The Wall Street Journal published an article this week detailing President Joe Biden’s lack of presence and mental capacity in closed-door meetings in recent months. According to the report, congressional leaders struggle to decipher Biden’s soft-spoken utterances in meetings and are growing concerned with Biden’s uneven performance.

House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) expressed concern over Biden’s inability to recall details of own his policy in February. In addition, in a meeting discussing funds to Ukraine, participants found it odd that Biden started reading notes about the already agreed-upon notion that sending aid to the country was needed. Biden was hard to hear and was observed closing his eyes for prolonged periods, according to attendees.
Compared to his predecessors, Americans do not get to witness Biden as much in unscripted moments, and Biden has had few meetings with lawmakers throughout his term. In 2020, Biden held over three dozen meetings with lawmakers. In his third year, Biden has only met with lawmakers a dozen times.
Senior White House officials and administrators reemphasized Biden’s strengths and sharp mind to the Wall Street Journal. Biden’s team asserted that his doctors found him fit and without the need for a cognitive test.
Former President Donald Trump’s mental acuity was not left out in the Wall Street Journal’s coverage, as the paper noted Trump’s flub in mixing up Nikki Haley and Nancy Pelosi. Trump also closed his eyes for extended periods during his criminal trial in New York in May. However, a Wall Street Journal survey in seven battleground states reveals that more voters see Trump as physically and mentally suited for the presidency than Biden.
