Rarely is there as transparent an example of liberal media bias
as the
tantrum thrown by CNN’s Susan Roesgen yesterday while
“reporting” on a tea party, but the full extent of her bias only
comes into light when you look back at her attitude toward
anti-Bush protesters.
In video
posted by Paul Chesser from yesterday’s CNN broadcast,
Roesgen harassed a man who had a sign in which Obama was
portrayed as a fascist with a Hitler mustache. “Why be so hard on
the President of the United States though with such an offensive
message?” an indignant Roesgen hollered.
Yet back in 2006, when she was covering protests against the Bush
administration’s response to Katrina, she jokingly referred to
this photo of a man wearing a mask with devil horns and a Hitler
mustache as a Bush “look-alike.” (Video available at NewsBusters).
Personally, I don’t think it’s appropriate — or helpful — for
any protesters to portray the President in such a light, but this
isn’t about me. The point is that when an anti-Bush protester
assailed our last president with offensive imagery, Roesgen
viewed it as harmless fun, but when somebody dared portray Obama
in a similar fashion, she sanctimoniously attacked the protester
on national television.
UPDATE: More behind the scenes footage of Roesgen at the
Chicago tea party
here.

I was an active campaigner for Obama and do not agree with the TEA tax protests that occurred 4/15. I do believe they have the right to protest just as people protested against the war, Bush, pollution....etc. I usually dismiss the idea of media bias but Susan Roesgen is going to be the poster child for media bias for the next year. She needs to be fired for CNN to hang onto any credibility of a news organization. The filename fiasco from them in 2004 ( http://www.tabloidcolumn.com/cnn-bush-filename-asshole.html ) and now Susan Roesgen's inability to be unbiased for even 5 minutes shows some staff members cannot distinguish between objective reporting and pushing an agenda.

Is this one "joke" (stupid though it was) supposed to make it O.K. that Glenn Beck, Sean Hannity, and Michael Savage nightly claim that Obama is a "nazi," "fascist," or "tyrant"?
Is your standard for saying something is fair based entirely what others do?
Are you totally incapable of understanding why there might be some concern when pundits spend hours each day falsely claiming that our country is in the hands of its enemy (fascism, communism, terrorism -- whatever)? Does that really escape you?
Are you capable of stepping back and seeing things from anyone else's perspective? Do you understand why this ability is a trait of people who can be understood to be debating in good faith? How this is a quality universally recognized as inherent to intellectual honesty?
Three major Democratic figures -- JFK, RFK, and MLK -- were killed by extremists (one communist, one muslim terrorist, and one white racist).
Is it entirely impossible for you to understand why extremist rhetoric might get some people a little nervous?
I know, I know. I should shut up. I'm a communist. I'm a terrorist. I'm a traitor. I'm Hitler.

This type of double standard will be apparent throughout the Bush administration. I just had a former colleague at an one of those inside-the-Beltway pubs known for truly objective reporting dump me as a friend on Facebook when I called him out for applying the double standard in a comment on MY Facebook wall.
His argument, in a nutshell, was that talk radio has said far meaner things about Obama than anyone ever said about Bush. He offered no proof of his point about Obama, and when I showed him where he could find plenty evidence of "Bush derangement syndrome," he ended the conversation. It makes me worry whether even truly objective pubs like the one where I used to work will be acting like CNN before long.
Murray| 4.16.09 @ 2:11PM
Truth Hurts--is it just the truth that you see or is it the truth as it is? You show your bias when you make the statement 'is this one "joke".." CNN is a joke but not the way you see it. Why not just admit that this CNN reporter has a history of hating the right and not make yourself part of her foolishness?
krystal| 4.16.09 @ 2:16PM
Truth Hurts - your concern seems to be a little too late. Were you not alarmed when nightly the pundits were savagely attacking Bush. And I havent seen any debate once the left is involved - it is all smear tactics and distractions. The extremist rhetoric as you call it is a matter of perspective - I am alarmed when free speech is shut down on campuses, when Code Pink can protest our military in front of recruiting stations, when protestors carry signs asking for people to murder US military people, when we cannot trust the media to give us all the news, when Palin's family was attacked while the silence remains deep on Biden's daughter and the list goes on. Janet Napolitano is more concerned (as was Janet Reno) in attacking our own citizens rather than stopping illegal immigration. That concerns me.
As for the assasinations - in my mind the jury is still out as to the motivations of those events.
Maybe you should open your mind and really listen to how others feel about taxes and our Constitutional rights.
Mark| 4.16.09 @ 2:24PM
Truth Hurts - I don't listen to GB very often, SH very frequently, and MS rarely. I have never heard SH call BO a facist, nazi, or tyrant. He may have said that BO's policies are what one would expect from a facist, tyrannical, or nazi regime, but there is an important distinction. Aside from that, SH, GB, and MS are not reporters, and they don't claim that they are. On the other Hand, SR is (ostensibly) a CNN reporter.

I suppose you have a point. But is your only defense of right-wing extremist talk the fact that people on the left did it too?
Or is there some reason why you think Glenn Beck is entitled to narrow his ungrateful, repulsive porcine eyes at his television audience and tell them their government is fascist?
Do you, do any of you, even know what fascism was? Didn't you cover this in high school?
It is morally, historically, logically, politically, factually, metaphysically FALSE, untrue, bunko, incredible to assert we live in a fascist state.
Hundreds of thousands of Americans died fighting fascism in WWII. (You have heard of WWII, right?)
These pundits, shallow nit-wits that they are, travesty and triviliaze fascism with this rhetoric.

