The Oil Shortage Hoax

Mr. Obama’s energy policy is based upon a fraud. He should call it off.

There was a staggeringly important article on the front page of the Wall Street Journal on Tuesday. Briefly, it said that the immense run up in oil prices in 2008, from roughly $33 a barrel to roughly $150 per barrel was not caused by an oil shortage, was not caused by an immense upsurge in demand from China and India and Brazil, not caused by bandits in Nigeria.

This finding was from President Obama’s Commodity Futures Trading Commission, hardly a mouthpiece of Big Oil.

The staggering 2008 run up in price, which beggared hundreds of millions of people throughout the world, was caused by the sinister machinations of a few dozen oil traders and speculators in the commodity pits and lush offices of hedge funds and investment banks. (Think Goldman, Sachs at its worst.) The shortage, which terrified innocent people and literally killed the U.S. automotive industry, made a few dozen or maybe a few hundred people very rich. It also made the nation believe we actually faced a major oil shortage. (I was briefly taken in before I realized that nothing in the supply demand situation had changed even remotely enough to justify the kind of price moon shot we had been through. When I wrote that the spike was the work of some oil speculators and I knew their names, one of them sent me threatening e-mails.)

This belief — that we faced an impending end of the supply of oil — was a huge part of the motivation to turn to “green power” sources like wind and solar, to look for ways, even quite radical ways, to control energy use. This totally fraudulent “fact” of rapidly depleting oil resources helped Mr. Barack Obama get elected and is now helping him get his radical cap and trade and energy control bill through Congress. This bill, largely turning U.S. energy production and use upside down and saddling the nation with innumerable regulations — down to small details like having federal regulators mark up or down every home up for resale based on every usage — was based upon a fraud.

Now what? Will someone wake the heck up and say that Mr. Obama is putting through his massive agenda of control in the energy sector based on a hoax? Will Mr. Obama say he’s re-thinking the whole scheme?

If there is no urgent or even semi-urgent need to control oil use (or natural gas usage, since natural gas is now in staggering oversupply), why reorganize an American energy industry that works extremely well already?

Will anyone in the administration get up on his hind legs and tell the truth: the Obama energy plan is based on a “fact” that is now shown to be a fiction? And will anyone have the guts to call the whole nightmare of regulation off?

The same game was played with dairy commodities. A huge leap in prices last year has turned into a 40% drop in farm gate pay this year--with little relief for consumers at retail! A handful of big players (Kraft, Dean foods; including pols and USDA bureaucrats) walk off with millions--leaving a mess behind.

What about thew vast oil reserves of sweet crude lying under CO,WY,SD,ND estimated to be larger than the combines oil fields of the Middle East. enough it has been estimated to supply all our needs for the next 2041 years!!!!. This I might add does not include all the Alaskan reserves tapped and untapped or the reserves off our shores.

It's time for the United States to be self sufficient and forget the blackmail of the Middle East . Our politicians should start thinking about OUR country first and allow drilling to commence immediately. It's time the Oil companies start spending the billions they are making and start controlling our own destiny.

Wake up America while it's still American and we can say what we want.

Additionally, Obama's/Democrats' "hoax" consists of historically demanding the dismantling of the energy industry of the US due to their supposedly environmental unfriendly results [even though there has not been a major oil disaster in decades]. The US could/should be developing its outer-continental oil supplies for US consumption ONLY, thereby driving down the prices of oil, gas, electricity, products in general [due to transportation/manufacturing costs declines]. Also, by doing such, the Russian and Middle Eastern oil supply-monopolies [that cause the high prices we pay] would become nor as profitable for them and result in a detrimental effect on these countries' economies [our ENEMIES]. But no, we had to elect a liberal Democrat as both President and in Congress; and now we are even more economically beholden to these enemy countries' oil supplies. Americans are STUPID!!!!!!!!!!

I have a friend who has worked for oil companies his entire adult life, accumulating enormous wealth, helping them pay their taxes. He is convinced the oil companies are corrupt and that they gouge customers and that they make too much money.

I ask him why don't they just charge $10/gal or even $5/gal? Or does he know the oil companies pay more in taxes than they make in profits? Does he know it's illegal for gas stations to post the price of gas without the tax? Why would they let the price ever decrease?

