I usually write here weekly, sometimes slipping in a second one when no one is watching. Yet, my regular weekly article last appeared here on Jan. 13, and I was preparing my next one for the occasion of the inauguration the following week on Jan. 20. Alas, several developments interceded. Thanks to the grace of G-d, all was well and is well. I needed time finally to complete writing and upgrading my commentary on half the Torah, and half the Chumash (so far, the latter part of Genesis, all of Exodus and Leviticus, and the first part of Numbers). I still have two-thirds of Genesis, two-thirds of Numbers, and all of Deuteronomy to treat. So there was that.
Now to number 47. Here, I discuss these past six weeks. That allows me the rare opportunity to write with a month’s perspective that is different from when I am analyzing the day’s breaking news. When you think about it, there is great significance to the passage of time. The passage of time. And there is such great significance to the passage of time when we think about a day in the life of our nation. (I like my word salads with buttermilk ranch.)
First, finally, Donald Trump actually entered the Oval Office again. The timing is more opportune now than in 2020. America was immersed in a national tire fire then. Now, America has seen the full implications and consequences of the Obama-Biden-Pelosi-Harris-Ocasio woke agenda. Americans now are briefly ready to think for themselves and disregard the pundits who led them to catastrophe. It’s Miller Time! (Stephen Miller.) Americans do not want DEI. They want to have their own fair chance to get jobs and promotions and for their kids to get into college, the same rules as the NBA and NFL use to hire their employees — merit. Americans have stopped being shamed into silence by Virtue Signalers and Cancel Police. They don’t want men competing in women’s pole vaulting, volleyball, swimming, and other sports. They know there are only two genders, and they are terrified that some elementary school will convince their sons to want to cut off their penises and their daughters their areolas. They don’t want to pay for transgender operas in Colombia (“The Barbra of Seville”?), transgender comic books in Peru (“The Adventures of Superthey”?), DEI musical in Ireland, or sex changes and LGBTQ activism in Guatemala. They don’t want to race to an emergency room in mortal peril and wait six hours for a triage nurse to let them ahead of kids of illegal aliens with sniffles, coughs, and other common cold symptoms because Illegals in all the large cities have been taught the “emergency room” loophole for free medical care. America has changed. Those who were lied to by CNN and MSNBC have figured it out. They believed every word — from Malaysian airliner 370 to the assurance that Hillary only destroyed emails about a wedding dress and yoga; from the presentation of Michael Avenatti as a viable presidential contender to the personal eyewitness guarantees that Joe Biden was the sharpest knife in the drawer. America believed, saw, and changed. America began to realize that the Trump they did not know in 2015 but might be a Nazi dictator with no idea how to run a country actually turned out to be the straightest shooter on the range, with the best results and always acceded to court rulings. Instead of adopting a “Woke” ideology, Americans woke up. Once they looked for themselves, they came to the terrifying realization that our great culture and society is at five minutes to midnight and just about lost. Horrifyingly, it is maybe too late and it is even scarier that almost no one is able to fix it. Even those with the right ideas, just are not strong enough. They rose in politics by being cautious and appealing to diverse electorates. America now needed not an orator like Daniel Webster but a Jason Voorhees with a machete for the budget, not a great compromiser like Henry Clay but a Leatherface with a chainsaw.
The only man who perhaps can cure the deep rot in the American school system. Or the FBI deep state. None of us knew how deep the Swamp was in 2016 when it was a slogan. In the early Obama days, conservatives like Sean Hannity repeatedly assured us that the corruption was only in the upper echelon. But the Trump years exposed how deep it truly is infested. The FBI deep state and corruption of the whole justice system shocked all of us when it became exposed this past Obama–Biden decade. No charges were brought against Hillary Clinton (emails about yoga and the wedding), Joe Biden (too old to prosecute), Hunter (laptop was Soviet conspiracy), the plea bargain of Hunter (judge rejected it because it was so corrupt), the conviction of Hunter (pardoned by Dad). Lawfare against Trump is reflected in the insane 34-count convictions that all will be overturned when they reach higher appellate courts without agendas. A sleazy state prosecutor who hires her married boyfriend as co-counsel. Everyone grew to realize the system was corrupt, but no one could fix it. Jeff Sessions, a state attorney-general and U.S. Senator, was consumed by the Swamp; it drowned him. Bill Barr, even more capable, could not counter it. Only a sledgehammer — Trump. The Department of State. Obama-Biden-Kerry types hire thousands of woke infiltrators to jobs so that, when Obama-Biden-Kerry leave office, their people are inside to gum up the works and defy the foreign policy set by the new president. Only one force on earth — a Category 9 hurricane — can take it on: Trump. And even he needs a Force of Nature at his side, a man who might be described in the immortal words of the Honorable Kanye West as “Def Con 3.”
And so on.
