Notre Dame Can't Stay Out of the News

Some Notre Dame alumni, faculty, and students are again irate at the administration, this time for sponsoring the Progressive Student Alliance's participation in last week's gay pride march/protest here in D.C.

I wasn't going to comment on it because it seems like inside baseball and not a big deal. But today the Washington Times reported on the incident:

Five students belonging to the school's Progressive Student Alliance were given an undetermined amount from the university's student activities fund - from fees assessed to students - to drive to Washington, bunk with friends and participate in the National Equality March last Sunday. Thousands of participants marched from the White House to the Capitol to support gay rights.

[...]

Dennis Brown, spokesman for the university, did not answer questions from The Washington Times about why one of the nation's pre-eminent Catholic institutions approved the trip, although he did e-mail a brief statement saying the PSA sponsored the journey. And in a short phone conversation, he said the PSA only needed approval from a faculty adviser to spend money on the trip.

William Dempsey, the head of Project Sycamore, which is a Notre Dame watchdog alumni association with an enormous mailing list, told the list that, regarding the topic, "the response I have received from the University is so patently evasive as to be an embarrassment."

Of course it's in the university's best interests simply to evade on this one, and dodge the p.r. flack. As I said, it's not a big deal, and they can probably get away with it by simplying waiting it out. But the principles in question are very clear cut: there is no real middle ground between the university's Catholic position and the aim of the progressive group. This raises two points.

1. Notre Dame clearly didn't learn anything from their commencement debacle. They have tried to take some steps toward healing the rift with conservative/orthodox Catholics, such as having the president, Fr. John Jenkins, announce that he will attend this year's march for life in DC. But this most recent mini-scandal shows that they are still too wary of offending the liberal constituencies' sensibilities to throw the orthdox faction even the smallest bone.

2. The fact that there's not really a way for the administration to spin this at all points to the inherent contradiction between "gay rights" and religious freedom. The university cannot make the case that the PSA students were in DC for any reasons possibly consonant with university policy because, as the Washington Times article puts it, "The Roman Catholic Church has taken one of the strictest stands against homosexual acts of any Christian denomination, calling such acts sinful and homosexual desires "disordered.'" In the case of students protesting for the state to legitimize what the Church perceives as "sinful," there is no way for Notre Dame to claim that there is a common ground position or an opportunity for "dialogue," as they tried with President Obama at commencement.

The larger point is that there is an inevitable conflict between Catholics' (and Christians' generally) freedom of religion and legal gay marriage. From the evidence it seems that Catholics have been upfront about this. Even Notre Dame reluctantly asserts policies that admit of no common ground with gay marriage advocates (even if they don't uphold those policies).

When do observant Catholics get to call ND "SBCC" instead?

I'm sure there were a lot of conservative alumni upset when Fr. Hesburgh marched for civil rights for blacks in the 60's.

What happened here? Five students secured a small amount of funding to go to Washington to express the political views of those five students.

The only controversy is in the minds of people who hate gay people, and who believe that that somehow makes them "better Catholics" than those whose hearts are not filled with hate. There is nothing Catholic about being anti-civil rights.

There's nothing Catholic about being pro-anal sex.

Marriage equality already exists. Every person must meet the same set of standards to be Married. "Gay" is not a person, it refers to sexual preference. The Constitution does not provide for establishing a separate personhood based on sexual preference. Refusing to condone homosexual sexual acts or any sexual act that does not Respect the Sacredness and Dignity of the Human Person is not discrimination.

The United States of America is not a theocracy. Apparently a lot of people would be happier if it was. Maybe they'd like it if this country was renamed The United States of Christ. Until that happens, they must accept the fact persons of ALL belief systems (whether Jews, Muslims, Atheists, Christians, Hindus, Zoroastrians, Pagans, etc.) are on equal legal footing.

As someone who was raised in the Catholic faith, I find it tremendously dismaying that the church has taken such an antagonistic position toward Gay people, especially Gay couples. There ARE other Christians and congregations are more supportive and accepting, but apparently the Catholic hierarchy thinks it's justified in meddling in public policy.