He has no answers. He is a liberal.

Speculators don't set the price, they 'find' the supply/demand price earlier than normal customers can. Speculators perform an important and necessary function in the transaction process. They are good for the economy.

Morning gang,

Free markets set the price. If commodity is short supply, price goes up or converse. It's why farmers struggle all the time. Good yields = lower rpices. Competition is good for the consumer.

That being said all these "crises" health care, Climate change, , you name it, become an easy excuse for more centralization and government action. You would think we could have learned by now. Most are unhappy with increased government intrusion and continued program failures, yet continue to demand more. If that makes sense to anyone, please explain.

As to the continual selling of hoaxes and "crises" this country bought over 4 million pet rocks, remember? "There's one born every minute".

RAND found about 3 TRILLION barells of oil in the USA and Trillions of cubic feet of gas.
The shale oil,after start up costs, would level off at around 20-50 dollars per barell. That supply at present consumption rates would be enough for the USA to withdraw from the world oil market for about 275 years.

BUT, that shale oil has been placed off limits by the totalitarian democrats !!!

In fact I used to work in Odessa back in 1981 as a 'swamper', working for a trucking company (E.L. Farmer) -- unloading pipe from train cars and occasionally helping to break down completed drilling rigs. It was dirty, hard, dangerous work. It was too bad, oil went bust in '81. Unemployment in Odessa was 25% at the time.

Actually, as I understand, Odessa has the oil and the workers, Midland is where the owners live.

Who controls the amount they pump? I would guess the oil companies do, based on profit margin, based on the market price of oil; second gov't regulations.

We should be an energy producer and exporter instead of being at the mercy of imports, environmentalists and Democrats. Imagine all the benefits of opening up all sources of oil and natural gas.

I'm with "Vinny"! There is lots of oil here in the US. The question is why don't Oil company's go after it? Is it a case of manipulation by the oil company's. Why introduce more oil the result would be lower prices per barrel and lower profit . Or is it that the goverment will not allow oil company's to drill in these States. It one or the other.

You see how the language has changed - in the 70s it was the language of scarcity - we're going to run out of oil by year 2000! Now, there's plenty of oil offshore, but we're not allowed to use oil because it hurts the planet or increases global warming or the carbon footprint. So the language of scarcity has transformed into the language of control.

Thanks for the reply. That fits my understanding as well. The "scarcity" is one caused by lack of refineries, transport and by regulation imposed by some planner somewhere. (aside: did my UPT in Big Spring 1971)

Classic bait and switch with the bad guy OPEC. While it's fun to imply OPEC is trying to hold the world hostage, it's a handy straw man to deflect blame from the culprits in DC. These folks that get their panties in a twist just thinking the Enviro whackos will label them in the pocket of Big Oil see scary shadows at every turn.

But it's a theme democrat thugs have used for years to hold the others in line. When W was in office the oil shale was under development and several companies were vying for the rights to produce through the cheapest, safest and fastest means. The company with the most expertise publicly states they could keep costs at between 30-35 a barrel and within 10 years the US would be able to join the exporters.

With the new natural gas reserves, as detailed by the WSJ, we could convert every power plant to NG, all trucks and buses and still have enough to last 2 or 3 centuries running full blast with no increase in cost.

The only hold up to any of this was and still is Dems who are beholden to those same enviro whackos and have killed every project at every turn either outright, by regulation or passing legislation.

When republicans grow a pair and tie the bills and rising costs for energy to what dems have ALREADY done, they can cash in any time they want. Between off shore drilling that's been proven good for the oceans, ANWR that's been proven wild life flock to and flourish around, and these new discoveries, an updated nuclear program that has little to no waste, why are getting anything from anyone unless there's money in someone's pocket telling them not to?

Take a look at markets that don't have futures trading and the price variations there before we start blaming "speculators".

For every buyer there is a seller. There is no evidence that these "speculators" are the cause.

Or maybe these "speculators" were the cause of stock prices rising and then crashing?

Al Adab, Yep.

My father, a former engineer for the USAF, used to give speeches during the '70's, warning of the impending depletion of oil (possibly within 30 yrs) and the consequences to the economy and national security. He admits now he was very wrong, but it was based on the most current assessments at the time. I suspect our current assessments are way, way off.

