This afternoon, Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse (D-R.I.) gave a speech in which he quoted Richard Hofstadter’s 1964 essay, “The Paranoid Style in American Politics” and accused ObamaCare opponents of inciting “vindictive passions”:
“Far from appealing to the better angels of our nature, too many colleagues are embarked on a desperate no-holds-barred mission of propaganda, obstruction and fear. History cautions us of the excesses to which these malignant, vindictive passions can ultimately lead. Tumbrils have rolled through taunting crowds, broken glass has sparkled in darkened streets. Strange fruit has hung from Southern trees. Even this great institution of government that we share has cowered before a tail-gunner waving secret lists.” (Emphasis added.)
A full text of Sen. Whitehouse’s remarks is not yet available, but at this moment, Sen. Jon Kyl (R-Ariz.) is rebutting the Democrat’s accusations. And, by the way, that Senate tail-gunner was right about one thing: There were indeed Soviet agents in the State Department.
UPDATE: More from the Whitehouse speech, referring to Hofstadter’s “paranoid style” thesis:
“Vindictive passions often arise, [Hofstadter] points out, when an aggrieved minority believes that America has been taken away from them their kind, though they are determined to try to repossess it and to prevent the final destructive act of subversion. Does that sound familiar … in this health debate? … [Hofstadter] wrote of the dangers of an aggrieved right-wing minority with the power to create what he called a political climate in which the rational pursuit of our well-being and safety would become impossible.”
It’s interesting — but probably no accident — that the first Republican to respond to Whitehouse’s provocative remarks was Kyl of Arizona. In 1964, Hofstadter’s essay was taken as an analysis of the conservative supporters of another Arizona Republican, Barry Goldwater.
By the way, these quotes are taken from an audio rush transcript of Sen. Whitehouse’s speech, the official text of which has not yet been published.
UPDATE II: More from the transcript of the Whitehouse speech:
“[Republicans have engaged in] a campaign of falsehood about death panels and cuts to Medicare benefits and benefits for illegal aliens and bureaucrats to be parachuted in between you and your doctor. Our colleagues terrify the public with this parade of imagined horrors. They whip up concerns and anxiety about socialized medicine and careening deficits and then they tell use the public is concerned about the bill.”
UPDATE III: Accusing the bill’s opponents of inflaming “unprecedented passions,” Whitehouse blamed the GOP for the extension of the health-care debate into the Christmas holiday:
“We see it in bad behavior. We see it in the long hours of reading by the clerks our Republican colleagues have forced. We see it in Christmases and holidays ruined by the Republicans for our loyal and professional Senate employees. It’s fine for me. It’s fine for the president. We signed up for the his job, but why ruin it for all the employees condemned by the Republicans to be here?”
UPDATE IV: If you voted Republican, here is how Sen. Whitehouse describes you:
“Why all this discord and discourtesy, all this unprecedented destructive action? All to break the momentum of our young president. They are desperate to break this president. They have ardent supporters who are nearly hysterical at the very election of President Barack Obama. The ‘birthers,’ the fanatics, the people running around in right-wing militias and Aryan support groups, it is unbearable to them that President Obama should exist.”
OK, so much for all those Aryan militia fanatics who vote Republican, what does Sen. Whitehouse think of the Senators those voters elected?
“Our colleagues are behaving in this way – unprecedented, malignant and vindictive – because they are desperate to avoid that day of judgment, frantic and desperate now and willing to strange and unprecedented things, willing to do anything, even throw our troops at war in the way of that day of reckoning. If they can cause this bill to fail, the truth will never stand up as a living reproach to the lies that have been told… . But when the bill passes and this program actually comes to life . . . there will come a day of judgment, and our Republican friends know that. That, Mr. President, is why they are terrified.”
There you have it, then: Nazis and militia kooks elect lying Republican senators who ruin Christmas and who oppose the bill only because they want to “break” the president and are terrified that if the bill passes, it will expose how they’ve engaged in fear-mongering propaganda.
Amazing that in his 1,700 word speech, Sen. Whitehouse didn’t find time to accuse his opponents of being “divisive” and “polarizing.”