Mark Mansfield I agree. I am not keen on comparing any president to Hitler, but the media has become so transparent. For 8 years and during the Reagan Admin, we heard nothing but Bush is Hitler, Reagan is Hitler etc etc. And the media never questioned the protesters as to whether or not that was inappropriate of offensive, but this Cnn reporter takes it upon herself to take umbridge with some guys sign.
I think John Stewart tore into this reporter during the flooding in the midwest. I think it was the episode where he had Jack Cafferty on.
Also, I think our journalism schools are turning out people who don't understand the role of a reporter. A reporter should "REPORT" on events to let people who can't be there at the time of the event. know what is going on there. On Martin Luther King's politics:
1. MLK was probably registered Republican. Most blacks in the 40s and 50s were. They were deeply offended by southern "dixiecrats."
2. MLK voted for JFK and Lyndon Johnson.
3. MLK was politically LIBERAL. He went to Memphis, where he was killed, to help organizing sanitation workers. He was pro-union, anti-war, pro-affirmative action, and deeply invested in promoting increased social services. If that's Republican, I'm an arch-bishop.
4. MLK lived during a time when the two parties changed identities very rapidly. Nixon's "southern strategy" deliberately courted racist "dixie crats" and drew them out of the Democratic party. That was the end of the affiliation of most black voters with the Republicans.
I'm not denying that many Republicans admire MLK, just as many liberals (like me) admire Ronald Reagan. But he was NOT one of you politically or philosophically.

Most of what I hear is anger at the government (in general) for suddenly expanding into the private sector... an area long seen as "OFF LIMIS" and then spending so much money they have to PRINT MORE! We aren't "extremists"... sure, some people talking out there might be, but not a vast majority of us. Most of us are simple people who want "smaller government" (remember Clinton? He said the age of Big Government was over??) But instead we are getting an extremely over-reaching government that seems to think that when you speak out against it you are somehow "un-American." Sorry... no matter how much I don't usually like this, you don't get much more "American" than to do just that... protest against your government! Truth Hurts, I am old enough to remember MLK and the events surrounding his adult life. To say he was a liberal is a stretch at best. Although flawed himself in many ways, MLK's primary objective throughout his political career (yes, political, even though he was not an office holder) was to erase skin color, religion and gender as a basis for rejecting or denying one's right to the same Constitutional rights as others. He WAS NOT pro-affirmative action, and he was a Republican by choice, not because he had to choose the lesser of two evils. The Democrat Party was, is and will always be the Party of Racism. The difference between today and the time between the Civil War and, say, 50 years ago, is simply the Democrats' style of racism. Previously, the s.o.p. of Democrats was to rid the nation of blacks and other minorities. It wasn't until the advent of the Great Society and civil disobedience that Democrats ushered in a new approach - one that changed the tone of discussion. In a nutshell, the Democrats went from looking at blacks as property, to looking at blacks as pets. Rather than own them, today they brainwash them with propaganda and distortion. Instead of "we'll kill you" it is now "we'll take care of you."
Leslielb4| 4.16.09 @ 3:33PM
Steve...BINGO!!!! This is so hard for some of our fellow Americans to comprehend. Why do you suppose that is? Could it be the state of our public schools over the past ,say 20 years? You're an uneducated, brainwashed little liberal moron who's never questioned his beliefs. Yes, Obama won. But what kind of victory? If you actually watched Glenn Beck you would find out that he has never called Obama anything but 'President' and occassionally has said his policies are socialist (can't argue with that). He also regularly criticized (and continues to criticize) the Bush administration. These tea parties weren't about right or left, republican or democrat. They were about right and wrong. The government is slowly starting to take our freedoms and liberties away and the people are tired of it. The only reason it seemed like a GOP event is because most liberals can't wait for th gov't to take over their lives.

It's really crazy how so many people are in an uproar over Obama's Tax plan when his tax plan will be beneficial to most Americans. I highly doubt all of you protesting make enough money to get hit with higher taxes. Where were all of you when Bush led us into an illegal war or where were the questions about what really happened on 9/11??? Bush commited so many crimes and none of you had the balls to say anything about it. Now because we have an intelligent president who is going to actually tax the rich(who under Bush paid far less percentage of taxes), just like everyone else is taxed, you guys are throwing a fit like a 2 year old. It makes me sick to hear all these right wing nut jobs blame the countries mess on Obama when in all reality this mess was caused by George W. Bush and his theives in the White House. Bush is the Hitler, just like Hitler. Hitler went to War based off a "terrorist" attack on the German Parliament that was later found out to have been started by Hitler's people and blamed on the polish "terrorist's". Within days of the attack's Hitler pushed through the "Enabling Act"(almost exactly the same as the Patriot Act) and then went to War. Sounds like history repeated itself with Bush. We have a "terrorist" attack on the world trade center and within days have the Patriot Act. Then the "terrorist" attacks were used to justify going to war with a country that had nothing to do with the attacks. Also did anybody know that Prescott Bush(Bush's grandpa) had Major business deals with Hitler himself and was actually brought up on charges of treason. PEOPLE NEED TO EDUCATE THEMSELVES!!!