A curiosity remains: Why is this term’s “Resistance” different from last time, even not daring to call themselves that? A few thoughts:
- Zuckerberg at Meta, Bezos, that whole crowd. They are afraid to leave Musk with the inside track on technology, shutting them out, while the new Department of Justice does to Zuckerberg and Bezos what Obama-Biden-Garland did to Trump. Moreover, Bezos wants into the space program, and he fears Trump will lock him out. So this time social media is open to and even nice to Trump, while the Washington Post and L.A. Times took a pass on endorsing a presidential candidate
- CNN and MSNBC did very well off Trump in 2016-2020 because they brainwashed their dupes into believing Trump is a Nazi, and America never had it worse than under him. Then came Biden and Harris. The viewers of CNN and MSNBC saw eggs cost more than their cars, their boys telling them they want to cut off their penises, Harris promising to fund their “gender-affirming” care, and their gas costing them twice what it had. That is what convinced them that, if they watched 2 hours a night of CNN/MSNBC from 2016-2024 — 14 hours per week, 50 weeks per year, eight years — they had wasted 5,600 hours of their waking lives. Allowing for eight hours of nightly sleep, one-hour commuting, and one-hour eating, leaving 14 waking hours per 24-hour day, they had wasted 400 days of their lives — 13 months — on Joy Reid, Jim Acosta, Don Lemon, and Brian Stelter. - Often overlooked: Nancy Pelosi gave up the gavel. She uniquely is blessed with a witch’s magical powers to stab in the back repeatedly and kill by a thousand cuts. Always something new and destructive: one impeachment over a valid phone call to some guy named Zelensky, then another impeachment the next year. Both were destined to fail but inserted cuts and slices, tied up governance, and aimed at ruining a man’s authority. Tearing up the SOTU speech on live TV just when reporters initially were complimenting it as Trump’s finest. The evil genius of the Wicked Witch of the West. The “January 6 Commission” media production. Again, it never was going to accomplish anything (except, ironically, to destroy Liz Cheney’s career and perhaps thereby also help sink Harris, who scared woke Democrats by campaigning with her). Pelosi’s departure alone accounts for so much of the changed tone, but she also made a consequential mistake when she cast the spell to bypass a post-Biden shortened primary campaign and instead to coronate her fellow Californian DEI as the standard bearer.
- No “Women’s March” this time. The Supreme Court’s Dobbs v. Jackson ruling took the steam out of them. Brett Kavanaugh’s broad acceptance after four years demoralized them. Instead of overturning or packing the Court, we got Amy Coney Barrett, and they got Ketanji. The #MeToo effort ended up taking down their own leftist powerhouses: Al Franken, Harvey Weinstein, Mark Halperin, Charlie Rose, Matt Lauer, and Tavis Smiley. Even a California Democrat state assemblywoman has been mired in scandal.
- The Left Wing’s Legion of Super Heroes fizzled. Their hopes on “The Insider,” Michael Cohen — pfft. The anticipation of Stormy Daniels on the stand — pfft. Her lawyer, Michael Avenatti — like Cohen, a beneficiary of federal housing.
- Musk. It is impossible to underestimate his impact in the culture change from 2016. Even people who hate him like him. He is weird and goofy, partly a genius and partly a Disneyland character. He broke the Democrats’ lock on Silicon Valley and on social media, impelling neighbors to transition to Trump or, at least, cool their TDS rhetoric. Musk imparts enormous legitimacy to 2024 Trump that lacked in 2016. And his DOGE is just eyeball-popping.
- Biden’s own corruption, incompetence, and lifetime of lies also Made Trump Great Again. You cannot build a culture of outrage over Trump pardoning 1,500 “January 6ers” after Biden pardoned and commuted 4,245 convicted felons, many on Death Row. After Biden pardoned Hunter (after promising he would not — a promise no one ever believed), Trump has a green light to pardon anyone. After Biden let ten million illegal aliens in, and Greg Abbott, and then Ron DeSantis, geniusly started shipping them to blue states, the problem of “Illegals” became a universal catastrophe that everyone silently wanted reversed. Therefore, what the media depicted as “racist” in 2016 — “They are not sending us their best” — now is almost universally acknowledged by the American majority. Trump even won the popular vote this time, negating their rueful “electoral college” rants.
When Biden defied the Supreme Court, by forgiving student loans that the Court ruled he was forbidden to write off, he cleared the way for Trump to wrestle with the Court. By Biden signing 162 Executive Orders, he opened the door for Trump. By Biden doddering even on his best days, he removed the 25th Amendment from the anti-Trump arsenal. With Biden allocating $7.5 billion to building EV chargers, then building only 8, he gifted Trump with powerful imagery to expose the “Green New Deal” fraud. After the botched Afghanistan withdrawal, Biden–Harris legitimized Trump firing any military official, no matter how many stars he has.
Trump and America emerged better off with him coming back in 2024 rather than 2020. Trump could not gain momentum then because he had the wrong team: Rex Tillerson, Jeff Sessions, Christopher Wray, and all. He devoted four years to strategizing, and the results are clear. He now has bulldozers loyal to him and able to advance his agenda. He controls the room dramatically better in press conferences; no shout-downs with Jim Acosta types. And by flooding the zone from Day One, he has left the Democrats with political atrial fibrillation, the political atria and ventricles unable to beat in rhythm.
It’s a great thing.