Over the course of the Fall campaign and since his inauguration, our President has been subjected to all manner of vulgar, belligerent, hateful speech from the Conservative Hate Machine. Here are some documented examples uttered by Republican officials and supporters .... that have appeared both in the media and on numerous right-wing journalistic forums and at rallies.
He's a “Muslim” .. he's an “Islamic Fascist” .. he's, he's an “Arab” .. he's the “Messiah” .. he's the “Savior” .. he's “Barack the magic negro” .. he's a “member of Hamas” ... he “hates America” .. he's “Godless” .. he's “that one” .. he's a “Socialist” .. he's a “Racist” .. he's the “Anti-Christ” .. he's a “Communist” .. he's “Evil” .. he's a “Nazi” .. he's a “Gangsta Rapper” .. he's a “Traitor” .. he wants to “euthanize the elderly” .. he's a “fascist dictator” .. he's a “Jihadist” .. he's “gonna take away our guns” .. “Kill him, Kill him” .. “Off with his head” .. he's an “Illegal Alien” .. he “forged his birth certificate” .. he's “Adolf Hitler” .. he's a “Terrorist”.. he “should be buried with Kennedy”.
Does this look like the kind of speech one would expect from true American patriots .. or does this sound more like mob speech? Wouldn't a true American say “he's our “President”? The late Paul Weyrich would be proud of this ad hominem belligerence. Abraham Lincoln would be deeply ashamed.
But the current mainstream GOP doesn't stop with offensive hate speech. Indeed, here's a more recent demonstration of morality and American spirit coming from these protectors of American values .. on display at the Capital during the GOP's Thursday, November 5 mob rally against health insurance reform led by the House Republicans. Prominently displayed at our Nation's Capital in front of the speaker podium was a large banner containing a terrible Holocaust image showing a pile of dead, naked, emaciated bodies that reads National Socialist Health Care, Dachau Germany, 1945.

That's quite a list and quite a conclusion, each of which seems riddled with inconsistency.
I suspect you have a source for the quotes, but to pick a few - I recall the "magic negro" originated with an Los Angeles democratic source - and much publicized by a certain talk show host, as is his practice in pointing out left wing hysteria.
Also - the "forged his birth certificate" is news to me. I don't believe it's an issue at all, but I don't know that forgery has been alleged?
Finally - you've invoked Godwin's Law. Not too usefully.

He accumulated Frank Marshall Davis, Hugo Chavez, Mahmoud Amahdinejad, Louis Farrakhan, Daniel Ortega, the Arab-American Action network, CAIR, and Hamas among his associates, admirers, supporters, and mentors. He’s a human bug light for despots, terrorists, and hate spewers. No wonder the Islamic extremists salivated for a ‘change’ they can believe in. His kowtowing to some of the worst despots on the planet makes Jimmy Carter pale in comparison.
His economic policies are a distaster. We have 15% nation-wide unemployment while Mr. Hopey Changytude has implemented a socialist takeover of private industry and corporations, and will have given us (a projected) 23.7 trillion dollar deficit before he’s through ruining our economy.

He has an "enemies list", which includes Iraq War veterans like me, in the form of a DHS “threat assessment”. He’s called for his supporters to send “fishy misinformation” about his ObamaCare bill to a White House website. Dissent and debate from protesters has been met with threats and intimidation. He has tried, but failed to silence American patriots fed up with his socialist tyranny. (SEIU thugs, ACORN, harrassment of Joe (the plumber) Wurzenbacher). Why do you think millions of people across the country have participated in Tea Party rallies?
Obama is a failure of epic proportions. He’s a disgrace and an embarassment.
Let’s recap: He’s taking our country to hell in a socialist handbasket. He’s destroying our national security and economy. He’s trampling the U.S. Constitution. Belligerant countries like Iran, North Korea, and Venezuela, continue to build up their nuke capabilities and laugh their asses off at Obama’s stupidity.

