Another Perspective

Darkness at High Noon

In recent weeks, I have attended two lectures that discussed what could be the greatest existential threat to the U.S: EMP, or electromagnetic pulse, attacks. Although an EMP attack would utilize conventional nuclear weapons, it is an infrequently discussed aspect of our nuclear policy, and one for which we are woefully unprepared. Furthermore, the potential effects highlight the gravity and immediacy of the rogue nuclear threat.

The way an EMP attack would work is as follows. An attacker would launch a nuclear weapon into orbit. However, rather than hitting American territory and obliterating a city with scorching flames, the weapon would detonate above the Earth's atmosphere. Instead of seeing a mushroom cloud upon impact, we would simply be left in the dark. Almost all forms of electricity, including cell phones and other battery-operated devices, would cease to work; airplanes would literally rain from the sky.

Unlike past blackouts, such as the one that occurred in the summer of 2003 and left much of the northeastern U.S. without electricity, the lights would not come back on for years potentially. The U.S. would be plunged into a primitive state in which people scrounged for food and water to survive. Money would be worthless, our economy would revert to bartering, and one's most valuable assets would be guns and ammunition.

So, how likely or plausible is this sort of attack? More so than we would like. In 2004, the Electromagnetic Pulse Commission, which Congress established, issued a Report of the Commission to Assess the Threat to the United States from Electromagnetic Pulse (EMP) Attack." It concluded that "EMP is one of a small number of threats that has the potential to hold our society seriously at risk and might result in defeat of our military forces." The Commission issued another report in 2008 in which it concluded that "The electromagnetic pulse generated by a high altitude nuclear explosion is one of a small number of threats that can hold our society at risk of catastrophic consequences."

On May 6, the Congressional Commission on the Strategic Posture of the United States also issued a report in which it addressed EMP, saying, "We note also that the United States has done little to reduce its vulnerability to attack with electromagnetic pulse weapons and recommend that current investments in modernizing the national power grid take account of this risk." The report also stated that "Prior commissions have investigated U.S. vulnerabilities and found little activity under way to address them," and "EMP vulnerabilities have not yet been addressed effectively by the Department of Homeland Security. Doing so could take several years."

The 2008 Commission report recommended that "The Department of Homeland Security should add content to Web sites it maintains, such as www.Ready.gov." It appears, however, that the DHS has neglected to do so thus far. Instead, it has included a short description of potential EMP effects in its "Are you ready? An in-depth guide to citizen preparedness" report. In the report, it actually misleads citizens into thinking that EMP is virtually harmless, saying that "Although an EMP is unlikely to harm most people, it could harm those with pacemakers or other implanted electronic devices."

If all of this is not enough to wake up members of Congress and a seemingly unaware public, then recent activity by American adversaries should. The Wall Street Journal reported in April that Russia, China, and other countries have "penetrated the U.S. electrical grid and left behind software programs that could be used to disrupt the system."

Furthermore, Iran and North Korea recently conducted long-range missile tests, and North Korea may launch another missile soon in the direction of Hawaii. Military experts also believe that Iran is specifically simulating an EMP strike, and an Iranian military journalist recently said that "If the world's industrial countries fail to devise effective ways to defend themselves against dangerous electronic assaults then they will disintegrate within a few years."

All of this highlights the poor timing of Defense Secretary, Robert Gates' proposed $1.4 billion cut in missile defense spending. And while our government has done little to address the EMP threat to date, it is, by most accounts, something that we have the resources for which to prepare. While it would cost several billion dollars to achieve preparedness for an EMP attack, it would likely cost less than what the U.S. government has already wasted on General Motors and Chrysler. It requires, however, a public that is aware and which demands action from Congress and the administration. The time for that action is now.

Ha, an EMP attack would be the godsend the libtards hope for. In one fell swoop, we would be living in the early 19th Century. No more energy usage, poverty for the masses. One would have to be a fool to think that exposure to this threat isn't intentional.

NoToObamessiah| 7.1.09 @ 7:05AM

Scary stuff. But don't you feel better knowing Napalitano is in charge? what a lame appointment that was.

Melvin| 7.1.09 @ 7:17AM

People, those buffoons in the Congress and the Senate cannot even run their own dining facilities and we expect them to protect this nation from such destruction?
Not worry though, Stewart Smalley aka Al Franken will save us. How a once esteemed body could turn into a bunch of self-serving blabbering jackasses.

