Roaring echoes of Reagan fuel a grassroots fire -- and big bike ride.
Rhonda Lee Welsch has a vision. "When we go back to Washington next year, there's going be a lot of Harleys," the Florida activist said. "And those Harleys make a lot of noise."
Making noise may not seem like much of a goal to D.C. political strategists, but if thousands of thundering Harleys roll up in front of the White House as part of a national Tea Party march on Washington, Welsch's vision might make more impact than Beltway wizards imagine.
Like many others now suddenly active in the conservative grassroots, Welsch is a newcomer to politics. A divorced mom who has spent most of her working career in the construction and hospitality industries, she's been an eyewitness to the devastation wrought by the recent economic collapse. Florida's unemployment rate is at 11.2 percent, but that official statistic may understate the severity of the downturn.
"Everything's come to a screeching halt," Welsch says of construction work for small contractors in coastal Volusia County, where she lives. With business slow, she began paying more attention to politics, and soon found herself actively involved in the Tea Party movement. A breakthrough moment, she says, was when she joined the 9/12 March on D.C. and attended a seminar on organizing led by veteran conservative fundraiser Richard Viguerie.
Welsch returned to Florida and went to work on her vision: Bike Week Freedom Rally, scheduled during late February's annual motorcycle gathering in Daytona Beach. She's already booked the Volusia County Fairgrounds for the event, hired a rock band for musical entertainment, and is now in the process of raising more money and arranging speakers.
At a Tea Party last month in Orlando, Welsch handed out flyers promoting the Daytona rally. She sees bikers as a constituency instinctively opposed to big government. "Their motto is 'Ride Free, Live Free,'" she says, and getting them involved in the political process could make a difference.
Her turn toward activism has brought some surprises. She was shocked to discover that one TV personality wanted a $25,000 speaking fee plus first-class travel from New York to appear at the Bike Week event. "What's he going to do with that money?" Welsch says skeptically.
Skepticism toward big-money big shots is natural to a grassroots movement that sprang up nearly overnight in February and mushroomed in the span of a few months to bring hundreds of thousands to Washington in September. And one of the biggest big shots feeling the grassroots heat is Florida Gov. Charlie Crist.
In February, Crist joined President Obama at a rally in Fort Myers, Fla., to promote the president's $789 billion economic stimulus plan. That deficit-spending measure ranks high on the list of grievances for fiscal-conservative Tea Party people like Welsch.
Three months after Crist's embrace of Obama, howls of outrage erupted when the National Republican Senatorial Committee endorsed the governor for Florida's 2010 Senate race, 15 months ahead of the GOP primary. Erick Erickson of RedState.com declared the NRSC endorsement "wholly unacceptable," and the backlash against the national GOP's interference catapulted Crist's Senate rival, former state House Speaker Marco Rubio, to the status of grassroots rock star.
Despite the fundraising advantages of being the establishment's choice, Crist has seen his poll numbers sag, while Rubio has surged. Crist was also recently hurt by revelations about his close association with Scott Rothstein, who is facing federal charges of defrauding investors in what prosecutors say was a $1 billion Ponzi scheme.
Asked her preference in the Senate primary, Welsch is emphatic. "Rubio, definitely. No question about it," she says. She's considered inviting him to speak at the Bike Week rally, but worries about making the event "too political."
Welsch's own analysis of the contemporary political landscape is not limited to narrow grievances or partisan squabbles. "It's a systemic problem," she says, discussing the top-down approach of leaders in both parties who seem indifferent to the concerns of ordinary Americans.
Since becoming politically active, Welsch has discovered a talent for organizing that suits what she calls her "tactile… hands-on" nature. Previously a mere spectator in politics, her participation limited to voting, she now regrets not becoming involved sooner. "This is what I should have been doing all along," she says.
Welsch's determination to make a difference recalls the can-do spirit of active citizenship that Ronald Reagan celebrated in his first inaugural address. "I do not believe in a fate that will fall on us no matter what we do. I do believe in a fate that will fall on us if we do nothing."
Doing nothing is not an option for Rhonda Welsch anymore, and she knows many others who feel the same way. "We need to form a human chain -- I just want to be one link in that chain."
Reagan was "our last true conservative president," says Welsch, who sees herself as part of a larger effort to revive Reagan's vision of freedom. And when those Harleys come roaring up Pennsylvania Avenue next year, that vision will make a lot of noise.