If the government takes over health care in this country, there will be a Darwinization of medicine. Government claims agents will be appointed to decide whether or not your life is worth saving or if it’s “necessary” to provide treatment. The government will decide which doctor you will have, what kind of treatment will be allocated, and when. Like Canada. Like Britain. Like Germany. You will have no choice.
If you think the cost of medical treatment is high enough now, just wait if Obama gets his way.
Who do think will foot the bill for this train wreck? If you said “the already overburdened taxpayers”, congratulations.
The socialized medicine in Europe and Canada is so dicked up that seriously ill people will fly or drive here to get treatment. If anyone is stupid enough to believe that we should model our system after theirs, by all means travel to Canada, and see for yourself. And take a number.
The bottom line is the government wants to take away your choice of employer-sponsored insurance and private insurance, and replace it with an exclusive government-run health care system.
No one in their right mind wants the government to seize control of their health care.

Our Senator Whitehouse just never ceases to amaze me with his bizarre and vicious posturing. He says he cannot recall Bush being compared to Hitler, and does his best to convince us Obama is a victim of racism and worse. If that were so, Obama would never have won the election. Enough with the race card, please. It's been overplayed and has long ago lost its impact.
Senator Whitehouse and his wife have fascinating and revealing bios. The senator is not a blue collar liberal like the state he represents. The couple are very wealthy and privileged. I, for one, am tired of over-educated elites who loathe America thinking they know what's best for the rest of us. Americans are quite capable and resilient, but liberals prefer think otherwise in the hopes that we will abdicate our personal power to them. In places like Rhode Island, it's worked very well, unfortunately.
Our smallest state owes America a huge apology, I'm afraid. We are the people who sent this unit to Washington, along with Patrick Kennedy, Jack Reed, and James Langevin. It's a small political gene pool where corruption and cronyism is a well-entrenched fact of life. And Sheldon Whitehouse proves it.

As one of the foremost conservative leaders of our time, his influence on conservative policy and practices cannot be overstated. What should concern free-spirited Americans of all stripes are the avocations made by him and others of the New Right persuasion, perhaps best exemplified in his publication “Integration of Theory and Practice” wherein he states:

True Conservatives are inherently skeptical .. cautious .. even loath to take leaps of “faith”. Historically, they greatly value empiricism and are resolutely guided by it in policy formulations. .. and they are pragmatic. The party also has progressive roots, valuing incremental change over revolutionary shifts. Sadly, this empiric discipline has been replaced by dogma, hubristic confabulation and a descent into hysteria. And, in the face of the catastrophic failure of “supply-side” economics .. driven by a party that controlled the Presidency, Congress, or Both for the last 14 years prior to the last election, the GOP has mired themselves and this country in a miasma of failed policies. They've also burdened this country with a legacy of debt. As a factual matter, since 1945, four of every five dollars of added national debt were accumulated under Republican presidents, a total of $7 trillion. Blinded by ideology .. they are unable to come to terms with what they've done and are desperate, in the Weyrich tradition, to destroy anything that runs counter to their failed beliefs. Worse still, the GOP has codified all this into a “true republican” litmus test that is antithetical to many of its progressive roots, and antagonistic to all those in the party that advocate reform.
I don't think this is what John Adams had in mind for the American colonies. True pragmatic, working, deliberative Conservatism evolved well into the 20th century .. as exemplified by the Eisenhower and Rockefeller Republicans (now derisively called RINOs .. Republicans In Name Only). In its place, the current Grand Old Party's conservatism has devolved to a sad, twisted, ideologically driven parody of its former self .. a parody that came to devastating fruition under Ronald Reagan and G.W Bush, now led by hate radio talk show and television hosts. Sadly for all of us, this pestilence of failure will be with us for years to come.

In each case, (Clinton’s) doubts about the intelligence aborted the mission. Bin Laden got away.
While your ranting about bankers, faked mortagages, and trillions of dollars, you'd better get your facts straight. The Democrats created the Freddie Mac/Fannie Mae debacle, that forced banks to lend, at a subprime rate, to people who had no business getting home loans. In 2004, when Republicans warned that the mortgage programs needed regulation, Barney Frank, Maxine Waters, Christopher Dodd, et al, insisted that it didn't and accused critics of "rascism". Dems have a habit of race-baiting whenever their socialist ideas are questioned and proven wrong.
Americans are angry and won't take the current regime's jackbooted tyranny. When confronted over their bad policies, they hide in their offices, refuse to meet with their constituents, and fling epithets instead.