Every year, it seems we are discovering more and larger deposits of oil. And natural gas, well that's a different story. We are like the Saudi Arabia of natural gas. But the libs won't let us extract it, while at the same time, they don't complain about other countries exploring and drilling -- and polluting. And don't get me started on coal....

I read an article on refineries a while back. The point was we don't need MORE refineries, we need more CAPACITY. Refineries need all kinds of infrastructure (pipelines, access, roads, safety, emergency stuff, etc.) that's just not feasible or cost effective (profitable). The gov't just needs to allow current refineries to expand.

Jonah Goldberg wrote an excellent piece in a recent issue of National Review about oil and our environmental standards compared to other countries. It proves once again, the Democrats and environmentalists don't really care about pollution or protecting the planet, they just want power -- power to control us.

That's why Cap & Trade involves separating us from our money rather than stopping or outlawing CO2 emmisions. They want our money to acquire power to control us.

Same goes for PETA. They don't care about animials being killed or suffering, or else they would prohibit or stop lions and hyenas and sharks. (and they wouldn't allow plants to be killed either) No, they want to control humans.

Same goes for gov't healthcare. They don't care about our health. They want our money for redistribution and to acquire power to control us.

Same goes for just about every liberal/Democrat cause. They all involve power to control humans.

In over 30 years there has been no new refineries nor nuclear power plants built in the US - thanks to the deadly combination of eco-nazis and their lawyers. We need a new law - when you sue somebody and then lose, you should not be free to just walk away; you should pay all the costs of the defendant, just like in the rest of the civilized world.

Of course Obama's report blames speculators, rather than tight fuel supplies. How else to justify a big guvmint fix of the "broken" oil market? Gosh, if it was actually due to dwindling oil supplies we might have to drill baby drill.

Sure, playing the speculator scare card undercuts his case for solar and wind, but when has logic ever influenced the ignoramus-in-chief. This is the same guy that claims we need a massive increases in health care and a ruinous cap-and-trade scheme to fix the economy.

Hey Guys,
You can build the Nuke plant in my back yard. Let the Navy run it and I'll collect the rent. Navy record in this regard is more than admirable, almost flawless in fact, over some 50 years of operations. Visit a plant sometime maybe Dresden near Chicago or palo Verde in Arizona and see them. It is sad there are not more of them across the nation.
Electricity is of course only one aspect of energy policy but natural gas and oil make up a troika of potentialities for us to consider.
Time to stop taking counsel of our fears and move forward toward that independance we all wish for.

Specialty drug maker Baxter International Inc. says it's in "full scale" production of a swine flu vaccine. The vaccine will be commercially available in July.

The company made its announcement one day after the World Health Organization declared swine flu a global pandemic.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports 45 swine flu deaths nationwide.

I was hoping mandatory vaccinations would not happen, but it now appears as though that's exactly what we might be facing in the near future.

Part of the reasoning for this is that it appears people over the age of 50 have more cross-reacting antibodies against the current swine flu virus, whereas children who have never been exposed to any of the strains before are more vulnerable.

Specialty drug maker Baxter International Inc. says it's in "full scale" production of a swine flu vaccine. The vaccine will be commercially available in July.

The company made its announcement one day after the World Health Organization declared swine flu a global pandemic.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports 45 swine flu deaths nationwide.

School Children May Face Mandatory Swine Flu Vaccinations

I was hoping mandatory vaccinations would not happen, but it now appears as though that's exactly what we might be facing in the near future.

Part of the reasoning for this is that it appears people over the age of 50 have more cross-reacting antibodies against the current swine flu virus, whereas children who have never been exposed to any of the strains before are more vulnerable.

The Post Gazette http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/09156/975227-114.stm#ixzz0HahlAjDA&C recently reported experts saying, "if the new H1N1 flu comes back in force this fall, it might be better to vaccinate children first," because "in the early stages of the epidemic this spring, the new flu strain has caused "explosive outbreaks" among schoolchildren who have no immunity to it."

Again, it's troubling to see health officials using the term "explosive outbreaks" for a flu that in the vast majority of cases has been reported to be very mild.

Such inflammatory language is simply uncalled for.

Making matters worse, they want to target children who have underlying health problems, i.e. the most vulnerable of the group, which means any potential problems with this untested vaccine will have the capacity to do maximum damage.

Why are We Putting Up With the Same Mistakes Again?

The current evolution of public health decisions has disturbing similarities to previous swine flu vaccine catastrophes'. The last swine flu threat emerged in 1976, right before I entered medical school and I remember it very clearly. It resulted in the massive swine flu vaccine campaign.

However, within a few months, claims totaling $1.3 billion had been filed by victims who had suffered paralysis from the experimental vaccine. Several hundred people developed crippling Guillain-Barré Syndrome after their injections. Even healthy 20-year-olds ended up as paraplegics. The vaccine was also blamed for 25 deaths.

Meanwhile, the deadly swine flu pandemic itself NEVER materialized…

When a vaccine is developed in a mere 13 weeks, you can be virtually assured that it has NOT had the time to be tested in clinical trials to determine safety and effectiveness.

The way I see it, we now stand poised to experience a repeat of the last dangerous swine flu vaccine, which destroyed the lives of hundreds of healthy young boys and girls.

But really, the word 'pandemic' only means that a new virus is spreading across the world. It says nothing about its level of physical danger.

Our family has had no issues with the health care in Canada. There is complaints in the news about long wait times and no hospital beds. We have not experienced this problem. It seems if you have a good family doctor to refer you to a specialist the wait time is really non existent. My Dad had a detached retina in his eye at the end of June. It happened on a Saturday about lunch time and he was in the hospital bed by 4:00 p.m. the surgery was done by 11:00 a.m. the next morning. He has had very positive results from the surgery and his eye sight is as good as before. I went to the doctor in June and needed a cyst removed off of my leg. My doctor was able to get me into a plastic surgeon within a month. The surgery will be done in October - I do not find this a long wait time considering it is not an emergency but, more a cosmetic procedure. I am not sure if you know our son Max has Asperger syndrome. This is highly functioning Autism. Maxwell is extremely smart but, needs some help with his social skills. When Max was 5 years old he had a grand maul seizure at preschool. I meet the ambulance at the Children's Hospital and we were immediately put in a room. Once his vital signs were fine we spent most the day waiting to see a doctor. We ended up seeing a 3rd year student who thought Max had been spinning around until he got dizzy and fell down and hit his head that induced the seizure. We left the hospital and on the way home I called my doctor's office who got us in the next day. She agreed with me that this was not in Maxwell's nature and there was something else going on. My doctor was able to get us in to see a pediatric neurologist within a week. Maxwell did have a seizure disorder that he was on medication for 5 years. Maxwell has grown out of this disorder and is now been seizure free for two years. Lots of kids with Autism also have seizure disorders. I think the wait times in Canada are dependent on the area of you live in. We have had a population boom in Calgary for many years and are up to a million people now. Please let me know if you have any more question.

Although the talk was of an 'oil shortage' nobody in his right mind used that phrase. Truth is there was an oil 'drilling' shortage. I notice Bill O-Reilly is taking bows for blaming the oil 'companies' for the run up in prices, but this story does't blame the oil companies.....rather the Wall St. guys that Obama is now buddies with. Words matter....let's be careful that we use the proper ones.

I'm not sure why this article is generating so much controversy. Matt Tiabbi maintains the same premise in his article about how Goldman Sachs has been the impetus of every bursting bubble including the Great Depression. They have gotten massively rich in the boom and bust cycles and the rest of us have been robbed and sold a bill of goods and it has all been by design. Ben Stein is hardly the first person to suggest that the run-up in oil prices was the result of market manipulation. Think about it - it's not that hard to do.

Personally I have always felt that the "green" agenda has been a scam. I am also convinced that the Tree Huggers and other crazy liberals will only be happy when everyone in the US is back riding horses and traveling in covered wagons (Circa 1840) and living in caves.

Dear Ben and readers,

H.R. 4577: 1999-2000 Consolidated Appropriations Act, 2001 was signed into law by Clinton on December 21, 2000. Inside the Consolidated Appropriations Act passed in December of 2000 was H.R. 5660 (Commodity Futures Modernization Act of 2000) which aimed "To reauthorize and amend the Commodity Exchange Act to promote legal certainty, enhance competition, and reduce systemic risk in markets for futures and over-the-counter derivatives, and for other purposes." and it is there that the problem started.