Go Rubio!!
Alan Brooks| 12.9.09 @ 6:07PM
Fine, stage a latter day March on Rome.
However, in January '11, the result will be the same: as in '95, a techno-blarney Speaker of the House pontificates until it wears thin after a few years.
In '13, the result will be the same: a compromised anti-conservative Republican loses to the incumbent.
You are now reduced to pouring new wine into old wineskins. You are just reacting to Obama.
First step is for Newt, being the brainiest, to admit "my futurism is a warmed over late '60s canard"; then, after he gets that off his chest, he can go on from there. He will be a New Creature in Conservatism. Born Again.
Alan Brooks| 12.9.09 @ 6:15PM
that is, in '13, Obama is sworn in again, because a Reagan can't run for potus anymore. Only Bushes, Doles, and McCains. The last straw was when you nominated Dole instead of Kemp-- the dems haven't done anything that foolish since Carter was chosen rather than Mondale-- yes, even Mondale was an improvement over Jimmuh.
I think of politics as being like hunting:
a hunter is more liable to shoot himself in the foot than he is to shoot another hunter.

SonsOfLibertyRiders have a vision too ... Harley's not required [tho' do appear to be in the majority]. We are calling all American Patriots who ride. Ride with us now before its too late. We have no colors, we are non-territorial and we are not a motorcycle club. The Sons of Liberty Riders will be in Washington next year w/ the ranks @ almost 1700 and still growing ... you better believe Washington will rumble! Feel free to join us at SonsOfLibertyRiders.com.

No, Harley's aren't necessary- you just have to love America and want to join the fight for her survival. Please contact me @ bikeweekfreedomrally.com

I LOVE this idea! I hope Sarah Palin joins the rally and rides into DC on a Harley :)

JohnD| 12.9.09 @ 9:25AM
This would be an interesting consituency to see mobilized. These biker-types are pretty motivated, proactive personality types, who don't take things lying down.
It would be hard for the mainstream media to ignore the rolling thunder of 10's of thousands of Harley's roaring up Pennsylvania Avenue. Not only would it be great publicity for the cause, and a real spectacle, but, the added benefit of this would be that, well, SEIU's and ACORN's thugs had better stay home for this Tea Party, if you know what I mean. . .
Eilana Caswell| 12.10.09 @ 12:38PM
We have become mobilized ... join us. We'd love to have you. I'm quite sure out of the thousands already signed up and working towards 'change' [via peaceful and legal avenues] there will be somebody that will let Sarah Palin ride with them.
KyMouse| 12.9.09 @ 9:48AM
Here's some good news for a change, from my own state: Last night, in the special Senate election in central Kentucky's 14th District, Jimmy Higdon (Republican) trounced Jodie Haydon (Democrat) handily, despite all of the money and power that the Dems, including our governor, put behind Haydon. Higdon had the support of Kentucky Right to Life Association, among other pro-life and conservative groups.
U.S. Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) said that Higdon's victory may be a bellwether beyond Kentucky's borders. From his lips to God's ears!
Quartermaster| 12.9.09 @ 7:55PM
Now, if we could rid of the squishy McConnell and get some one with a spine as Senate GOP leader, we might start doing better.

I would love to see those harleys on the capitol steps on swearing in day for the new congress next year.

This would be a wonderful expression and perhaps the sound would carry into the capitol chambers. They try to ignore the public including the 9-12 march, but the sound of a few thousand Harleys might get some attention. The more noise from the more people the better. Those people inside need to know that time is running out on them and their agenda.

I want the dome over the capitol to vibrate and the elitists in side to shudder with fear because We the People ar ecoming to Washington and the day when we just camp out on the mall is nno far away- that is our building - the White House is our house- we own it-we paid for it with the blood of Patriotic men who would never allow the hideous crimes of the current administration to exist- ENOUGH!
WE WILL TAKE AMERICA BACK!
Feb. 27th & 28th at the Volusia County Fairgrounds we will give you a glimpse of our passion and determination. Nov.2nd is Judgment day and the pieces of fecal matter who call themselves leaders aught to start packing right now and do themselves a favor! C-YA!

Better bring money to pay all those "loud pipe" tickets the Feds WILL issue.
As long time Harley rider (04 Road King) I'd be there if I could but DC is a fur piece from Northern Ca. How about arranging similar rallies at state capitols on the same day? Sacramento is only a six hour run for me and I'm sure I could bring a contingent from this territory.
http://www.conversationsaround.....ogspot.com
Al Adab| 12.9.09 @ 11:03AM
Matt, you are right, they will issue tickets. The response is not to pay. It is high time Liberty loving people refuse to play the game any longer. That can take many forms, and will, but eventually they will be heard.
Molon Labe.
JohnD| 12.9.09 @ 11:15AM
Matt:
It would be the Capitol Police or the DC Police issuing the tickets, no? In that case, tear them up because I doubt California and DC DMVs have reciprocity.
That said, I doubt that they can write 50,000 bikers tickets, and I doubt that 50,000 bikers will stand for even one being ticketed.
rhonda Lee| 12.14.09 @ 10:27AM

IMMEDIATE TERMINATION of the 'SECRETARY'
Now 70, I have seen my share of government incompetence but NEVER anything to match this. It is BEYOND comprehension.
There are three remedies:
1. Immediately commence impeachment of Obama for gross failure in and of his office.
2.Commence Massive Civil Disobedience.
3.Should the government, executive and congress, continue in its abuse of the Constitution, Civil War is an option.
FOOLS were numbered among the population at the time of the War for Independence but they and the threat to the nation were put down through great loss of life and violence.
Our political establishment has the Constitutional means of stopping the the insanity. Should they not do so, the people have the RIGHT and DUTY to do so.

Only Republicans could try to portray people who can afford 50,000 dollar motorcycles as some kind of 'rebels against the system, man. ' Most bikers have always been conservative, and their minds are about as 'free' as their ties to the Conservative Agenda let them be. I ride alone, therefore I am truly free.
Matt Morehouse| 12.9.09 @ 11:49PM
$50,000 motorcycles? A brand new top of the line Harley costs maybe $25,000. Oh sure there are custom bikes that cost 50 t0 100 thousand dollars but I doubt you will see any on our ride.
You are correct; most bikers are Conservative as are most hunters, shooters, soldiers, businessmen, and others of mental acuity. You would do well to ride with us, and you would be welcome. I doubt you will find many Republicans but be assured you will be in the good company of Conservatives.
We ride not to be free but to stay free.

Born to Be Tired here with my new username. Matt (and Baker) I appreciate being corrected on Harley prices, and especially the news that to many bikers, being conservative doesn't have to mean joining the Party or agreeing with all its policies (from my experience I think you guys prefer a different type of 'party' ;). I say I ride alone because, while I strongly support many Lefty views (a socialized medical system, 'big government' projects like infrastructure works and space exploration, a total ban on the death penalty, anti-war in Iraq, etc.) I also see many of its shortcomings (many lefties refuse to budge on their opinions or admit they can be wrong, some abuse the 'welfare system', and quite a few are into a lot of trendy artsy stuff simply for the sake of its shock value, and I find that false). Or put another way, I can see what damage the meat industry is doing to the environment, but damn, do I love a good steak!— tofu burgers just won't cut it for me. I appreciate the offer to ride, you seem like one who's at least open-minded and this very polarized world could use a whole lot more of that at the moment.

This is being worked on as we speak, it will be fun.
Only thing is by that time it will be too late. Our fight will be at the precinct level. We need to get ready and take over the republican party. Everyone needs to become a deligate. Find out when your caucus is and go with a plan. It only takes 5-10 people of the same mind to put our deligate in and then we have a vioce in what will happen.
Protests are great but will not give you a vioce.
This is still a country OF,BY and FOR the People
Notice the second part BY, what does that mean?
To me it means that I have to do something, I am responsible for wht is happening, I need to have a vioce in who is going to represent me and my neighborhood.
The real power comes with our precinct delegates. We can remove the BAD apples in congress but we need to be involved, not just in protests.