KC Klampert| 7.1.09 @ 8:26AM

Pretty much dead on, except I doubt that "...airplanes would literally rain from the sky." True, electronics play a big part in aviation, and some aircraft would go down (hydraulics failure, loss of weather radar at a very bad time are a couple of possibilities.), but "raining"? Newton and Bernoulli would beg to differ....

The above aside, EMP is a genuine threat. Although new military facilities are, undoubtedly, being constructed using conductive concrete, the old ones are at substantial risk.

Now is an extremely dangerous time to downgrade our missile defenses....

Jack-in-the-Box| 7.1.09 @ 9:29AM

what would be the geographic scope of such an explosion be, or how targeted would it be? And, might the explosion affect the aggressor?

Boeing Boeing| 7.1.09 @ 11:14AM

Airbus aircraft would indeed rain from the skies as they are all fly by wire with fadec engine controls all of which are controlled by computers that would be burned out by the EMP, thus shutting off the engines and rendering the aircraft uncontrollable at which point gravity would take hold and they would crash to earth.

ds80| 7.1.09 @ 11:22AM

Not that it would preclude an initial EMP strike but ....

14 USA Trident submarines x 24 missiles tubes each x 4 to 12 MIRVs per missile = up to 4 thousand responses.

Ray| 7.1.09 @ 11:25AM

I have to disagree about the effects of EMP on modern aircraft. Modern aircraft are designed to withstand a lightning strike, one that produces millions of watts of current. It is very rare that a direct hit by lightning has disableds an airplane and brought it crashing to earth. If a lightning strike wouldn't cause massive electronic failures, why would the far weaker effects of an EMP cause such a failure? I don't think it would.

Dave Lincoln| 7.1.09 @ 11:59AM

"... airplanes would literally rain from the sky. " Give me a fricken' break Brett! Where'd you learn to write? I figure maybe you did a co-op with the National Enquirer. No, airplanes will not literally rain from the sky.

But, I will say, I would rather be in a Boeing first, tied for 1st would be an older Douglas or Boeing of 737-200 vintage, 2nd would be a Canadair, last would be an Airbus (Newer Embraers tied for last place, with the scarebuses).

OK, after that rude interruption I will continue reading your article. Hopefully, I won't run into any more stupid crap, or that's it, dude. 2 strikes in this ballgame for me.

The threat of an EMP attack against the United States is negligible - in the context of our nation being defended by a competent civilian Commander in Chief. Unfortunately, the CMC (Chief Moral Coward) currently sitting in the Oval Office appears neither competent, nor qualified, to make adequate decisions concerning national security.

The latest case in point is Honduras. There, a Chavez wannabe, Zelaya, has unilaterally declared a nationwide referendum on amending that country's constitution to permit him to run for office for a second term. However, such a referendum is possible only with an affirmative vote of the legislature, which refuses to vote for such a referendum. Regardless, Zelaya ordered the referendum to go forward and his friend, Chavez, printed and shipped - from Venezuela - hundreds of thousands of "ballots" for just such a purpose. Honduras' Supreme Court, and Attorney General, declared Zelaya's actions to be illegal - and sent him into exile. Zelaya is now orchestrating demonstrations by the masses of poor people in that nation and the thuggery, gangsterism, and street-fighting symptomatic of a leftist takeover is well underway.

Our CMC (surprise, surprise) supports Zelaya in this process and stands against the rule of law in that country.

This sort of craven pandering to dictators, thugs, and murderers suggests that Obama believes that there isn't much to fear from such enemies. His posturing suggests that, given a choice between defending America (and offending these goons) or not defending America (and getting paid lip service by these goons), he'd rather not defend America. Hence, the threat of EMP looms larger under this clown's stewardship of our nation.

I have seen the enemy, and it is ourselves - for having put this poltroon into the seat of power of our (once and future) great nation.

Sorry ds80, but the tools that are now in power would dither about looking for 100% proof as to who did the deed, then the blather would begin, the UN consulted, etc. We would be screwed and no retalitation would, in my opinion, be forthcoming.

Dave| 7.1.09 @ 1:15PM

I would be interested in knowing, other than missile defense, what else can we do to protect us against this threat?

Old Texican| 7.1.09 @ 1:48PM

Hi Dave
I am so glad you asked that question.

In 1988, I wrote...(and sold) a series of novels about that very thing under a pen name. I have written other best sellers, but that series never went to print when The Soviets imploded right about then.
If you go to amazon.com...look under "civil defense" or "effects of nuclear weapons" or "nuclear civil defense"...etc.