Why is it that Straight couples are encouraged to date, get engaged, marry and build lives together in the context of monogamy and commitment, and that this is a GOOD thing … yet for Gay couples to do exactly the same is somehow a BAD thing? To me this seems like a very poor value judgment.

Here is my advice to William Dempsey and Project Sycamore: Your faith is a personal matter. And if your personal faith informs you that Gay relationships (no matter how monogamous or long-term) are anathema, you are welcome to conduct your personal life as you see fit. You do not have the right to demand that persons of other faiths do the same.

When marriage equality for Gay couples finally becomes a reality (and it eventually will), I can promise you with 100% certainty that it will not affect your life, your marriage, your church, or your children ONE BIT. You will never have to worry about being denied a job or your love because of YOUR sexual orientation. Your church will never be forced to marry Gay couples, any more than it is forced to marry non-Christian couples.

Perhaps the best thing for you to do when it comes to your dealings with Gay individuals and couples is simply to obey The Golden Rule: Treat them as you yourself would wish to be treated.

As a born/raised/educated [16 years] Catholic, it is a fact [and not'rocket science'] that homosexuality is contrary to God's Natural Law [and most definately against the teaching/doctrine of the Catholic Church]. Discrimination of any variety is wrong and unlawful, but that does not allow Catholics immunity from obeying the Church's teaching regarding homosexuality. For a flagship university to consciously avoid such teaching should not be allowed; and this Catholic university should be sanctioned by the Church accordingly!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

"The Golden Rule: Treat them as you yourself would wish to be treated."

Which is what we are doing.

When I do something contrary to God, I want somebody to smack me upside the head and say, "Stop doing that! You're hurting yourself, everyone else, and most importantly Christ."

Letting someone continue to injure themselves by not telling them the Truth is not very Christian.

Nancy| 10.28.09 @ 1:39AM

The Constitution of the United States of America is based on the self-evident Truths that are endowed to each one of us from our Creator, God, with the capital G, the author of the Ten Commandments, which includes the Commandment to honor thy Father and Mother. This Commandment is consistent with God's intention for Marriage and the Family, to begin with.

Francis Beckwith| 10.16.09 @ 5:16PM

"You will never have to worry about being denied a job or your love because of YOUR sexual orientation. "

What you will have to worry about is keeping your job because you hold to the view that marriage is an institution that as a consequence of the way men and women have been designed. That view, as we learned from the post-prop 8 hate mongers, will not be tolerated. Many people were harassed and lost their livelihood merely because they had the temerity to believe that men, women, mothers, and fathers, etc. are not simply the consequence of our wills, but integral to the sustaining the good life.

If "marriage" is simply a creation of your will, then it is diminished.

Well, we have two heavy-hitting bullies here, Matt and Chuck. Matt meets those who don't admire what he admires, summarily marks them "hate-filled" and has a feel-good day. Then poor Chuck, insisting against all physical evidence that there's no important distinction between homo-and hetero- coupling, demands validation. Yes, you're the demanding one, Chuck, not Dempsey. From your standpoint, no coherent definition of marriage is possible and it's OK to marry one's sister or mom if it's monogamous and committed. Ah me, this is where the sexual revolution has taken us after 40+ yrs. We force ourselves to ignore what marriage is and see unborn human life as "just a clump of cells" or profess inability to know what it is. Never mind high-resolution sonograms and other imaging technology. (Above my pay grade etc.)

J.C.Eaton| 10.16.09 @ 7:34PM

Matt uses the word hate like a hand-grenade,throwing it around with no understanding of its meaning or explosiveness. Fortunately, Matt's grenade is dud...used carelessly so many times its become a tedious toy.Neither the author nor the Church hate anyone...nor has either said they do. Matt is dismissable because of his profligate use of the term. Chuck on the other hand simply misses a simple point. Irrespective of how he was raised(he claims Catholic), the prominence of the MAGISTERIUM as authentic Church teacher has eluded him. Believe anything you like lads, but don't try to do what the author's school does and claim that you are authentically Catholic. Best,

Notre Dame quietly reappoints Fr. Jenkins [Addendum: MSM stories?] « BaptistPlanet links to this page. Here’s an excerpt:
