Alarmists run both hot and cold.
Our dreadful destiny was that we were either going to starve to death or be buried by advancing glaciers in a new Ice Age.
The alleged villain was global cooling, coming faster than anyone had predicted. It wouldn’t be all that long before polar bears would be rummaging through the aisles of Macy’s in Manhattan.
That was the dire warning by Newsweek’s science editor, Peter Gwynne, in the magazine’s April 28, 1975 issue.
“There are ominous signs that the Earth’s weather patterns have begun to change dramatically and that these changes may portend a drastic decline in food production — with serious political implications for just about every nation on Earth,” explained Gwynne. “The drop in food output could begin quite soon, perhaps only 10 years from now,” i.e., 1985.
In fact, the opposite occurred. World food output and per capita world food production both increased steadily in the decades before and after Gwynne’s prophecy of drastic food scarcities.
Gwynne cited top climate experts to support his premise of global cooling: “A survey completed last year by Dr. Murray Mitchell of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, NOAA, reveals a drop of half a degree in average ground temperatures in the Northern Hemisphere between 1945 and 1968. According to George Kukla of Columbia University, satellite photos indicated a sudden, large increase in Northern Hemisphere snow cover in the winter of 1971-72. And a study released last month by two NOAA scientists notes that the amount of sunshine reaching the ground in the continental U.S. diminished by 1.3% between 1964 and 1972.”
Interestingly, the aforementioned era of alleged global cooling in the Northern Hemisphere, 1945 to 1968, is the exact period that saw unprecedented increases in overall manufacturing in the Northern Hemisphere and, in particular, huge increases in the number of motor vehicles on the roads, as well as huge increases in the size of the fins on an ever-growing number of ever-lengthening Coupe de Villes.
It’s odd that no one at Harvard got a federal grant to study the obvious correlation between the sales of Cadillacs and the well-being of polar bears, the clear link between bigger fins, falling temperatures and more ice between 1945 and 1968.
In any case, Newsweek’s Gwynne saw an avalanche of evidence for global cooling and a quickly growing scientific consensus: “The evidence in support of these predictions has now begun to accumulate so massively that meteorologists are hard-pressed to keep up with it.”
On top of citing a report from the National Academy of Sciences about how temperature changes would “force economic and social adjustments on a worldwide scale,” Gwynne highlighted a professor who had figured out that we were already a sixth of the way to all becoming ice sculptures: “Reid Bryson of the University of Wisconsin points out that the Earth’s average temperature during the great Ice Ages was only about seven degrees lower than during its warmest eras — and that the present decline has taken the planet about a sixth of the way toward the Ice Age average.”
Gwynne additionally pointed to the increasingly frigid winters between 1600 and 1900 — “years when the Thames used to freeze so solidly that Londoners roasted oxen on the ice and when iceboats sailed the Hudson River almost as far south as New York City.” And, funny, even with no Hummers at the malls to warm things up a bit, the ice on the Thames somehow just melted away.
Nearly a year before Newsweek’s ominous warning about global cooling, Time magazine was beating the same drum, running “Another Ice Age?” in its June 24, 1974 issue.
“However widely the weather varies from place to place and time to time, when meteorologists take an average of temperatures around the globe they find that the atmosphere has been growing gradually cooler for the past three decades,” reported Time. “The trend shows no indication of reversing. Climatological Cassabdras are becoming increasingly apprehensive, for the weather aberrations they are studying may be the harbinger of another ice age.”
The evidence, said Time, was everywhere, “from the unexpected persistence and thickness of pack ice in the waters around Iceland to the southward migration of a warmth-loving armadillo from the Midwest.”
In addition to the traveling armadillos, reported Time, satellite weather data for the Northern Hemisphere showed that “the area of the ice and snow cover had suddenly increased by 12 percent in 1971 and the increase has persisted ever since. Areas of Baffin Island in the Canadian Arctic, for example, were once totally free of any snow in summer; now they are covered year round.”

Doesn't the planet get warmer before it freezes over? Isn't that the whole point of global warming at the end of the cycle? Seems the more observable trend to non-scientists is erratic weather.

Repeating Mr. Obama once again...
"We can't drive our SUVs and eat as much as we want and keep our homes on 72 degrees at all times," he stated, "and then just expect that other countries are going to say OK."
Man, I just hope that one sentence gets crammed down his throat every time an American writes about him, or speaks about him!
TO HELL WITH WHAT OTHER COUNTRIES SAY OK ABOUT .
The difference, friends is that at least up to now, we have been winners and they hve been loosers!
The only thing bad about 72 degrees is that too many people have the same number in their IQ ratings. (Yes Virginia, that is the proverbial room temperature IQ.)
So in effect, what Mr. Obama is saying to Americans: "Every other country.....compared to the United States.....is a looser! Go ye therefore and do likewise, Americans."
Ladies and gentlemen,
That is frighteningly stupid!!!
Or...........a frightening insight into the man's determination to wreck our country.