Thruth Hurts - Did you "cover in High School" that Hitler and his National Socialist Party were leftists? Or was fascism born as a product of the right of the left? The fact that you can regurgitate quotes from msnbc and the hateful hacks like the one about the Americans dying fighting nazi's in WWII. Did you cover in high school what happened in the 1930's before the war? I would bet not. The similarities are very and scarily similar:
1- Cult like followers (is ther e a mirror close by?)
2- Attacking the "rich" subset as the problem.
3- Turn public opinion against the bankers (Jews were the bankers)
4- Set income limits by institututing a Marxist progressive tax against non-nationalistic endeavors
..and that was just 1932 until '35.
1935 to 40 was where he made his more sinister moves but his power was solidified and no one dared oppose him the finances were not there for opposition.
Today you and the group you are shilling for are demonizing/marginalizing people with whom they disagree very musch like the brownshirts did for Hitler. I think anyone in the media that has studied the 1930's and Hitler would be remiss not to mention the playbook being used. But the kicker is you are forgeting that all this centralization of power to our federal government will not always be run by the people you like, what happens then?
Are you ready for the truth to really hurt? This Left vs. right and Dem vs. Rep is all a game and you and I are losing. Truth Hurts-
Part of the point is, in fact, that nasty words are tossed back and forth, from left to right and back again. I agree the concept of fascism is trivialized when lobbed about by unhappy populists, but it seems America has lost her distaste for it in the years since WWII, otherwise we would be more aggressive when we encounter it in places like N.Korea , Afghanistan and Iraq.
What you are missing is the fact that insults are generally tolerated by the right as the nature of the political beast, whereas the left immediately calls foul whenever their views are questioned. If the word fascist is uttered by Glen Beck, most liberals don't even need to hear it for themselves before they start tossing out words like "hate-monger" or insist this is "anti-government" and yet Olberman has used that exact same word countless times in the last eight years. (I saw him do it. Contrary to popular belief, many conservatives watch news on many stations. Contrary to lefties who simultaneously brag about never listening to Rush, watching FOX, etc. and still feel qualified to summarize and judge the message. Not possible.)
You are correct about us living in the wealthiest, most free and democratic society in the world, we just want to keep it that way and understand that expanding government and handing out checks to the majority of the nation is not how this is done.
Did Bush spend too much and hand out checks? Yes he did, and the right was outraged as they well should have been. The libs. failed to take note, and now use the deficit created as a sort of justification. Where is the logic in this? Who thinks that because they are already in debt, they might as well multiply it several times over? Not rational and responsible individuals, how do you think we got where we are today?

Leslielb4, I think the problem is simply an inherent disadvantage we will always have due to our views. Think about it, public schools are controlled by left-wing unions, and most will agree that schoolteachers generally are not paid well. Yes, many today are overpaid based on performance, but that is a symptom not the cause. I believe the problem therein lies that capitalists are first concerned with the welfare of their family and thus are attracted to careers that have limitless opportunities to reap limitless rewards while liberal shut-ins prefer the easy propaganda target of children and don't really care how much money they make so long as the rest of the world joins them in their misery. Most (actually, it's close enough we could say "all" and be accurate) college professors are left-wing socialists. These are people who never left school and have no real world life experiences, except the occasional violent protests at Christian functions or feces-tossing competitions at soldiers' funerals. We have 40+ years of liberal scum helping to form the thought processes of our children. We won't change this in a generation, and with 51% of the voting citizens of this country now on the government dole and contributing nothing to society (actually, just the opposite), we have a genuine war on our hands. The only bright side I see is this: a vast vast majority of the soldiers, farmers, hunters and job-producers of this nation are on our side. We have the guns and the brains. The left has the cross-dressing trannys and dope-smoking college professors. When the fight turns physical, the left will only last as long as George Sorro's checking account.

Webster's definition of Facism:
a political philosophy, movement, or regime (as that of the Fascisti) that exalts nation and often race above the individual and that stands for a centralized autocratic government headed by a dictatorial leader, severe economic and social regimentation, and forcible suppression of opposition.
If that does NOT sound like what Obama is trying to do with INCOME redistribution and his takeover of the government, I don't know what is.
Just for you. There was another guy who was a 'community organizer', he also gave GREAT speeches and was FURIOUSLY defended by people like you. His name was Adolph Hitler.

To previous posters: MLK was not a Democrat (sorry) and Nazis were socialists -- I don't think any conservative thinks Obama is a German Nazi. But Obama's "style" is similar to the rise of Hitler (just as an example of a dictator or tyrant, if that applies to Hitler). The symbol, the singing, the cult of personality, the promise to "remake" America, the deliberate and aggressive demonizing of opposition and previous administration, the "civilian army" thing, the talk of nationalizing everything and mandated green and social agenda, the culture of death (extreme abortion agenda), the tremendous leftist political finance and propoganda and networking machine supporting and promoting Obama's personality (not just the politician), and Obama's youth militants, and MOST DISTURBING is the intent of his supporters to silence anyone who questions him.

The difference between Hannity, O'Reilly, Beck, Obermann, Matthews, Maddow and all the other COMMENTATORS is that they're not news reporters. Commentators are expected to have an opinion - a reporter is supposed to be unbiased. Roesgen is biased. And with network heads allowing this kind of cr*p, the people out there who are still interested in honest reporting should turn this stuff off.
judithod| 4.16.09 @ 4:23PM

Sheeple| 4.16.09 @ 4:23PM
I could stomach an honest debate between conservatives and liberals...unfortunately this has been overshadowed by Democrats and Republicans. Both of which, categorically, seem to be more consumed with power than integrity.
Today's liberals have not learned that it was yesterday's Democrats that voted for segregation in the 1950's and 1960's. Minorities rights were supported by Republicans, who at that point, acted more like conservatives.
Today's Republicans will choose not to see the truth in favor of their party while abandoning their principles.
With regard to "reporters" and a comparison to "talk radio", Hannity, Limbaugh, et al, are not reporters, they are entertainers. As such, they are not held to the same standard of objectivtity.
The fact that people don't recognize that is disturbing.