Subject: THE ANT AND THE GRASSHOPPER
THE ANT AND THE GRASSHOPPER Two Different Versions…. Two Different Morals
——————————————————————————– OLD VERSION
The ant works hard in the withering heat all summer long, building his house and laying up supplies for the winter. The grasshopper thinks the ant is a fool and laughs and dances and plays the summer away. Come winter, the ant is warm and well fed. The grasshopper has no food or shelter, so he dies out in the cold.
MORAL OF THE STORY: Be responsible for yourself!
——————————————————————————– MODERN VERSION
The ant works hard in the withering heat and the rain all summer long, building his house and laying up supplies for the winter.
The grasshopper thinks the ant is a fool and laughs and dances and plays the summer away. Come winter, the shivering grasshopper calls a press conference and demands to know why the ant should be allowed to be warm and well fed while he is cold and starving.
CBS, NBC , PBS, CNN, and ABC show up to provide pictures of the shivering grasshopper next to a video of the ant in his comfortable home with a table filled with food.
America is stunned by the sharp contrast. How can this be, that in a country of such wealth, this poor grasshopper is allowed to suffer so? Kermit the Frog appears on Oprah with the grasshopper and everybody cries when they sing, ‘It’s Not Easy Being Green.’
ACORN stages a demonstration in front of the ant’s house where the news stations film the group singing, We shall overcome. Then Rev. Jeremiah Wright has the group kneel down to pray to God for the grasshopper’s sake.
President Obama condemns the ant and blames President Bush, President Reagan, Christopher Columbus, and the Pope for the grasshopper’s plight.
Nancy Pelosi & Harry Reid exclaim in an interview with Larry King that the ant has gotten rich off the back of the grasshopper, and both call for an immediate tax hike on the ant to make him pay his fair share.
Finally, the EEOC drafts the Economic Equity & Anti-Grasshopper Act retroactive to the beginning of the summer.
Andy Stern and SEIU, SUE the Ant, and with the support of Eric Holder Set a Court date for The ant and He is fined for failing to hire a proportionate number of SEIU UNION GREEN BUGS and, having nothing left to pay his retroactive taxes, his home is confiscated by the Government Green Czar and given to the grasshopper.
The story ends as we see the grasshopper and his free-loading friends finishing up the last bits of the ants food while the government house he is in, which, as you recall, just happens to be the ant’s old house, crumbles around them because the grasshopper doesn’t maintain it.
The ant has disappeared in the snow, never to be seen again?
Tune in Next November to Read Results of Search for the Ant.
The grasshopper is found dead in a drug related incident, and the house, now abandoned, is taken over by a gang of spiders From MEXIKALIFORNICA who terrorize the ramshackle, once prosperous and once peaceful, neighborhood.