It looks like Ben watched ABC's 20/20 titled "Over a barrel: The truth about oil" but maybe not very many of the commentators on this page saw it. Yes, it was the oil speculators but it was all done legally because of the change in regulations as I mentioned at the beginning of this post.

The arabs lied, there is only 3 years of oil left from their supply. We here in the USA have about 150 years of oil if we are the only users.

I have a "Black Box" that pulls electrical energy off of the Atomic Structure of the Whole Universe. It can supply 1,000 kw of power, enough to run Vehicles, Homes, Businesses.

I have found "NO" people interested to invest, fund or help develop this project.

All I hear is "Oil,Oil, Oil. So there you have the answer. Oil wins!!!

The volcano in maui puts out more in one hour than all of mankind does in a year world wide. There is 149 very active volcanos world wide.

The reason for the Ice Shelves melting is that the Burmuda High has been 4 times larger and has been "Pumping" more Equator heat further north.
This runs in cycles. Just check the weather maps since 1883.

They use to "Dump" gasoline down old mines and wells in the 1890's. It's a garbage product that Big Oil uses now to get rid of their toxic waste. Carbon tet, Benzine, Naptha etc. is blended into Gasoline and your Platinum Catalitic Converter recycles it for them. Now you know what is really going on.

I am no Obama fan, far from it. I do not doubt any of what is said here. But one thing for certain. There is still such fawning over this fake the Dems have managed to put in office that the only way the will see the light is to provide hard evidence. So as was said by someone of great intellect, "WHERE'S THE BEEF?". If this is in fact the truth then someone needs to be publishing that proof everywhere possible so that the liberal weenies can't just shoo it away by saying the Right or Conservatives will say anything to discredit their mesiaha.

That's an interesting theory and a good story, but at this point that's all it looks like to me, a story. There are zero facts listed to back it up. If the facts were that demand had been rising year over year and supply plateaued in 2004 no longer rising in response to prices that were increasing year over year by 25% per annum and that prices shot through the roof in 2008 even as "speculators" were actually betting on lower prices at that point, where is the evidence that this was all a speculator driven price hike?

Why did the CFTC investigation originally come to the conclusion that the price spike was due to the laws of supply and demand rather than to speculators, and then after the political pressure rose to a fever pitch reverse themselves and say that it was due to the speculators. I would like to know what new evidence came in? What facts back up this new position of theirs that is diametrically opposed to their original conclusion? I have not seen any such evidence, nor any logical reasoning to back up the flip flop.

I'm no fan of Obama. I never voted for him and think he's perhaps even worse than the horrible president I expected, but I hardly see "Peak Oil" as some big conspiracy to help get him elected.

In fact, I see this as more of a vigilante witch hunt on his part to pander to the masses in looking for a scape goat to pin the consequences of a very unpleasant truth on.

Taking away the speculators won't take away the fact that oil is a finite resource that we have been sucking out of the ground since the early 1900s and our appetite has been growing by leaps and bounds to the point that we were using some 84+ million barrels of the stuff every day and the developing world is wanting to get their share as well. Meanwhile those easy to find gigantic gushers are petering out and the new sources are harder to find, are more expensive to develop and take a lot more energy to extract. Deep water wells, more than a mile below the surface of the ocean and tar sands and oil shale rock take much more energy and don't produce the daily yields the Saudi wells have since the 1950s.

We might as well get used to the fact that oil prices are going to rise if the world economy recovers and demand goes back to where it was in 2008. Finding some scapegoats and hiding our heads in the sand won't solve that problem.

Hey Jeff,

Demand for oil is not the same as demand for gasoline. The biggest difference is that demand for gasoline is made by consumers at the gas pump and demand for oil is made by speculators and refineries. Why did gasoline prices rise so much and so fast last year? Because speculators were buying up oil and sitting on it which raised the price that refineries had to pay for oil which in turn raised the price that consumers had to pay for gasoline produced by the refineries.