Bottom line...your lawnmower might run. light aircraft engines( no fuel injection) might run because they run off magnetos instead of a computer chip spark distributer.
Your radio won't work unless you have wrapped it in aluminum foil several layers with intervening layers of non conductive material. (blankets, to rubber sheets.)
Radio stations and cell lines will be gone.

Bicycles would be GOOD!

The threat of EMP is real..and imminent...and devastating.
(Of course Obama would not like it...his teleprompter would short out.)

Louis Jenkins| 7.1.09 @ 1:52PM

The threat of EMPs has been around since inception of the nuclear bomb. The 1962 Atmospheric Test Treaty between Russia and the US is a result of the full discovery of its potent value as a weapon. An EMP bomb or device detonated over the mid US could render us helpless. Even if airplanes don't rain out of the sky our cars won't start, so we'll have to walk. Imagine the horror if some of our neighbors had to walk somewhere, or their microwave ovens, computers, curling irons, or TVs went kaput. Kids would go nuts because their Nitendos and Wii s stopped working. Follow the link to the down and dirty about EMPs.

http://www.unitedstatesaction.com/emp-terror.htm

According to this document you could make an EMP device for as little as $400.00.

Ed| 7.1.09 @ 2:16PM

A nuclear EMP detonation over Omaha would disable most of the Continental USA (Maine, Florida, San Diego, and Washington State might be far enough away to be out from under the footprint. It is the magnetic field, not the electrical field that is dangerous to microcircuits. The only civilian devices that would survive are vacuum tube devices and perhaps the first generation of transistor devices. Anything with a integrated circuit would probably be fried. Airbus aircraft have 100% electronic flight control systems. An EMP strike would indeed cause then to crash.

Old Texican| 7.1.09 @ 2:16PM

OKOK (grin)
Put the aluminum foil I mentioned above in my hat.
Here goes: The best ONE book at Amazon is "Nuclear War survival skills" It was written by a top guy at Oakridge Labs (US nuke center).

There are several other books you should have...in your "travel/ evacuation pack" you choose according to your own situation.

In order of priority in my mind, whether nukes or a breakdown of society for any number of causes:

1. Pre-positioning of food, shelter, and medicine in a rural setting. (A family farm is best shot.) and a written agreement to farm 2 acres...even with family.

2. The ability to defend same against marauders.

3. Bicycles with little trailers to carry necessities to rural location.

4. enough stored staples to tide you/yours over till you can get a crop in. (Mormans are brilliant at this. Find their books on food storage.)

5. BE ALERT AND GET OUT OF TOWN BEFORE THE RUSH! (REPEAT THREE TIMES AND WRITE IT ON YOUR HAND!)

6. PLASTICIZE A COPY OF OUR DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE AND CONSTITUTION! TAKE IT WITH YOU.

Good luck and God bless

Old Texican| 7.1.09 @ 2:23PM

OH...continuing my tin-foil hat exercise:

A successful EMP strike/s over North America would absolutely "reduce" our live population by 60% to 70% percent over the following year, according to most experts.
(gulp)

Dave Lincoln| 7.1.09 @ 2:48PM

Texican, I don't agree with you. (sorry about that, as about the political stuff I almost always do).

"... light aircraft engines( no fuel injection) might run because they run off magnetos instead of a computer chip spark distributer."

Nope, even with fuel injection, most older piston aircraft engines will run fine. They still have dual magnetos, just no carburetor. Now, a modern Cirrus or Diamond is another story. I am not sure whether the engines on them will run with no electricals. But, that gets me to my point about flying.

You don't need engine power for an airplane to fly! Come on. I know you know that, Texican, but I think the other poster, "Boeing Boeing" does not. Of course the airplane has to be landed after some time, but there is no "falling out of the sky" phenomenon, just lots of forced landings. Leave the "falling out of the sky stuff" to the modern-day idiot journalists and our congressaholes.

Oh, most turbine engines will run if the FADEC fails. The engineers are not stupid, or we'd all be long dead. However, the modern electronic instruments and displays will be gone, depending on how the back-up power is rigged up, and would make for an emergency anyway. Also, the Airbuses are a particular problem, as their designers value computer output over human decision-making. That has caused crashes in the past, and it is a main design philosophy difference between ScareBus and Boeing.

