Israel’s tactical victory in Operation Pillar of Defense is fairly straightforward: Hamas’s military infrastructure is significantly degraded, several important leaders of Hamas (as well as Palestinian Islamic Jihad) have been killed, and the Iron Dome missile defense system has proven extremely effective. If the ceasefire announced today in Cairo holds, it’s also a major strategic victory for both Israeli and American interests.

Read Lee Smith’s excellent analysis of the regional implications; written before the ceasefire announcement, it details how successful US diplomacy could force Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi into the role of containing rather than supporting Hamas while simultaneously sending a strong message to Iran about Israel’s ability to act unilaterally with US support. While things could fall apart, the announcement of a ceasefire that is basically on Israeli terms — though the deal may include some easing of the blockade of Gaza, it apparently does not include lifting the blockade as Hamas had been demanding — suggests that this diplomatic success has come to pass.

UPDATE: News from Israel at the moment — 3:00 pm EST, 10:00 pm in Israel — is that despite the announcement of a ceasefire beginning at 9:00 pm, the fire hasn’t actually ceased. Take the above analysis as contingent on that happening, obviously.

However we win is acceptable. Maybe the Palestinians will decide that voting for a group of child murdering killers isn't a good plan, but I doubt it.

Maybe if Zionist Jews hadn't stolen the land from Palestinians (both Christian and Muslim) and forced scores from their homes maybe the Palestinians wouldn't support groups like Hamas or the P.L.O..It's just a thought.

If it wasn't for English occupation and the settlement of Protestants in the North of Ireland there would be no problems there either.

The Israeli thieves and murderers will never win. The ratio of women and children killed is about 100 Palistinians to every Israeli. Still Hamas is in charge of Gaza and Israel looks like a monster to most of the world. That is why the Israeli's are targeting journalists in Gaza. They don't want the truth to come out. Hamas was funded by the Mossad as a way to weaken the secular Palistinian groups. How did that work ou?. Israel could of had peace for decades if the were not so greedy and racist. 62 years of this nonsense is enough. How long are going to keep funding Israel and her wars for Apartheid? Let there be peace. Shalom.

Jack
Why don't you move to Gaza and join your soulmates in Hamas? We at Am Spec will pay for the one way ticket.

funny how the Leftist Hamasapologists never mention THIS ratio: for every beaten and tortured IDF member released by the Fakestinians, hundreds of well-fed and cared-for Fakestinian terrorists are released by Israel...and funny how they never mention that the ME countries that wail the loudest about the poor pitiful Fakestinians don't want them in THEIR counties, either...

Wow Jack, your really a sickphuger aren't you? Funny how that ailment only seems to strike the feeble minded and weak willed looking for a handout instead of a hand up.

"Zionist Jews"??? When did they change their name?
Oh well with your lack of knowledge about the history of Israel so obvious; you probably wouldnt know the answer.
I wonder if yours is a recessive gene that causes the imballance most libs suffer from. Hopefully you libs will go the way of the dinasaur, with whom your intelligence is slightly below..
Does momma come down in the basement and nudge you so you remember to breath; or can you do that all on your own?

Jack, your anti-Semitism will not win on this one. This time the Jews will not go quietly and Jack and Dimitri, I know you are both slow learners etc, but ask yourself what would happen to Israel if they disarmed and what would happen to the "Palestinians" if they disarmed?

Dimitri, they were not forced from their homes and Arabs have same rights if they are Israeli citizens as Israelis. They are in these phoney refugee camps to be used as a sword against Israel.

". . . it's also a major strategic victory for both Israeli and American interests."

Thanks John. Perhaps you'd now care to tell me what "American" interests are. With Obama's re-election, I really don't know anymore.

Survival Paul; I believe the very best we can hope for is survival; and then to pray HE goes away in four years so we do not have to take advantage of our 2nd Amendment.