One of our rights in this country (at least it was yesterday) is the right to assemble and disagree with the government. The Tea Parties must really have the liberals worried because they sure over-reacted. Ms Roesgen was not only rude but out of control. I suggest we begin to watch which companies are advertising and supporting the mainstream media and let them know that us "rich", "extremist" "fake" Tea Party goers will boycott their products as long as they support programs that use these suppressionist tactics for slanting the news. Fascist business policies or "national socialism" is where government does not directly control business such as in communism, but where government promotes large oligopolies and there is a cozy almost incestuous relationship between government and big business. Looking at everything that has happened starting with Bush and continuing with Obama we are definitely a fascist state now. We are not going to go after the jews, but national socialism is not defined by one example of ethnic hatred. There have been many fascist states and will continue to be, Saudi Arabia is one. Obama even bowed to it's king

Truth Hurts worries about people taking FoxNews information as gospel; and he has a valid fear. However, what TH needs to understand is that each of us here have the same fear about the Mainstream Media who has undeniably proven their love affair with the left. When all of us were needing more information on Obama in order to make a sensible voting choice, we were denied the necessary facts to understand that Obama was only another politician who cannot be trusted to walk his talk.
So, here we are, a day after numerous examples of people wanting to voice their disenfranchisement with the current occupants of the public offices in Washington D.C. for good reason. What does the mainstream media do? They denigrate the very voices of 'We the People' in support of the people they helped get into office by either flavoring the truth or refusing to report on it.
Regardless of your ideological slant, each of you had better wake up and realize that public dissension is being squashed here; and sooner or later your view is going to conflict with our public servants and will meet the same fate. If this is what you want, keep on keeping on. Otherwise, make your small still voices heard about this nation adhering to the Constitution on which it was founded.

Why should it come as a surprise that CNN, MSNBC, etc. tow the party line for Obama? Does anyone capable of abstract thought lack the ability to see it?
The truth is, they are OPENLY in Obama's political camp. He was their candidate, and these networks are the closest thing we have seen to a Soviet-style state-controlled news media in the history of our nation. Thankfully, there are a few reporters (very few) on their staffs that actually are balanced journalists. That's the only thing standing between objective journalism and total state-run media.

It's over. Too many Americans saw exactly what was going on, by attending a Tea Party or watching Fox and seeing it with their own eyes, and then turning to CNN, MSNBC or the networks and seeing the blatantly biased, vulgar, and cruelly negative coverage.
The cover has been completely blown and I have confidence in the American people, that what some may have missed during the election, they have now seen openly on display: the breathless propping up of this president and his administration by the exposed non-journalists. The American people realize they've been had - and it's taken less than 100 days.

Too bad Truth Hurts finally blew up! He almost made some semi-intelligent arguments, but like most liberal arguments, they fall apart quickly. Let's make it simple. Liberalism kills economies, kills health care (Canada, UK), chokes off freedom of speech, restricts liberty, removes incentive to succeed, and generally screws up EVERY government in which it has ever been allowed. Liberalism punishes success through taxation and rewards sloth and laziness through safety-net and nanny state programs. Liberalism promotes atheism, environmentalism, and does it 's best to permanently indoctrinate children through the education system. Am I getting warm yet? These and other things are what have so many of us loyal citizens (oops - now enemies of the state according to Napolitano) so very concerned. We won't shut up or go away. We will however, work very hard to reclaim our country by voting out the Pelosi/Dodd/Reid/Obama cabal of socialists. Notice please that they are all very wealthy people, being protected by other wealthy people. webster's definition - fascism: a political philosophy, movement or regime that exalts nation and race above the individual and that stands for a centralized autocratic government headed by a dictatorial leader, severe economic and social regimentation, and forcible suppression of opposition. Looks like we're headed this way unless we the people wake up.

Truth Hurts - Uh oh, looks like somebody hit a nerve. It's ok Truth, take a deep breath.
And actually, the vice president isn't Dick Cheney, It's Joe Biden. We had an election last year in case you didn't hear. And neither Joe Biden, nor the president, Barrack Obama served in the military either.
Just so you know I also served in the military, and will be going back in after my degree.
And No, I am not going to call you a nazi, or a traitor, or a retarded bigot, or anything else. But I do find it funny that you call everyone cowards because they won't call you names to your face. That seems like a brave thing to say! Invite people to say stuff to your face when you know good and well that they can't seeing as this is a blog. Very Brave indeed. It's like me arguing with someone in Europe when I'm in America and calling them a coward because they won't come over right then and fight. LOL
"I served in the military. Did your chickenshit vice president, Joe Biden or your chickenshit president, Barrack Obama?" - Funny how you said something similar when it could be turned around and made even worse. Are you always this stupid?

