ensure that oil prices would double over the course of the next 12-24 months, which is exactly what happened.
During their 2006 meeting in Ottawa Canada, Bilderberg agreed to push for $105 a barrel before the end of 2008. With that target having been smashed months ago, the acceleration towards $150 is outstripping even Bilderberg's goal, which is why the elitists expressed a desire to cool prices at least in the short term.
Just two days after he left Bilderberg, Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke, George W. Bush and others expressed support for a strong dollar and Bernanke hinted that interest rates could rise, which immediately caused oil prices to drop in line with Bilderberg's consensus.

The Jews are preparing the Israelis for the mass casualties soon to befall humanity, by making them feel isolated and hated. Jewish leaders want the Jews of Israel to feel that the World is against them and planning to annihilate them, so as to justify a Jewish attack on the World and to win the support of common Israeli Jews for such an attack on the human race.

I know it may sound childish to a lot of people who call themselves adults, but one of the few earthly things that has the power to soothe my soul is the sight and sound of a train. Maybe it's the notion of confident power, maybe the vision of future horizons not yet explored. But hearing that whistle when you give the engineer the wave is worth its weight in gold.

I saw Ben in Arkansas a few months back and someone in the crowd asked him about why he had always defended Nixon even after the bad things we learned about him. He said rather insightfully that Richard Nixon was a peacemaker that reached out to China, ended Vietnam etc.

I see that the monsters from the "Judenfrei Jew Review" are commenting here as well as after other TAS articles. In case any TAS readers don't know, the JJR is, according to its own Web site, "aiming to expose the Jewish crime network and set the stage for the expulsion of Jews from the United States of America as well as other Western societies."
Their Web site says that "Jews won't stop with their criminal agenda. They have to be stopped by us." JJR is "dedicated to the Jewish problem." It says that "the Holocaust is a hoax" and that "Jews did 9/11."
It also has a number of items against black Americans, including lurid cartoons. In a comment, one fan suggests writing articles that "present a detailed anecdote of black malfeasance, [but] don't cap it off with how much you hate blacks now. Let the reader live through your imparted experience, and come to dislike blacks on his own." Clearly, these monsters use the same tactic to try to turn people against Jews.
The person who writes the Web site notes the formation of the "One World Nazi Party," and says that "if they are serious or if some other serious contenders come up, then Judenfrei could join in to set up a formal movement to expel Jews."
I hope the TAS staff will find a way to keep these neo-Nazis out. Nothing they have to say is worth reading.