So, OK, I 'd rather be mowing my lawn than be up in the air during this EMP, I grant you that. But, this author should quit the crazy talk about "raining airplanes from the sky".

Dave Lincoln| 7.1.09 @ 2:50PM

Shoot, sorry Texican, I just realized you were talking to a different Dave. However, my views on the effect on aircraft still stand.

Old Texican| 7.1.09 @ 3:02PM

Lincoln
No offense taken. I have owned 5 Bonanzas, and heh heh...two Bellanca Supercharged Vikings. (Oh what an orgasm to own and fly a Vike, grin.)

I was trying to be brief...and merely suggest where people might look for a power source post EMP.
Some diesels might run as well.
If I got some folks to get the books I did good and perhaps saved their families.

You are right...wings fly airplanes...not engines.
Nevertheless, electronic control systems , unhardened, will kill some folks.

cnc| 7.1.09 @ 3:03PM

And to kill the zombie hordes you have to destroy the brain.
But seriously. Yes EMP weapons are real and potentially dangerous. But no politcal party (Dem., Rep, Lib, Green...) will do any rapid preperation because it is too expensive and improbable. Maybe a steady improvement in the durability/design standards of electronics would work, but that would infringe on my right to blithly ignore potential risks (unless you've decided you like big government mandates after all).
I'm not going to do anymore than pack an emergency travel kit. I don't have the money to spare to buy a nice S&W let alone a 5 acre farm and 3 years of food.

Al Adab| 7.1.09 @ 3:04PM

Our friend Old Texican is thoughtful and precient. If EMP attaqcks occur his scenario might even be considered optimistic. The big problem is water at least in most parts of the country west of 100 degrees longitude. Farming is difficult off pluvial acreage. Little or no rain. River valleys might offer prospects but certainly such conditions invite the creation of a feudal society.
We had better know, TODAY, where this administration and Congress stand on missle defense. The need is desperate for our preservation. I fear that Cap and Trade, Hate crimes, and Health care- all of which seem to demand totalitarian "solutions"- take precedent in their minds. One does wonder if perhaps the administration really would prefer a pre-industrial America. God help us all if we must defend our Constitution against our Government.

Gill O’Teen ✝✡| 7.1.09 @ 3:10PM

EMP is a moot point with the appointment of frankenberry to the senate. Cap and Trade will accomplish the same thing and without the expense of a nuclear missile launch.

Study "trickle hose irrigation".

...and look for small dams to kill the outflow gates, and close them for a resevoir for your irrigations. (you gotta' have seeds first.)

Yeah, we gotta' accept those concepts.

Al Adab| 7.1.09 @ 4:07PM

Texican,
I take it you like that turn of phrase. Thanks. Used to cover a lot of the country in a Super Viking myself. Not as nice as the V tail Beech but more fun. (and no wobble) As to 100th Longitude, Abilene lies at 99.7 degrees west. Rainfall west of 100 is limited which explains Big Spring, Midland, et al and the LLano Estacado. Did my upt at Webb 1971. Without running creeks to dam trickle won't help. Too dependant on the local system. Water table at about 700 ft. Out in the hills maybe a small stream or two.

Gill O’Teen ✝✡| 7.1.09 @ 4:21PM

Old Texican, from a quick study of my trusty Atlas, one that’s not about to shrug, it appears that the 100° longitudinal line forms the east/west border between Oklahoma and Texas up near the Oklahoma panhandle. It runs through Dodge City, Kansas. It appears to run directly through the Texas cities of Merkel (west of Abilene), Camp Wood (in Real County), and the Uvalde County towns of Montell and Blewett.

Old Texican| 7.1.09 @ 4:53PM

Al Adab, Gill...
Thanks!
My answer.........."prepare to move east...or to the mountains!"
My God, Adab, bonanzas are certainly "nice"....but Vikes GET YOU HOME SAFE!
Over the last ten years, my wife and I punched through...weather stuff...that killed our fellow route followers (within a couple of miles).
...not one structural failure in over 40 years manufacture.
Well...I don't sell Vikes...but I am alive because of pure quality.
I do like the non-fatigueable flexible wooden wings as shock absorbers.

Some thoughts:

With regards to missile defense options, I'm wondering if there is truly a way to defuse such a missle attack, or if the resulting destruction would result ultimately in exactly the same effect intended? Except it does seem the higher up the explosion occurs, the worse the gamma radiation. So if a missile could be stopped as close to the ground/sea as possible, the less the damage.

Are there alternate energy sources "off the grid"? It seems that the results primarily affect physical infrastructure connected to an affected source, so that the trouble with such an attack is the length of time required to physically reinstall the power lines. Devices simply unplugged at the time of an attack, may not be affected. Devices operating on battery power --or alternate energy such as solar cell or windpower--also may be less affected.
Once the shockwave is over, and power lines and sources re-established, electrical energy itself would work again, correct? Fire would still burn, as well as gasoline and propane fuel, and steam and coal plants could be started up again? Would fiber optic infrastructure be equally affected as metallic wire? Would solar cels still be effective?

Gliders would probably stay up if up, as well as balloons, and new planes that weren't running during the attack should start up again afterwards, correct?

Instead of running to the hills and predicting Mad Max dark ages, wouldn't a better option be to design alternate technology to shield electrical systems from EMP beforehand? Doesn't the Blackbird have this already?

Please excuse too many questions....I'm female.

There's a lot of disagreement about what an EMP strike would do. There seems to be a lot of fearmongering on this blog. I've heard engineers speak intelligently and convincingly on both sides of the issue. So who knows

kdb| 7.1.09 @ 7:37PM

Hello Texican,
my questions were open-ended, and not directed towards you, but I appreciate your response, even if it seems your intent is more to sell your books rather than be informative.
By the way, nice plane. http://home.att.net/~vikingdrvr/AvConsumer.html
Going back to my first question, it was:
"With regards to missile defense options, I'm wondering if there is truly a way to defuse such a missle attack." If there really is no practical way to, then efforts in that direction would be pointless. What remains are the options for dealing with available resources once an attack occurs. I was trying to determine, with my own limited understanding of electrical engineering, which resources would be least affected by an EMP attack, and which most quickly revived afterward. Despite such a devastating event, one would think Americans so dependent on electric devices, would still have more ingenuity and resources to cope, than say a Third World country such as Vietnam.

On the other hand, when a hurricane hit Louisianna, I was shocked that recovery didn't occur more quickly. It seems some Americans are more resourceful than others. But in a true crisis, will our country survive, if the philosophy is "every man for himself"?

Tex| 7.1.09 @ 8:24PM

Planes that WONT Fall out of the sky are Cesna, Piper, King Airs, Beach 18's, DC-3's. Anything from 727's on up will fall in free flight becouse unlike the little planes that have cable running from the rudder peddals and yoke to the flying surfaces,

the "Heavy" planes have motors moving all 3 axis, plus flaps, spoilerers, and Reverse Thrust, and slats. YES, lightning dosent take out planes for the most part.

So that guy is right. BUT, all new air craft like our cars today dont have cable or a rod to make the carb move. The gas peddel is hooked to a POT, Patenchieomter ( I Know Its Splet Wrong)....

It knows what you want on the peddel and the puter tells the motor what to do. I fly the little planes with cable. I trust cable planes.

Turbines and anything that a computer controls the motor is "Goin-Down"......... WHY, Becouse were not talking about lightning strike. Atom bomb, or "Nuke" is a bit differant.

Its the radiation from the nuke that renders all Electronics "Useless"....ALL ! Newer cars when you step on the gas will do nothing.

Anything with a chip, or computer in it "Is Dead" The pilot can move the r-peddles and yoke all he wants, the POT is dead and cant feel a thing.

Food, Water, Seeds, "Good Wiskie", Guns, Ammo, and Sex, will be the "New Money" of tommrow.

The Canary in the coal mine is no longer need'ed. This time we wont know it till its to late. Things are getting bad, just like the Bible Says.

The end time may be neer'er than we think..........?

Well perhaps..."we men for all our families".

Your elected government has forced us real Americans to begin to accept death in disgrace for our families.
OK, if that be necessary.

I don't think it is necessary.

It is called "deterrence"...ie: "if you bomb America...you have to answer to ME!

Janet Napolitano was the governor of Louisiana when Katrina hit and Ray Nagin was the mayor of New Orleans at the same time.

Janet Napolitano waited till the people of her state died in their hospital beds and "schoolbus" RAY NAGIN let 2000 school busses go under 10 feet of water, USELESS TO ANYONE, while residents of New Orleans had NO transportation out of the city.