JohnD sums this whole mess up perfectly. This country is about the powerful protecting the powerful. It is quite disgusting, no matter which political party is in charge. Much of this is the province of 2 and 6 year elections. We actually DO NEED TERM LIMITS!!!
People can actually make politics thier lifes blood.
6 years for the house(12 years)
2 years for the senate(12 years)
This is 24 years in the FREDERAL GOVT.
ENOUGH IS ENOUGH!!!!
I am tired of the fiefdoms within our US CONGRESS!
We NEED to do this for the sake of our nation.
By the way, most of these poeple get elected AFTER some amount of time in our respective State Governments!
We almost had it at one time. PEOPLE are sick of these mini-fiefdoms!!!

the differences in shows and reporters is this woman is a reporter...Hannity, O'Reilly, Beck are commentators. They are allowed to give their own views. This woman is a reporter...there to simply report. I have never seen this kind of attack from a reporter reporting for a NEWS show...commentators yes, not news shows. See the difference? Truth Hurts, thank you for expressing your viewpoint. While I don't agree with you on most of what you said, I don't think insulting anyone personally is at all constructive towards getting someone to at least understand the other viewpoint.
The thing the media is confused about, and perhaps you as well, is that I and many of my fellow protesting Americans are Republicans. I am NOT.
In fact, I would be willing to be that you and I have many common thoughts about liberty, freedom and the disconnect and predictable failure of government.
I am an American, first and foremost, who believes in the founding principles and rights that helped make this country great. But, I see these principles being eroded, administration by administration, as more laws and regulations slowly whittle our rights away - telling us what we can think, say, produce, buy, smoke, or even eat.
Do you actually think free speech is alive and well? It's not, it's being threatened with increasing regularity by fascists, yes fascists, who are willing to intimidate and threaten for one viewpoint and one party with zero dissent. This reporter is only one of the ways the free exchange of ideas is being perverted or stifled.
Look up what happened to Tancredo when he tried to give a speech at UNC a few days ago. In fact, think about what happens to any 'non-pc' voice that tries to explain their viewpoints. Instead of allowing them to be heard and then debated on their facts or merits, their words are either censored as hate-speech, or are shouted down by protesters who's sole purpose is to censor an opposing view so it never has to be debated.
Why am I protesting now? Because our government turned up the heat a little too fast and some of us frogs realize we are being cooked.
Supporting Obama doesn't mean being blind to the fact that just the interest on 10 trillion dollars of debt is enough to fund a war, help keep Social Security solvent, or give every taxpayer a $2,000 rebate check each year.
Do you really think politicians fear being voted out of office for showing common sense and balancing the budget? Think on that question and their motivations and you get a small taste of where many American's anger is coming from.
Dan| 4.16.09 @ 6:37PM
Fox is just as biased as CNN or anyone else. What are you all griping about. By the way, the only reason Fox is the #1 news show is because rednecks don't have jobs and sit aroung drinking beer and watching TV all day.
Alynne33 | 4.16.09 @ 7:26PM
Dan,
I'm not a redneck and I hate beer. I am a stay at home mom, who watches the news to keep abreast of current issues while her baby sleeps. Anyone who makes such an inane and petty generalization loses all his credit from here on out. And for the record, Fox News is the #1 program because Rachel Maddow and Keith Olbermann make their network look hatemongering and without any real credible attacks on anyone.
MJ| 4.16.09 @ 7:40PM
750 Anti-tax and spend demonstrations take place across the country and no one but Foxnews covered it properly. Most of the media, ignored the event, down played it or made outright bias statements denigrating it. The news media is not supposed to take sides; you’re there to report the news. Thank god for FoxNews, they are reporting the news fairly and we wouldn’t know half of what is going on in this country without them!
Greg| 4.16.09 @ 7:54PM
Doesn't anyone remember when Hillary stood up and yelled that it was american to protest when you disagreed with your government. I don't aggree with spitting on your enemy in the debate, but, disagreement... discussion... that is what it is all about. The protesters in the 60's had it right, the protesters during the bush years had it right(sans calling the president the devil) AND
T0m Paine| 4.16.09 @ 8:17PM
I've attempted to engage in debate here, and I marvel at how quickly discussions degenerate into people calling each other "fascists" and nazis.
I think many people on both sides of the divide need to learn something about DECORUM.
I beg you to consider the following suggestions:
1. If you feel the need to call someone a Nazi, you already lost the debate. (Yes, this rule applies even if you actually do think the person you are complaining about really is a fascist.)
2. Ad hominem attack is for weaklings. If you attack the character of your opponent rather than his ideas, you've already lost the debate.
3. Snark, like irony, to which it is related, has taken over the general styles of political debate. Snark is extremely toxic and ultimately self-defeating. Avoid snark.
4. Your grandmother is always right. Argue like she's in the room. You'll be happier if you do.
5. Calling names is foolish and self-defeating. Calling people "traitors," "communists," and so on may ingratiate you to a small pack of angry people, but it won't persuade anyone to take your ideas more seriously. Quite the opposite.
REMEMBER: Ultimately, extremist rhetoric does not endanger the state.
Extremist, intemperate rhetoric endangers DISSENT.
When dissent comes to be identified with loud-mouthed, red-faced, fit pounding and exasperated rage, it will lose its force.
The rodeo-clownification of dissent is well under way.
I say, reject it like it was someone offering you a poisonous rattle snake.
GlennCraven| 4.16.09 @ 8:18PM
The bigger point that "Truth Hurts" is missing -- and, though I haven't extensively read all the responses, everybody else might've missed, as well -- is the difference between what Hannity, Beck and Savage do, and what Susan Roesgen is SUPPOSED to be doing.
Hannity, Beck and Savage (just like Lou Dobbs on CNN, Olbermann and Maddow on MSNBC, etc.) are commentators rather than reporters. The instant you switch on their program, you should realize, though sadly a lot of people probably don't, that everything they "report" is colored by their opinions.
Roesgen is supposed to be engaged in purely reporting the news, and for that, you have to set bias aside. You can challenge the accuracy or plausibility of an interviewee's answers, but the situation should not turn confrontational nor combative (at least by act of the reporter). Admittedly, that can be difficult to do; it certainly seems like Roesgen has failed at it. She turned a man-on-the-street interview into "Crossfire." But an unbiased presentation of the news (even if you think the guy standing in front of you is a nitwit) is what journalism is supposed to be all about.
Greg| 4.16.09 @ 8:29PM
Doesn't anyone remember Hillary Clinton? When she stood up and yelled that it was patriotic to protest when you think the government is wrong. aside from calling the president the devil or hitler or spitting on someone you disagree with. I think the 60's protesters had it right, the bush era protesters had it right AND the Tea Party protesters HAVE IT RIGHT. The government(republican or democrats and anything in between) works for us! If we disagree with our elected officials we should let them know. No amount of "we won so shut up" "pearls of wisdom" can counter that. You have the right to say it but we have the right to disagree. The fact that CNN, MSNBC and their ilk all seem to say, this is just sour grapes and btw(all the teab@g jokes) really just shows you that they are uninterested in true democratic action when they disagree with the viewpoint. At least foxnews is being supportive about this. Now, if someone tells me that fox shouts down different viewpoints I say "THAT'S JUST AS WRONG!!!"

