The Spectacle Blog

In keeping with my pledge (below) on coverage of the intraparty campaign, I pass this on without comment. Rick Santorum just held a phone press briefing with national reporters, but took no questions. Here, to the best of my ability to transcribe, are highlights of what he said:

“[I will keep talking about] the most important issue out there which is freedom. The signature thing out there on this front is Obamacare…. Governor Romney throughout the course of his governorship and afterwards was an advocate for the individual mandate …. What you have with Governor Romney is someone who simply is not the genuine article. People… just don’t trust Mitt Romney to not do what is the fashionable thing at the moment …. [examples given: cap and trade; Obamacare mandate, several others].

[My record is different. I and now-Gov. John Kasich introduced Medical Savings Accounts back in the early 1990s, a free-market,] bottom up approach. We did this. It’s a sharp contrast to someone who jumps at the latest fad… but who doesn’t do what’s necessary to keep this government limited and keep our people free. There is one conserative you can trust who is someone who won’t go with the popular flow but who stands for limited government …..
[Romney wasn’t just wrong;] he mislad the public about what his position was. He was in fact anadvocate for something he said he wasn’t.”

Santorum also urged people to go back and look at or read a speech he gave in Rochester, MN, outlining the 15 different ways that Romneycare and Obamacare were “identical,” which “makes Governor Romney uniquely unqualified to take on this president on the most important issue of this election.”

(NOTE from Quin: Here was my pledge: I will no longer write any formal columns about the GOP intra-party presidential contest, nor will I blog about it except to report breaking news developments in a sort of FYI format without my own comments — with the exception of doing straight news-type reports if any candidate comes through my neck of the woods on the Gulf Coast, as several are expected to do before the March 13 primaries in Alabama and Mississippi. [If I make any other exceptions, I will explain WHY I am making such an exception.])

Again, Santorum took no questions, citing another interview for which he was scheduled….

Oldefarte| 3.5.12 @ 2:31PM

He should criticize Obama, not Romney!!!!

Oldefarte| 3.5.12 @ 2:29PM

Santorum typically talks about and criticizes Romney instead of Obama [and that is part of his numerous problems]!!!!!!!!!

JJ| 3.5.12 @ 6:36PM

And the reverse is not true. Funny how after Romney uses his cash to carpet bomb Newt then Santorum, we are hearing how they should leave Romney alone. Romney is your typical establishment Republican. One that we have grown so weary of.

Oldefarte| 3.6.12 @ 11:09AM

I urge you/everyone here to read Newt's latest comments being reported today. HE'S MOSTLY TALKING ABOUT OBAMA, and not the other Republican competing candidates. That is, or should be, the prime issue. IT'S THE DEMOCRATS [AND THE ECONOMY] ......My personal preference would be a Newt nomination victory, BUT I'll vote for Romney [or any other Republican] in November over the alternative!!!!!!

Dai Alanye | 3.5.12 @ 2:42PM

Here's the problem in Ohio. I've received approximately two dozen robocalls from Romney drudges, almost all distorting Santorum's record. Mitt, Ann, and a couple of other robots made positive calls. All were recorded.

I've received three robocalls for Rick, two entirely positive. One excellent anti-Romney call came through from the Red, White & Blue PAC.

I've made about forty personal calls so far, leaving messages in more than half. Of the real live answerers, four have been Dems or merely obnoxious, and I figure I've convinced at least three folks, one of whom promised to tell all her compagni.

As for Quin's pledge, I recommend he immediately jump off the water wagon, and to hell with Carrie Nation. And MittRomney.

Maybe Arlen Specter Could Call For Ricky Specter-Santorum And Johnny McCain Could Call For Mittens McCain-Romney And All The RINO-CINO's Would Be Happy.

And maybe Ron Paul can admit that he has an alliance with Romney.

Clint| 3.5.12 @ 7:06PM

Do Your Homework Smear Bund Buffoon.

