Rep. Elijah Cummings, the ranking Democrat on the House Oversight and Reform Committee, decided the IRS scandal was over and done after agency employee John Shafer said he sent Tea Party applications to a single IRS unit.
Shafer may have only sent them to a single unit, but the targeting was much more widespread than that.
Documents compiled by the American Center for Law and Justice as part of their lawsuit—which has now grown to 41 conservative group targeted by the IRS—show that 12 separate IRS units were responsible for the targeting, including the the Tax Exempt and Government Entities Division in Washington.
Despite claims by IRS officials that the targeting occurred only in the agency’s Cincinnati office, the ACLJ compiled letters proving that IRS offices in Washington, D.C. and the California cities of El Monte and Laguna Niguel also targeted conservatives. The Daily Caller has also reported that the agency’s Baltimore and Chicago offices engaged in the improper targeting.
Remember that old chestnut that this was all the fault of a few rogue employees in Cinicinnati? Another employee’s testimony had already shown that excuse to be false, but these documents provide hard proof that this was a systematic effort on the part of the IRS and cannot be blamed on a few frontline employees.