Furthermore, I challenge you to find one instance of Sean Hannity calling Barack Obama a nazi.
And frankly, anyone who claims the left was not comparing Bush to Hitler (I guess you don't remember Bushitler)constantly is so stupid it is almost worthless responding to said person. I am curious, do you wear a helmet at the dinner table TRUTH HURTS?

And you may want to cut the sob story about namecalling. The left lost any high ground when they started making "teabagging" jokes and began stating outright, like Paul Begala in a CNN commentary piece yesterday, that the protesters were unpatriotic whiners. All of a sudden, disagreeing with the administration has become a patriotism litmus test for the left; if that is not fascism, I don't know what is.

"It's really crazy how so many people are in an uproar over Obama's Tax plan when his tax plan will be beneficial to most Americans. I highly doubt all of you protesting make enough money to get hit with higher taxes. Where were all of you when Bush led us into an illegal war or where were the questions about what really happened on 9/11??? "
I don't even know where to begin when discussing the above nonsense. It is not just about taxes, it is about the tripling of the deficit this president's budget will cause. It's about his out of control spending. It's about bailing out company after company with no end in sight. It's not about the tax burden now, it's about the tax burden our kids and grandkids will live under when the day of reckoning comes and we actually have to start paying for Obama's fiscal recklessness. Do you honestly think all of his spending and entitlement expansion won't result in huge future tax increases on everyone?
And please spare us the nonsense about how we should be so thankful about getting to keep an extra eight dollars a week.
As for the illegal war, I challenge you to cite which United States' laws George Bush broke when he decided to wage war on the Hussein regime in Iraq. The United States is a sovereign nation. That it didn't get the permission of the UN does not make it illegal.
As for the 9/11 stuff, all I can tell you is that you are an idiot. And please, don't even bother to chastise anyone for calling Obama a fascist or socialist if you are going to accuse George Bush of deliberately murdering 3000 American citizens.
Mark| 4.16.09 @ 10:58PM
"Are you totally incapable of understanding why there might be some concern when pundits spend hours each day falsely claiming that our country is in the hands of its enemy (fascism, communism, terrorism -- whatever)? Does that really escape you."
Then I guess you better travel back in time and tell Keith Olbermann to quit calling Bush a fascist. And while you are at it, you might want to tell him to quit comparing Rush Limbaugh to the Taliban.
Seriously, if you claim you were unaware that the left routinely compared, and still does compare, George Bush and the Republicans to Nazis and fascists you are either stupid or a liar. Which are you?
And while you are at it, quit trying to use Michael Savage as an example. He is a pariah in most conservative circles.

Dan Rather was a CBS nobody when JFK was assassinated. As for targeting the killer, it was Jacqueline Kennedy who said after learning who the killer was that her husband was killed by a stupid communist.
Lee Harvey Oswald tried to be a real communist by defecting to the Soviet Union but he was deported. Upon returning home he became a lover of Castro and a self styled communist.
In addition it was the lunatic left i.e. Oliver Stone who poisoned a generation by making a case in "JFK" that the real assassin was James Ferrie, totally and absolutely innocent and Jim Garrison a hero prosecutor who went after Ferrie.
Garrison in reality was a mean, unprincipled, power hungry, publicity seeking alcoholic who indicted an innocent man for nothing just like Nifong did in the Duke Lacross student case.
Stone was an addict and a mean one who poisoned the minds of many of the young who saw that trash of a film he made. "JFK" was a lie from beginning to end and Stone was a leftist Castro loving communist sympathizer.