" Ron Paul on Tuesday shot down the idea he’s in cahoots with Mitt Romney, saying Rick Santorum is a conspiracy theory “addict” who “dreamt that up.”

Paul told CNN’s Wolf Blitzer there is no truth to the idea that he is in a secret alliance with the Romney campaign. After Blitzer asked if the rumors were true that he was protecting Romney in order to see his son Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) on the ticket, Paul laughed off the suggestion and said it “hasn’t crossed my mind.”
“Some people are much more into conspiracies than others. If Santorum is an addict on conspiracies, I guess he’s going to have to keep talking that way,” Paul said.

Paul slammed Santorum’s focus on the supposed strategic alliance, saying the former Pennsylvania senator “pulled that out of the air.”

“If that’s all he has to talk about, that means he doesn’t have much of a platform to talk about. I would think we’re supposed to be talking about the issue,” Paul said. “But to construct something like that, I mean, he just pulled that out of the air because there’s no truth to it. But if he wants to spend his energy doing that, I just — you can’t do anything about it. But he dreamt that up.”

I hope no one wastes a vote on RonPaul, America's least effective Congressman. Has he EVER influenced, for good or ill, an important piece of legislation? No, he has not.

RonPaul is all talk, no action. His is a pathetic record. All these years of drawing a salary and perks with hardly a single thing to show for it.

Milton Freidman was a great man. Ron Paul isn't, Clint. We are trying to save you from yourself, and all you do is call everbody names. You call everbody a Buffoon, but you are the one that everybody knows is the real Buffoon.

You follow around a guy who will never yield any real results for you, much like a drunk homeless beggar looking for a twenty dollar bill in the dumpster....
Like a hot air balloon that never lands...
Like a doofus who keeps thinking he'll make it into the cool crowd...
You'll never make a difference to any of us if you stay out there in wing wang ville with your Pied Piper....

Think about it Clint...you whank... If you could get a third of the democrats to go off into la la land with Ralph Nader and support him all the time...would you do it? Of course you would...because it splits the energy. That is what phony Ron Paul is doing....

See, even if you are misguided probably belong in the funny farm...we really could use your energy and zeal, instead of you just constantly publishing your gas in a windstorm pap...playing the role of the useful idiot.

You are better than this Clint...now come on over and join us....

Dear Leader Barack heartily thanks you.

Tom| 3.6.12 @ 6:14PM

Yes, Barack Hussein Obama should ALWAYS be grateful to Mitt Romney for providing the model upon which to build Obamacare; including the Individual Mandate.

Tom| 3.5.12 @ 4:26PM

I'll lose with Santorum before I "win" with Romney. At least I'll be able to keep a clear conscience with my personal integrity intact, which many people who decided to sell their souls for the sake of political expediencey will NOT be able to say.

Oldefarte| 3.5.12 @ 4:39PM

Your comment is the very definition of STUPIDITY!!!!!!!!!!

Oldefarte| 3.5.12 @ 4:42PM

Also, your STUPIDITY will possibly result in our collective/combined LOSS resulting from a re-election of Obama [so in effect you're giving a MIDDLE FINGERED SALUTE to each and every conservative and moderate historical taxpayer that is desirous of defeating him in November]. Thanks and GTH!!!!!!!!!!

Tom| 3.5.12 @ 5:00PM

Mitt Romney doesn't have a thing to offer to working class people with conservative religious and social values. His entire campaign has been one big middle finger in our direction. So go cry me a river, you Romneyite refuse pile.

If GOP candidates to not embrace my values, then I will NOT vote for them. PERIOD. And I really don't care if this means that a bunch of GOP hacks are jobless on January 21, 2013.