Senator Alexander,
Please Note: I am mad as hell and I know I am not the only one.
I know you are educated people and are not stupid.
Therefore I can only deduce that this is intentional which by the way makes it far more egregious.
The government's takeover of America has to stop now. This push to ram stuff down our throats has to stop.
Healtcare reform must be stopped. We all know its about the insurance and big pharma money.
You're not kidding anybody. Unless you are willing to subject yourself and your family to it I am against it.
If it's not good enough for our elected servants how can it be good enough for us?
Violating the spirit and laws of our constitution must stop as does trashing any American who may not agree with the administration's policies.
You are just alienating more people that way.
The skewed numbers the government puts out to pacify the people must stop.
Printing dollars must stop. It's time to defend the dollar. The Fed must be audited now, not two years from now.
Barney Frank's new bill on financial services must be stopped.
Isnt it special that Goldman had it's best year ever on the taxpayers dime? Favoritism must stop along with the merging of Washington and Wall Street.
The Goldman Sachs, Blackrock, Pimco and Warren Buffet's of the world with their sweetheart deals need to stay out of government's business.
Buffet can buy stock on the open market like everyone else. He's wealthy not special and not I question how he obtained that wealth.
Bailouts must stop and clawbacks needs to occur. Giving taxpayer money to Wall Street and foreigners must stop.
Taking over GM while shafting the stock and bondholders, ignoring, the law so that they can build factories in China on our dime must stop.
You gave $25 billion to bail out citigroup who in turn lends $8 billion to Dubai who now defaults. What right did they have to use taxpayer money in Dubai?
Are you people kidding me?
Not everybody is watching American Idol or gives a damn about the Madoff diversion you created to take our minds off the true frauds that were going on right under our noses.
Financial fear mongering & terrorism must stop. No one in their right mind believed that if the banks failed the world would end.
Rewarding the spendthrifts and punishing the savers must stop.
Privatizing the gains and socializing the losses must stop.
I watched Bernake tell you in Congress to get stuffed. He wasn’t going to tell you where the money went.
You standing for that tells me it is all a dog and pony show for the masses. Well the masses are finally waking up.
Greed, lies and corruption from Wall Street, To big to fail Banks, and big business must stop.
Bernake and Geithner probably need to stand trial instead of patting them on the back.
They failed miserably and were most probably complicit in causing the depression we are in deliberately.
Are you even remotely aware that people dubbed him "Turbo Tax Timmy".
You expect people to want to pay their taxes when the head of the IRS didn’t pay his and blames his software?
Has Washington no shame or pride?
The SEC needs to be dismantled for failure to act when faced with overwhelming evidence of fraud.
Two sets of rule: one for the favored and one for the little people needs to stop.
Sheila Bair most likely needs to be fired or at the least investigated for not using Prompt Corrective Action prior to failing banks.
Violating Black letter law must stop.
Outsourcing American jobs to $2Hr workers needs to stop.
Politicians taking money from special interest groups must stop. We know you'd never compromise your vote and that you're laughing all the way to the bank.
The Global warming scam must stop. Cap and trade a la Enron must stop. The ONE WORLD ORDER of SOROS and the EU with the UN, Cap and Trade, Carbon Scam, along with Al Gore, to What? Sell Our Sovereignty? Make Us Slaves to the Socialist's? When Is Enough, Enough? This “IS”, TOO MUCH!
29.9% Credit card rates must stop.
Amnesty for illegal aliens must stop.
Treason, is just that. Treason. The Free Flow of Information Act passed through the Senate Judiciary Committee? Makes it LEGAL?
No one Should be Above the Law, NOT THE MEDIA, Not the Sitting President! Stop Hiding the Truth! Produce the Birth Certificate! Or Step Down, You “Will Be Impeached” with Our Control of the Congress and Senate After Nov, 2010!
Calling me a consumer must stop. I am not a consumer....I am an American.
Where I live the people I interact with have had it. No one believes the garbage and lies coming out of Wall street or Washington anymore.
Confidence is not coming back anytime soon in my opinion.
It's out in the open for all to see now.
I think it has become crystal to many more than you know that most in DC are in bed with Wall Street and big business as well as totally in it
for themselves and certainly not the people they were elected to represent.
Many people I know are going galt, starving the beast and looking to take their money out of the banks and or the country.
They are buying guns, gold and storing food, growing gardens, leaving the stock market.
I fear you are pushing the average person beyond their limits. Where Sir is YOURS?
For Your OATH of Office: To Defend the Constitution and the People from All Enemies, Foreign or Domestic?
Is this want you people want? Are you so far from reality you don’t see it?
I fear for my country, my family and my fellow Americans.
This is not the America I know nor want to live in anymore. Good luck to you all with your current game plan.
When you have nothing left in this country of productive tax payers and no one left to support it, you or your salaries,
Pensions and Cadillac healthcare you can just have your buddy Bernake print up some more of that fine toilet paper for you.
Maybe then you will wake up to find out that you really have killed the goose that laid the golden eggs but it will be too late.

I wish Ms. Welsch the best in her quest. I just hope she gets a little more educated on her stances lest she be bowled over.
Reading this article it sounds like she does not know that Pres. Reagan signed one of the largest tax increases in history, supported abortion rights legislation (and signed off on them as Governor of CA) and was vocally supportive of 'socialized' medicine.
Unfortunately, while her actions are admirable, I feel as though she (like many) hold up these 'heroes' while not really having an understanding of what they were for.

For men always fit the occasion if there is any doubt about what a man should wear. Sometimes an invitation is not very specific about the www.herveleger-outlet.com

I’ll have a Poptropica full written walkthrough very soon, but in the meantime, here are some answers to some of the frequently asked questions about Mythology Island. Having trouble? Post a question in the comments and I’ll try to answer it!
Getting Hercules to Help You Poptropica
Hercules won’t help you until you have all five items from Zeus’ quest. Once you have the five items, bring them to Athena. Zeus will appear and steal them. The big jerk! Once this happens, talk to Athena and she will tell you that Hercules will help you. You’ll need to have the magic mirror from Aphrodite because Hercules doesn’t want to have to walk. He’s so lazy!
Getting the Hydra Scale poptropica
You can see how to do this in the videos, but basically you need to jump up when the Hydra is about to strike. He will rear one of his heads back to attack and his eyes will bulge out. poptropica
When this happens, jump up in the air and then try to land on top of his head. That head will get knocked out. When all five heads get knocked out, the Hydra will be asleep and you can click on him to get one of the scales. poptropica