I cheer both Tom Paine and Glubber here (many others - can't believe I've read through all of these...!). Here's my two cents, in case anyone with my absurd attention span ever gets to it...;-)
Just as we are putting our "non-representing representatives" on notice, we need to put our "non-reporting reporters" (er, their ADVERTISERS) on notice.
The fact is, when our representatives fail to adhere to their OATH to protect / defend the Constitution of the United States of America, it is dangerous to America.
Similarly, when "mass media" fails to report on the facts of stories like this that are critical to our interests (I have posted my full statement on this topic at tristansepinion.blogspot.com , as two local stations failed to put the story on their homepages when other stations reported it as the biggest event of its kind in years...definitely front page news), their actions are DANGEROUS to the citizenry and, therefore, to America.
As Thomas Jefferson said, "An informed citizen is the only true repository of the American will."
In failing to report the truth of our voice of protest, the media dupes its audience into believing that our voice as smaller than it really is. In allowing "reporters" to add in commentary that marginalizes and attacks, etc., the media becomes a dictator, telling its audience what to think of what they are seeing. Now, never has journalism been without bias - but this is what has truly become "extreme" in our culture, today. When people have to resort to blogs and hours of online research to "dig" and "assemble" their own corner of "truth" then what service the media providing anymore?
Ultimately, people make "sound" choices based on "sound" information - if folks make determinations based on biased reporting or non-reporting (omission, in my book, IS a lie), there is greater potential for grave errors in judgment to be made, resulting in greater potentail for grave consequences in their community and country.
In my blog, I, too, have suggested we start making a careful list of advertisers associated with "non-reporting reporter" stations and see to it that they are put on notice - that the advertisers understand that we will not support those who fail to serve the accurate information needs of WE, the people. The role of the media in our country should be counted right up there next to that of our representatives in Congress. Our faith MUST be restored, if we are to be a country fully rooted (in REAL terms) in our Constitution again.
What has become apparent is this: we are losing trust - trust in our representatives; trust in our reporters. What is left? What trust will WE leave our children? What rights? What atmosphere (will they be able to speak their voice of dissent and protest, as did MLK and as we are doing, today?) will they know - one of fear or one of faith?
It's time to come together in non-partisan fashion and ensure that our trust among one another does not become the final, most devastating casualty here. Our children are depending on US to be the leaders that both our representatives and reporters cannot seem to manage to be, working "on behalf of our interests." Let's US be the "non partisan" change WE want to see.

Decided We'll Fall| 4.19.09 @ 10:08AM
The entire tone of this great nation has forever been dictated by democrats' leanings. This unerring certainty is the one, true misdeed uneducated American people continuously enact.
Liberals - whether yesteryear's or today's - have harangued from on high since their formation, dictating non-negotiable terms. And whomsoever shall speak against the power-hungry party's plan of the day will be branded a threat to social democracy; an enemy of the state.
It is no coincidence that upon the democrats' permutation from oppressor to protector, racial indifference and out-and-out hatred began to quickly subside.
Transparently, though not to the laymen, obviously, power-hungry liberals of the day seized credit for the change, stealing the honor of a brave few and dividing it equally amongst their cowardly many.
Now that liberals of the day were no longer beating blacks into submission, the new appealing rule was to placate their needs, feed their fears and fuel their rage about white, conservative men -- who surprisingly and unwillingly were forced to fill the vacated seats of racists.
White conservatives never took the bait. They never became the new equivalent. So liberals had to think fast. Suddenly, it came to them: simply perpetuate stereotypes in the minority community, continue to showcase a willingness to help, but blame the "other side" for progress failing to be made.
Thus a new type of racism was born. This racism, wholly unlike liberal racism, is called "coded," and "hidden" racism. And the minority community ate it up. ... But liberals weren't done there.
They've since been destroying any and everything that might mean something to a conservative, all in the name of widening the gap and fueling disdain.
The world's largest irony: Racism started to subside and people wised up once the liberals of the day stopped saying it was okay to hate based on skin tone. But now they're at it again, proclaiming that it's okay to hate their opponents and subsequently blaming the country's shortcomings on conservatism and tradition.
If anyone ever questions the mind of a person who could treat another person as second-class simply because of their skin color, just take a look at what's happening today: The liberals say it's okay, and millions are hated (it's deemed perfectly acceptable, to boot) simply because they don't subscribe to today's liberal ideology.
Just look around at the hordes of people hating other people simply because they're different. It's all a condition of liberal brainwashing, just like American racism. Wake up.
Liberals are the hate-mongers to end all hate-mongers.

CNN you can do better than that. You call Susan Roegen a reporter! It's just indignant hollering. We're really not interested in Susan's personal opinion.
I was looking forward to interviews with the tea party participants and learning what they had to say and what brought them out to a tea party.
KMF| 4.19.09 @ 3:40PM
don't people usually get fired for the way that the liberal media covered the tea parties??? sexual innuendos??? badgering of people by reporters??? why are we even discussing this??? anderson cooper and susn roegen and the likes should be fired. why is there any other consideration for this matter???

I don't think you get it either. Most of the people demonstrating was because of out of control spending. Let's review. In just 60 days Obama has spent $5,000 billion dollars counting the trillion new dollars he had printed. He had to print it because China is getting tired of assuming our debts. Perhaps you don't have children or grandchildren but most of us do. And we are concerned about their future. That's more money than has been spent by all Presidents combined since George Washington. What is scary is the fact that he hasn't even got to health care and he promises much more spending. You may not get this either but our government is growing rapidly since Obama took over. The larger it grows, the more spending must be done to accomodate it. Yes, we are concerned about this as well. I won't yet say Obama is a socialist but I am concerned about it. There is no question he wants as much control as he can get. Then fairness doctorine which would give him more control over talk radio, He seems to like control over big business, banks and other enterprise. Rather than appointing a verified non-partisan commitee to regulate he insists on having the government regulate it. He favors larger government which gives him more control over private citizen's livlihood. The question of gun control keeps coming up and as soon as it is quieted down another approach comes up to control it in some other way. Amnesty keeps coming up which would put as many as 35 million votes in the hands of democrats. That sounds like more control to me. So don't tell us we need not be concerned with socialism. We need to be very concerned about socialism. Every one of these policies are socialistic oriented policies.
Then when we go into issues of who Obama favors, Wright, Ayers, Koh, and the list goes on and on. I'm not so sure how much Obama favors Castro and Chavez but I am concerned about it. By the way; a lot of Americans are beginning to be concerned about it. Just saying!