Oldefarte| 3.6.12 @ 11:24AM

DA, the only 'jobless' will be the now 15% and next year increasing to 25% unemployeds resulting from Obama's socialism governmental policies that are allowed to continue and increase due to your STUPIDITY of refusing to vote for the Republican nominee [if that becomes Romney]. You and people like you are the ones who allowed OBAMA to become elected in 2008 by again your STUPIDITY. No real conservative prefers Romney [certainly not myself who favors Newt], but it is essential that A REPUBLICAN be nominated and elected. Ya yankee boy Rickster is nothing but a labor union HACK DISGUISED AS A CONSERVATIVE FOR POLITICAL PURPOSES. his whining, moaning and groaning constantly about the Catholic Church, morality and religious issues is indeed noble BUT IT IS NOT USEFUL OR HELPFUL TOWARD WINNING IN NOVEMBER. In fact it is DESTRUCTIVE OF SAME SINCE THE DEMOCRATS HAVE LURED REPUBLICANS INTO THIS RELIGIOUS/MORALITY BOXED CANYON ISSUE AND WILL EAT REPUBLICANS ALIVE IN NOVEMBER OVER SAME [AND OBAMA WILL WIN].!!!!!!!!!!

Tom| 3.6.12 @ 6:48PM

I’ll break up the Stupid Old Fool’s rant, and reply to piece by piece.

The Stupid Old Fool said;
“the only 'jobless' will be the now 15% and next year increasing to 25% unemployeds resulting from Obama's socialism governmental policies that are allowed to continue and increase due to your STUPIDITY of refusing to vote for the Republican nominee [if that becomes Romney]…..

I say:
And your PROOF that the same will not occur under Romney is….?????????

The Stupid Old Fool said;
“You and people like you are the ones who allowed OBAMA to become elected in 2008 by again your STUPIDITY…”

I say;
I won’t speak for anyone else, but the ONLY reason I voted for McCain in 2008 is because he named Sarah Plain as his VP. And we see how the GOP establishment has treated her ever since. NEVER again. The same GOP hacks who today are saying how “electable” Romney is in 2012 did the same for McCain in 2008.

The Stupid Old Fool said;
“No real conservative prefers Romney [certainly not myself who favors Newt],”

I say;
That strange, because there are certainly LOTs of “conservatives” out there doing everything they can to get this guy the nomination.

The Stupid Old Fool said;
“but it is essential that A REPUBLICAN be nominated and elected.”

I say;
Why? On what substantial issue is there any really difference between Romney and Obama. And why is someone preferable just because they have the R after their name.

The Stupid Old Fool said;
“Ya yankee boy Rickster is nothing but a labor union HACK DISGUISED AS A CONSERVATIVE FOR POLITICAL PURPOSES…”

I say:
That is an outright lie. At the end of 2006, his last year in office, Santorum had a 13 percent lifetime rating from the AFL-CIO. That was about even, in labor's view, with most of the Republican caucus.

The Stupid Old Fool said;
“his whining, moaning and groaning constantly about the Catholic Church, morality and religious issues is indeed noble.”

I say;
Am not Catholic. This country needs MUCH more “whining, moaning and groaning” about a million and a half murdered babies and every expression of sexual perversion rammed down out throats.

The Stupid Old Fool said;

“BUT IT IS NOT USEFUL OR HELPFUL TOWARD WINNING IN NOVEMBER. In fact it is DESTRUCTIVE OF SAME SINCE THE DEMOCRATS HAVE LURED REPUBLICANS INTO THIS RELIGIOUS/MORALITY BOXED CANYON ISSUE AND WILL EAT REPUBLICANS ALIVE IN NOVEMBER OVER SAME.”

I say;

GARBAGE!!! Name me one national election that the Republican Party lost because of social issues. You won’t, because you can’t, because THAT NEVER HAPPENED!!!! It is a LIE that social conservatives cost Republicans elections. Those issues matter to MILLIONS of people in this country. Now listen to me carefully; If the Republican Party does not run on conservative social issues, it has absolutely no chance of winning a national election. Now or ever. The Republican Party NEEDS us social conservatives, and if it doesn’t produce candidates that embrace our values, we will NOT support their candidates.

