I’ll say this for Mike Pence. He was the voice of reason tonight after a crowd in Reno, Nevada saw fit to boo a mother whose son is currently serving in the U.S. Air Force when she questioned Pence about Trump’s personal attacks against the Khan family whose son died heroically in Iraq in 2004. The Khans have taken Trump to task for his proposed Muslim immigration and travel policy and anti-Muslim rhetoric.
Pence began by defending the woman’s right to freedom of speech and thanking her son for his service and did the same for the Khans reminding the crowd of what Captain Khan to save his fellow soldiers. He also made the case for Trump’s devotion to the armed forces and to veterans. He calmed a situation that could have got out of hand.
Yet I cannot help but wonder how Trump would have handled that situation. Given his gracelessness towards the Khans how could we expect him to have treated this woman any better? Trump has asked security to remove people from his rallies in the past. How can we be sure he wouldn’t have said, “Get her the hell outta here?”