To Tristan Benz:
You have made an excellent point in the way you did the analogy between legislators and media. I have been pondering this exact point for some time now and could not agree withn you more. If we can't hold media accountable this country is in big trouble. This really became visible during the last elections and so far nothing has changed. Glad to see sombody put it into print as well as you did. Good job!
Marauder| 4.19.09 @ 11:39PM
Susan Roesgen proved that while the mainstream media used to be respectable and honest, they're lately just the equivalent of shills at a carnival sideshow.
The guy that made the "teabagging" joke lowered their status even more, down to that of the hawkers standing outside strip joints.
It's sad that we had reliable sources of news at one time, but they've denigrated their status so badly. We now know what it was like for Soviet citizens to have to listen to Tass and Pravda with all their propaganda.

Is Fox news biased ?, or is that a silly question ? ,
where's that article ?
Bias Fox News Lover| 4.20.09 @ 11:21AM
CNN BIASED? Should this question really be asked by Fox. So what if they are, isn't it a hypocritical of fox to be questioning some other channel's affiliations. I love you Fox News Channel, but it is time for Fox to come out of the closet (sorry about that) and throw out the charade of being a balance network. Show pride in your affiliations with Karl Rove and every other republican. Why are we trying to convince these left wingers about being a fair & balanced network? We have enough support. Let's party.

I remember exactly when I started watching news cable CNN. It was when Desert Storm started. The media coverage was delivered by Bernard Shaw . I remember when quit watching CNN it was 01/20/09. The coverage of the inaugeration made me sick. Especially Soledad Obrien, she has absolutely no command of history or the constitution. I used to like Anderson Cooper but hes just as slobbering as the rest of liberal leaning hacks. I live in Maryland (half hour from the White House)and have watched news coverage since I was 7, I'm 54. News coverage here is always political, but the current liberal leaning stuff is just flat out unacceptable behavior. There is no doubt in my mind the agenda was to "do what it takes" to get Obama elected regardless of the true FACTS. I believe this is TREASON of the american public regardless of standing.
John| 4.20.09 @ 4:14PM
Americans need to watch these guys so you can make a list of the people that advertise on these liberal networks. Then make sure they know you will no longer use the products and services they offer. I know it's hard but as responsible citizens we need to do it. Cut off their money and cutoff their power.

CNN is probably the most biased in the media world. We saw it during the presidential elections, and now for the "Tea Parties". I believe they have a hidden agenda with this cabinet, and they're going to force feed their viewers with what they want them to think. Fox news goes against that way of thinking, so, now CNN criticizes how Fox delivers the news. CNN= Losers!.

@ Bias Fox News Lover:
Fox's "coverage" is fair and balanced, not their employees. That's the common misconception.
We all know that Fox has a proclivity for hiring more moderate to right-leaning employees to deliver the news, just like MSNBC, CNN, ABC, HLN, and PBS hire a majority of left-of-middle to far-left employees.
The difference isn't in the networks' respective personnel; it's in their actual coverage.
Very rarely do hard-line Fox reporters "pick a side" and show favoritism. It does happen, but not often at all.
The other networks, however, fail to provide balance on any issue. For example, even with the petty commentary shows - we'll use O'Reilly and Hannity vs. Maddow and Olbermann - do these shows compete on the same level:
Hannity is only a few months without Colmes, who was THE SINGLE MOST LIBERAL person to ever be on air, besides Olbermann, and had equal speaking time for his duration. Now Hannity brings on opposition regularly. O'Reilly speaks to a handful of people who disagree with him every single night.
Olbermann and Maddow won't have anyone on their shows with even the slightest whiff of dissenting opinion. ... They're the same "type" of show, but one network even attempts to balance commentary, while the other couldn't care less.
Independent studies consistently show that Fox reports evenly. This myth about "Fox didn't show fair coverage to anti-war protesters" is insane. It's only that people don't save those clips and upload them to YouTube because it doesn't help their point of view very much...
Just like citing Fox's fair and balanced coverage of the Presidential Election won't help the haters' cause. Independent studies find that Fox ran 40/40 coverage for both McCain and Obama during the Election, while MSNBC ran 73% negative for McCain and only 13% negative for Obama.
Oh, that's only one instance, you say? The Presidential Election is THE time when networks need to swallow their bias and report fairly! The American people deserve that much. Instead, two networks - CNN and MSNBC - decided to take it upon themselves to effect change in America, rather than report the news.
Now you scream that "Hannity picks Obama apart every single night!" Yes, and he also - willingly! - brings on people that pick him apart about it every single night. That's where the "balance" comes in. The "fairness" isn't what happens so much as what doesn't happen; i.e. Fox won't insult Americans with sexual insults like "teabaggers" and attempt to call people "racists."
Fair and balanced? It's not even up for debate. The statistics are in and they are clear. They're #1 for THAT very reason. I mean, think of it: Obama won the election; democrats cleaned up two years prior; but Fox, which is supposedly right-leaning in their coverage, is number one? Huh? That would be the world's biggest contradiction.
