An estimated 40 pro-immigration reform activists were arrested for blocking the road during a sit-in protest that occurred in front of the Cannon office building on Independence Avenue today, after four warnings from the police. Politico reports that those arrested were top leaders from pro-reform organizations such as the AFL-CIO, the Campaign for Community Change, the Service Employees International Union, Communications Workers of America, and the United Farm Workers.
Around 200 people cheered from the sideline with signs calling out the GOP for their slow pace on addressing immigration reform. Democratic Reps. Luis Gutierrez, Jan Schakowsky, and Raul Grijalva attended before the sit-ins, offering support to the protestors.
