Former Philadelphia abortionist Kermit Gosnell, who was convicted on three counts of first-degree murder on Monday, avoided the death penalty by agreeing to forgo an appeal and serve two life sentences with no chance for parole.
NBC Philadelphia is reporting that Gosnell still faces sentencing Wednesday for his other convictions:
Gosnell was found guilty of first-degree murder on Monday in the deaths of three babies. He was also found guilty of involuntary manslaughter in the death of former patient Karnamaya Mongar and of more than 200 counts of abortion law violations.
Death penalty appeals can be incredibly expensive, and the heightened media attention on the later parts of the trial mean this trial already cost more than enough. Gosnell can sit in prison for the rest of his life, remembering his appaling crimes that got him there and, if he can fathom any sense of human dignity, maybe feel some actual guilt about them.
