‘Blame Yourself’

by

Herman Cain weighs in on Occupy Wall Street:

“Don’t blame Wall Street. Don’t blame the big banks. If you don’t have a job and you’re not rich, blame yourself.”

Although I appreciate hippie-bashing as much as the next guy, I don’t think that Cain intended to demean the OWS protesters. His comments certainly have been taken as though they were antagonistic (Rod Dreher: “His is a pure example of the Republican Id”), but in context it sounds more as though they were intended as personal advice. He proceeds to talk about his own experience overcoming poverty: “I was blessed to have had parents that didn’t teach me to be jealous of anybody, and didn’t teach me to be envious of somebody. It is not a person’s fault if they succeeded, it is a person’s fault if they failed.” Sounds like he’s just offering helpful advice.