"Interestingly, the aforementioned era of alleged global cooling in the Northern Hemisphere, 1945 to 1968, is the exact period that saw unprecedented increases in overall manufacturing in the Northern Hemisphere and, in particular, huge increases in the number of motor vehicles on the roads,..."
Actually, the period 1947 trhough 1977 was a period known to meteorologists as a "negative PDO (Pacific Decadal Oscillation)". The PDO (which was formally defined in 1997) oscillates between the negative (cold) mode and positive (warm) mode every 30-35 years. What oscillates are sea-surface temperatures. The PDO is located in the North Pacific, and is a long term residual of another oscillation -ENSO (El Nino Southern Oscillation). When the PDO is positive, El Nino events dominate our climate; when the PDO is negative, La Nina events dominate our climate.
The PDO was negative from 1947-1977. During this period some of the coldest temps of the 20th century were recorded worldwide. From 1977 through 2007, the PDO was positive, and likewise some of the warmest global temperatures of the 20th Century were recorded.
The Pacific Ocean acts as a huge thermostat for the globe. It absorbs and transports tropical air masses (as well as tropical waters) poleward, and its fluccuations determine how much warming or cooling occurs across the polar source regions. During El Nino events, global temps tend to increase, and various semi-permanent pressure systems are either strengthened or weakened. Some area see less precipitation; others see warming. Likewise duirng La Nina periods, the globe tends to cool.
We have just begun to discover how important the Pacific is. One interesting and perhaps key factor in looking at long term climate variation is tropical cloud cover. And some astronomers believe that cloud cover varies with solar activity.

And I remember a proposal to sprinkle charcoal over the glaciers to make them melt. Today, it's to paint our houses and roads white. The prescription changes in detail, but the role of liberals is the same: to rule all they behold.

Have you heard of "Chemtrails?"
The first time that I heard of a chemtrail I thought I was listening to a tin foil hat nut case. Then I looked up chemtrails on google. What the warmists have done (been doing) for several years now is to mix very finely divided aluminum in jet fuel thereby dispersing aluminum into the upper atmosphere. The idea is to increase the albedo (reflectivity) of the planet and reduce global warming.
Now, this aluminum suspended in the upper atmosphere is persistent, it can stay up there for years and more is being added daily.
What we're dealing with here is a collection of over-indulged, petulant brats that have found daddy's gun. To do something like this chemtrail thing with the deliberately falsified and incomplete data that the warmists have is wreckless.
KyMouse| 12.18.09 @ 10:54AM
I've heard long jet contrails called chemtrails, but a meteorologist friend explained to me that the long contrails that remain visible for hours are the result of increasing humidity, which makes the condensation trails take longer to evaporate.

1) There was first in the 1970's the global cooling scam (see e.g. Newsweek April 28 1975 on the Internet); the government-paid scientists (90% of them are rejects of private enterprise) recommended to fight the new ice age by sending our war planes to cover the polar ice with soot in order to increase solar heat and so prevent crushing of New York skyscrapers by the new glaciers;
2) When that did not work we had the global warming hoax in the 1990's, proclaimed by mainly the same government-paid scientists (Dr. Hansen of the NOAA, for example); to prevent the massive heating, fires, flooding of coastal cities, disappearance of Florida, California, and Caribbean islands, massive hurricanes, global famine, and other catastrophic events we should nationalize oil and gas and coal and electricity companies;
3) after 11 years of considerable cooling we are now faced with the climate change flimflam where whatever happens with our climate we should nationalize oil and gas and coal and electricity companies; and why not our banks, car and insurance companies while we are at it. To prevent this catastrophe the best vehicle presumably is international agreements enforced by the United Nations world government.
As for the influence of carbon dioxide as a greenhouse gas: on a normal day the atmosphere contains 20,000 ppm (parts per million) of water vapor and about 300 ppm of carbon dioxide. The government-paid scientists say that an increase of 100 ppm of CO2 over the next 50 years will result in a catastrophic warming. The thermal absorptivity of water vapor is 4 times larger than that of carbon dioxide; it follows that the CO2 increase will increase the overall thermal absorptivity of the mixture by about 1/8 of one percent. The production of methane from livestock flatulence and the rotting swamps (called "wetlands" by the environmentalists) vastly surpasses the influence of human-produced CO2.
There is the Global Warming Petition Project (see Internet) where 31,478 US independent scientists declared that there is no anthropogenic (human-caused) global warming; of these 9,029 are scientists with PhD degrees. Our environmentalists tried to sabotage this effort by submiiting phony names with phoney degrees - and then claimed the whole effort by the Petition scientists was a fraud. It took us 3 years and a lot of private money to verify the credentials of all the signatories and clean up the Petition of those saboteurs. See also Manhattan Declaration with more such signatories, plus a large number of scientific groups from other countries who state the same.
I am one of these signatories, MS and PhD degrees from UCLA, with majors in thermodynamics and heat & mass transfer.
I think to fight this communist attempt to secure a permanent hold on power should not be fought on the narrow grounds of more taxes - that is the losing proposition; where about 50% of the population is on some kind of welfare we will always be outvoted. The battle should be fought and won on the firm scientific basis.
4) And now we have "cap™" power grab.
SCAM - HOAX - FLIMFLAM - POWER GRAB!!!