The Stupid Old Fool said;

“AND OBAMA WILL WIN].!!!!!!!!!!”

And I say;

WHY should I prefer Romney over Obama?

jstwndring| 3.5.12 @ 11:27PM

Obama/Romney.

Tomato/tomahtoe.

Obamneycare is here to stay with the establishment candidate of either party getting elected. What will we have "won" with Mitt? Republican credit for the disaster that is socialized medicine. I guess we really are all socialists now.

Tom| 3.5.12 @ 4:52PM

I really couldn't care less what an IDIOT like you has to say. ANYONE who supports Mitt Romeny is an unprincipled scumbag who has nothing but my personal contempt.

JJ| 3.5.12 @ 6:39PM

The stupidity comes from the GOP establishment is pushing Romney, a sure loser on us, then tells the rest of us to lump it.

Oldefarte| 3.6.12 @ 11:36AM

No wrong, the stupidity comes from the I'M A ULTRA CONSERVATIVE WHOL'LL ONLY VOTE FOR SUPER MORALIST SANTORUMS [and who refuse to support a Romney nomination IF HE IS EVENTUTUALLY SELECTED] who will cause Obama to be re-elected [and therefore WE ALL WILL LOSE]. That is the STUPIDITY involved here!!!!!!!

Tom| 3.6.12 @ 6:50PM

The REAL stupidity comes from right-wing secularists such as the Stupid Old Fool.

And again, you have failed to produce any legitimate quality of Romeny's that I should prefer him over Obama.

Tom| 3.5.12 @ 4:56PM

The WORST thing that could happenn to this country and conservatives in particular is to have that left-wing Mormon cultist win in November. I will NOT support him now; I will NOT support him in November, I will NEVER support him. and if you don't like it, then that is YOUR problem, not mine.

JJ| 3.5.12 @ 6:41PM

What the GOP fails to realize that much of his base are old blue collar Democrats. We love the country and believe in individual responsibility. That does not mean we love those born rich and consider themselves elite.
We see through Romney because he is not one of us. He will win by tearing down all his opponents. But his GOP establishment will turn around and be nice to Obama. Because its Obama who they envy.

Tom| 3.5.12 @ 7:15PM

Yes, exactly. And that's why Santorum is the most electable GOP candidate. He has been able to reach out to working class people ever since his first election in 1990 when he won a Congressional election in the Pittsburgh suburbs. That was a terrible year for the GOP due to Bush Sr. breaking his "no new taxes" pledge. Santorum was the ONLY Republican candidate to unseat a sitting Democratic congressman, a seven-termer no less.

He lost in 2006 which was a terrible year for Republicans as well to the son and namsake of a very popular former Pennsylvania governor who was also regarded as a hero to many in the pro-life movement.

The dynamixa in 2012 are completely different than they were in 2006. Pennsylvania is a rather unique state politically. It has often been described as Philadelphia in the east, Pittsburgh in the west, and Alabama in the middle. The trick to success is to capture two of those regions.

Santorum's social conservatism plays very well in the center of the state; as it does in many places around the Pittsburgh area. And I simply refuse to believe that the good people of Western Pennsylvania will turn on one of their own in order to support Obama in a Presidential election. If Santorums wins the nomination, he takes Pennsylvania, and most likely Ohio as well. He even manages to put Michigan in play.

Santorum will be spending tomorrow night in Steubenville, Ohio:
http://www.hsconnect.com/page/.....l?nav=5010

In many ways, Steubenville epitamizes the rust belt; both in its conservative social values and its history of being a Democratic stronghold. Yet he managed to touch a nerve back there that Newt, and especially Rommney could not hope to do so in ten million years.

Bottom line; Santorum brings at least Ohio and Pennsylvania to the GOP. Mitt Romney brings.....absolutely nothing.