Cushing, Oklahoma is where oil changes owners, where most of the oil storage facilities are located and where the price of oil is determined as it is the nominal heart of the U.S. financial oil market. Used to be a cap on how much speculators could buy up and hang onto for selling in the future until the Commodity Futures Modernization Act of 2000 was signed into law by Bill Clinton on December 21, 2000 (do you remember what was going on at that time?). I think the reason why conservatives don't like to mention this is because they are all about "free markets" which is fine except that in this case, allowing big money players to buy up as much oil as they want knowing full well that when they raise the demand for oil they will make a huge profit selling that oil sometime in the future will raise the price of gasoline at the pump.

A free market allows these big money players to ratchet up the price of any commodity it chooses to corner. As much as I detest government controls I would rather the big money players be restrained than go along with the conservative's totally-free-market-is-best-for-everything-and everybody motto.

Ben sadly doesn't seem to understand something critical about markets...they move on a number of factors, and a highly significant one is the perception of supply/demand balances. Those companies he mentions might have been long oil, but their positions could in no way match the 90% world oil ownership (90% of oil reserves are held by gov't controlled entities). If those countries, and other companies, thought strongly that the move up in oil was false, they would have been selling into it against the longs of the market traders Ben mentions (thereby mitigating the price increase). Oil ran up because of the belief / fear that the world is running out of oil. See how many books came out the prior 3 years discussing the concept of 'peak oil'.

while the % of state owned oil varies (I have seen ranges between 65% and 80% (see below) it still dwarfs whatever trading or position sizes could be taken by any of the firms and traders -- even acting completely in concert -- Ben Stein names.

As a European I stand by in despair while certain factions in the US stick their heads in the sand over what is clearly an impending - and ultimately terminal - oil crunch. I loved the comment about building a nuke plant in my bank yard if I can charge them rent.
It makes sense that any kind of not-in-my-backyard facility should simply make some kind of deal with it's neighbors.

Giving them a small income & maybe buying their health insurance in exchange for the risk they are passing on to their neighbors. The exact terms could be negotiated individually or as a class, but if a facility could get these agreements then the local or state government could fast track the permitting.
The government would simply make sure that any neighbor who has costs imposed on them are given fair notification & not allow the deal to happen until most participants are satisfied. But they really should leave it to the company and individuals to decide what fair terms are for their coexistance.
That way you are only passing costs (risk, potential health problems) onto willing participants. The willingness of neighbors would factor into the cost (not just land price) and plants would get built or not built based on their true economic value vs. their true costs.
Facilities would have an incentive not to pollute, to keep an attractive facility, and to maintain a good safety record. This is because people would be more willing to let them operate and would agree to lower payoffs. It is much more effective than the government simply telling them to do it.

Right now the government just sets the rules in a heavy handed fashion and the economy is frozen. Any benefit you should be getting for living near a dangerous facility is completely stolen by the government now. They claim to be protecting the "environment" but really they are just stealing any benefit from free people who are willing to exchange a small environmental inconvenience in exchange for money.

Believe me, rural towns would literally compete to have facilities built near them if it came with a small pension without even having to work, health insurance & new jobs. The current system makes it so no one wants to build or have anything built near them because government environmental "protection" means that only a few well connected companies win at the expense of their neighbors.

Well, I just came across this post and, to me, the important point here is that people started paying more for fuel based on that hoax, and not the fact that the US is changing it's energy policies. Does anyone really think that there is such a shortage of oil when there are still companies investing in oil-based-products? And, by the way, do you really think that those "accidents"/"attacks by bandits" or whatever the fuck they come up with to justify the increase in oil prices arent' hoaxes/schemes created by the oil-establishment either? Another important fact is that the usual criminals keep doing what they always did and - as usual - get away with it. Anyway, the change in the energy policies can only be a good thing but what really pisses me off is that it will be same old motherf*ckers that are going to get rich with it, and that those same motherf*ckers will manage to find a way to wage war even when the rest of the world does not need fossil fuels anymore (that is, when countries/people get energy-independent). So..I kind-of-liked your post but I think that somehow you missed the point. And no, I'm not an environment-freak worried that the Earth is dying (althoug in a way, it is) but if we can get cleaner energy sources...why not? It will only be better for everyone, except maybe (I wish) for those corrupt and greedy motherf*ckers who I hope will die a horrible death and burn in hell one day. Peace.