SCHOOLBUS RAY NAGIN WAS OVERWHELMINGLY RE-ELECTED AS THE MAYOR OF NEW ORLEANS.....AND JANET NAPOLITANO , YOUR EX-"TOTALLY INCOMPETANT" GOVERNOR WAS APPOINTED TO HEAD THE DEPARTMENT OF HOMELAND SECURITY..............TO PROTECT ALL OF US..........

If you do what I did, same here, start from the top and read everything. Block out the "Mis-Informed", and let the truth sink in.

Its nothing like most think. OH, I forgot to add after the SEX of things that we need The Day After, "Cup-&-String" were going back to the old way to call people.

Said many times by Dar............................"God PLEASE Help Us All" Out !

As already noted, we don't need any EMP, we already have Barry Soetoro. The results will be the same as an EMP strike, and the idiot voters will not know what happened, until it is too late.

And the obama controllers can sit back and watch this happen in slow motion, without absolutely any possiblity of a military strike against them. It's a perfect storm for them.

janranch| 7.2.09 @ 7:01AM

please read the fictional book ONE SECOND AFTER by William Rorstchen. Foreword by Newt Gingrich. This book, while fiction is based on fact and will scare the daylights out of you. We don't have to worry about planes falling out of the sky or driving anything. We have to worry about our FELLOW MAN trying to take our stored food and clean drinking water. After all the farm animals, wild life, and even the family dog are eaten, where do you think this is going. The lucky ones die from cronic illnesses, the unlucky ones are left to fend for themselves and their familys. READ IT!!!

Lzendel| 7.2.09 @ 9:57AM

To all the non-believers, I recommend you Google and then read, "Report of the Commission to asses the threat to the United States from Electromagnetic Pulse (EMP) Attack". The shorter version is Vol.1, 2004 and the longer one is Vol 4., 2008. As for airliners fallen from the sky- The EMP pulse would fry the planes and the grounds radio's in that nanosecond and how do you land some 15,000 airliners that are usually in the air at most times of the day without communications?
At you will learn from the 2008 report, the pulse would "fry" most of the 2000 largest electrical transformers in the country- which this country does not manufacture and it might mean no electricity in this country for years- think long and hard what that would mean to all aspects of your current life. Also remember that the radical Islamists love death more than life- the threat of US retaliation is meaningless.
FYI- the Commission was chartered by Congress in 2001

You are so right, and one of the informed. Im one of the lucky ones with 6 diesese in me from 2 ticks. Lyme is just 1 of 23 that you can get.

It took my entertainment carear away at 39 and put 11 people out of work, Yes im a "Lucky One"

EMP, or anything else is not need'ed to colapse our country. Just the dollar being useless in about 18 mo. will do the trick.

In 3-4 mo. it will be he who has guns & bullets will eat and have water. Stock pileing it only makes it that much eazyer for the guy with the gun.

The only safe way to live will be an 80' houseboat on Gilligans Island. Take only the people you want to die with.

Dont tell a sole, not evan your family. In the great lakes is good becouse you have fresh water. ( If the dog can drink it - "So Can You" )

Here are a few more for the un-convinced people out thAre.

With no electronics vehicles won't run. How do we move necessities without modern transportation? Without electronics, we have no phones, computers, radios, or televisions. How do we communicate? How do we grow food or run our factories without vehicles or electricity? In One Second After, a lack of food and medicine leads to mass death. Society crumbles. Cities turn against the countryside and friends and neighbors turn against each other in a desperate struggle to survive. Criminals take advantage. Forstchen humanizes it by giving a detailed look at how events unfold around Montreat College in North Carolina. He uses convincing detail to make the events real.

One Second After is a masterpiece of distopian literature that ranks with 1984 and Brave New World. More important though than its role in our literature is what we do about the grave threat it portrays. Because, one second after the attack, it'll be too late.

If more people could understand how a EMP works they would be scared to death. The threat is real........................... Im a Ham Radio Operator, holding my Gen. Class Ticket. All Hams know all to well what its gona be like

Its hard to get people to believe the "Un-Believeable" Our Goverment wouldent do that to us...........................................( Would They ) !

Query: this "national energy grid" that the Obamazis keep talking about - wouldn't that pretty much ensure that EMP effects would efficiently propagate throughout the country?