Oldefarte| 3.6.12 @ 11:38AM

No wrong, the worst thing that could/would happen to this country would be for Obama to become re-elected, and thereafter this country goes from 15% to 25% unemployment, a tripling of our defecit/debt from socialistic governmental policies SUCH AS OBAMA'S WELFARECARE etc!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Tom| 3.6.12 @ 6:51PM

The the Stupid Old Fool's evidence that the same thing will NOT occur under Romney is.....???????

mjs_pf| 3.5.12 @ 5:33PM

Q: What's worse than 4 more years of obama?

A: 8 years of romney

Tom| 3.5.12 @ 5:45PM

AMEN! Or worse yet, four years of a Romney Administration that crashes and burns, and then eight MORE years of another liberal Democrat!

And don't think that can't happen.

Oldefarte| 3.6.12 @ 11:41AM

If you can 'think' then understand that unless a Republican [even Romney] is elected, Obama and Democrats will destroy this country in four more years, and that they've partially now destroyed it in the three years of Obama's control. 'Think' that he'll finish the destruction if allowed four more years........THINK!!!!!

Tom| 3.6.12 @ 7:23PM

So Romney will prevent this country from being destroyed by doing,,,WHAT?????????

Wencil| 3.5.12 @ 6:57PM

Old blue collar Democrats,ie socially conservative statists.

Tom| 3.5.12 @ 7:17PM

Blue collar conservatives= the people who built America.

Oldefarte| 3.6.12 @ 11:43AM

And liberal/progressive DEMOCRATS are the ones historically who are destroying this country!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Tom| 3.6.12 @ 7:22PM

One "moderate" Republican can do more damage than half a dozen liberal Democrats.

Wencil| 3.5.12 @ 8:46PM

I really hate people who like to identify by race or class. They act like we are a society where people are stuck in their station in life,not unlike a caste system.

Tom| 3.5.12 @ 9:27PM

I really hate people who look down their stuck up noses at those who their superiors in every way that matters.

Wencil| 3.5.12 @ 9:48PM

Not "looking down my nose"at anybody. In fact i am saying it is wrong to get caught up with the idea of different class systems,as if we never can change our status. Maybe you prefer a permanent underclass.

Tom| 3.6.12 @ 6:14AM

It's the Marxists who want to abolish the different classes.

Casey Abell| 3.6.12 @ 8:42AM

Quin, drop the silly non-pledge pledge. We know you heart Santorum.

WL| 3.6.12 @ 9:41AM

Yeah Hillyer...

What is that 15 articles now...that you can't keep yourself from posting...but have to wear us out with how you are not posting...in the article that you are posting...but not posting....and only cut and pasted...with no rhyme or reason...other than to serve as a fiberoptic wire of information...that has no port...but it's the last time...it's the 5th exception to a rule no-one cares that you adhere to....

Yeah. Just drop it Hillyer and post nice things about your guy, Santorum..

I am afraid it won't matter anyway. I am convinced that Super Romney day will seal the deal...and we will have to live with the fact that the last three years of Obama have not resulted in our (the conservatives) controlling the party. It's going to take several more years...and some more dire circumstances brought on by Fidel Obama...if we make it that long...and if we can all get on the same page....

Whatever.

Oldefarte| 3.6.12 @ 2:47PM

The be all and end all is not exclusively through the presidential race. There's what is known as the congressional races [which IMHO is far more important than that of the presidency]. If Romney is indeed the Republican nominee and thereafter the president, then we conservatives can still elect numerous [think 25 approx congressional races are up for grabs in November] CONSERVATIVE REPUBLICANS [who can then politically persuade Romney to their way legislatively]. We conservatives do not lose with Romney but instead save our country from destruction from Obama/Democrats and obtain a political battleground to initiate needed conservative legislation to change the federal government. A Romney presidency would be a beginning, not an end to our fight!!!!!!!!
