Obama’s recent betrayal of Israel helps explain a minor diplomatic incident early in his administration, in which the U.S. opposed Canada’s appointment to a seat on the Security Council.
Canada, at the time, was governed by Stephen Harper’s Conservatives, and would have voted against the recent Security Council resolution on Israel, which America covertly sponsored and then covered its tracks with an abstention.
In a speech before the Knesset, Harper said that Canada would stand with Israel “through fire and water.” He wouldn’t have gone along with Obama, as New Zealand did, and doubtless as Justin Trudeau would have done.