Robin| 7.3.09 @ 8:09AM

I hate to point this out, but the planes that dropped the bombs on Japan did not fall out of the sky due to the EMP from the bombs. Electronics around nuclear bomb tests seem to continue to work. Sounds like something theoretically possible but difficult to actually accomplish.
One bomb big enough to black out the entire US would likely be the end of the game anyway. We would all be dead.

ds80| 7.3.09 @ 2:18PM

I concur with janranch and Tex regarding One Second After. I checked it out of the library after having read the report of the gov'ts EMP Commission. I recommend it ... but prepare to be depressed.

I disagree with Willllburrrrr however. While the current government might twiddle its thumbs trying to figure out how to respond to an EMP strike in a manner that doesn't hurt any precious feelings, the populace would eventually not stand for inaction. We'd respond. Even if it meant overthrowing our own gov't first.

For what is the primary responsibility of a government but to protect its citizens?

Texas Dar| 7.3.09 @ 2:49PM

For what is the primary responsibility of a government but to protect its citizens?

DS80.................That is the way it worked before 1912. But not anymore. Please see the clips I've posted.

Then you will know why its just One Big Show, for our pleasure.

Robin. You have to explode the nuke 10,000' above the earth to get a EMP to take out our side of the planet, or our country.

If that would happen im sure the subs deep down would come up when its safe and fire everything they have.

Who would want to be alive after than anyways....? If they flick the switch over Kansas City, my wife and I with 8 rescued kittys will be on our way up "The Big Steps" ready to shake his hand. PLEASE God Help Us All !

GENMAR8| 7.3.09 @ 4:18PM

TO RCURTIS,
I WILL CONCEDE YOUR CORRECTION ABOUT J. NAPOLITANOS GOVERNORSHIP, BUT YOU MUST REMEMBER ALSO THAT SHE IS NOW RESPONSIBLE FOR THE PROTECTION OF ALL AMERICANS, AS DIRECTOR OF HOMELAND SECURITY,,,MY GOD, WHAT WAS IN OBAMA'S MIND??....SHE IS INCOMPETENT AND UNWILLING TO PROTECT AMERICANS IN THEIR BED, IN THEIR PLACE OF WORK, IN THEIR TIME OF RECREATION, WHEN IT COMES TO PROTECTION OF OUR BORDERS, WHICH IS MANDATED BY OUR CONSTITUTION.

SOME HOW SHE DOES NOT INSTILL ANY CONFIDENCE IN ME....I THINK SHE IS A STOOGE OF THE OBAMA ADMIN. AND NOTHING MORE................INCOMPETENT TO THE POINT OF UTTER STUPIDITY.

SHE'S NOT EVEN A PRETTY FACE, JUST A STOOGE FOR OBAMA.

lzendel| 7.3.09 @ 4:38PM

Robin-
The planes that dropped the bombs on Japan did not have micro electronic circuits. Many of today's commercial airliners have so-called glass cockpits-almost everything electronic. No these planes would not fall out of the sky but without radios, transponders, glide slope indicators, GPS indicators, weather radars, etc, and the pilots without VFR maps in their brief cases, just how would they find their way to where they could land? and all without colliding with another plane. Most daylight hours there are about 15,000 commercial planes aloft over the US.. if only 3% crashed from failure to successfully and safely land that's 450 crashes. 10% is 1500 crashes!
The bomb required to do all this is very small. It is detonated 300-400 miles up via a missile.
No blast or radiation damage or even fallout at ground level but the electromagnetic pulse the bomb generates fries all microelectronic circuit boards and all electric transformers.
Instead of blindly saying there is no such danger, look up my prior post and Google the Commission report(s). You might also ask yourself why there are 2 more reports by the Commission that are classified?
After you read one or both of the reports then consider that your President believes he can TALK Iran out of building a nuclear bomb !

Polyester Mather | 7.3.09 @ 10:05PM

HH is to be congratulated for a response of greater technical merit that the article preceding it. Mr Joshpe seems to have mastered everything Harvard Law has to teach concerning pulse electromagnetics, and not one iota of what's on offer next door in the School Of Engineering.
Perhaps he should drop in. What North Korea can presently toss poses about as much of an "existential threat " to America as the Honduran Air Force does to India.

Those seeking a more sober account of the realities of EMP technologies had best consult the journals of the IEEE.

If we still had the capability to do so....we would immediately disable " all of our known enemies" with the same EMP weapon...followed by something a little closer to the ground for some of them if you get my drift.

Then maybe the American spirit and can do attitude would rebuild this nation and leadership.

In the near term most of the takers would be wiped out pretty quickly by the better prepared patriots......God Bless America Again!
