A Tale of Two Huffington Post Headlines

by

Check out this headline from The Huffington Post regarding the murder of British Labour MP Jo Cox:

British Lawmaker’s Killing Highlights Danger of Far-Right Nationalism

Now given what happened in Orlando a week ago, one might think The Huffington Post would have put forth a headline like this:

The Killing of 49 at Orlando LGBT Nightclub Highlights Danger of Radical Islam

Instead, we get a headline such as this one:

Report: Investigators Suspect Orlando Attack Had Little Or Nothing To Do With ISIS

If you click this link, it brings you to a NPR report which reads “Investigators Say Orlando Shooter Showed Few Warning Signs of Radicalization”. Although slightly less loaded, it is still quite misleading. Aside from pledging allegiance to ISIS (as the San Bernardino killers did), he cheered the 9/11 attacks, claimed he was Osama bin Laden’s nephew and was twice investigated by the FBI for ties to Islamic terror.

But facts seldom get in the way of an agenda.

The Huffington Post, like many mainstream media outlets, is minimizing the dangers of radical Islam in the Orlando attack while maximizing the dangers of far-right nationalism.

I certainly don’t wish to minimize what happened in Britain a couple of days ago. MPs are usually not murdered in broad daylight by people with a political agenda.

Yet when British soldier Lee Rigby was beheaded in broad daylight by two Muslim terrorists there was no headline from The Huffington Post which read “Beheading of British Soldier Highlights Danger of Radical Islam”. Instead, we were treated to this headline:

Anti-Islam Protests Flare Following London Attack

And this one as well:

Alleged London Attacker British Citizen of Nigerian Origin

To read these two headlines one would not know that a British soldier had been beheaded by two Muslims, one of whom bragged about it on camera.

If The Huffington Post wishes to highlight the danger of far-right nationalism that it is prerogative. But to do so when actively denying there is a greater danger of radical Islam is an insult not only to our intelligence, but to those who have died at the hands of jihadists in Islam’s name.
