Clearly the Obama administration has not brought comfort to the
markets in its initial weeks in office. The President and his
team have also failed to bring clarity or coherence. Their
massive agenda is not only ambitious, bold, and expensive, it is
contradictory.
Take the President’s new budget proposal, for instance. In order
to pay for the massive expansion of government spending,
including $634 billion for health-care reform, Obama proposes to
resort to the time honored populist tradition of “taxing the
rich,” meaning families making in excess of $250,000. Despite the
administration’s incessant cry that the government should prop up
the housing market and increase home prices, the budget contains
a provision that would reduce the amount of mortgage interest
deductions “wealthy” families can take on their home payments. In
other words, Obama would like to take the seemingly few remaining
people in our society who can actually afford homes and reduce
one of their biggest incentives for home ownership. Not
surprisingly, the National Association of Realtors opposes the
provision, saying it “will result in further erosion of home
prices and home values.”
Similarly, the administration keeps talking about greasing the
credit markets, encouraging banks to lend again, and driving down
the costs of borrowing money, particularly in mortgage markets.
However, Obama favors legislation that would allow bankruptcy
judges to alter a bankrupt mortgager’s payments and cram down new
terms on the creditor. Lenders may react by appropriately
increasing mortgage rates that account for a greater risk premium
in financing home purchases.
Obama and many of his Democratic allies in Congress are also
remarkably haphazard in their approach to dealing with the
automobile industry. They will likely shower billions of
additional taxpayer dollars on the ailing Detroit companies. Yet,
they want to enact onerous new cap and trade legislation that
will hamper the industry, as well as grant states exemptions
enabling them to impose their own more stringent emissions
standards on automobile companies. Furthermore, while even
elected representatives realize full well that the automobile
companies need to make changes to return to profitability —
specifically, they need to break free from the shackles of UAW
driven labor costs — politicians think they can mandate the
companies into making money by insisting upon green car
production that the market has overlooked.
And what would a discussion of economic waywardness be without
addressing the financial sector? The American taxpayer now has
trillions of dollars at stake in the banking industry (although
do not expect a dividend check anytime soon). We all know, or
should realize, that we have a vested interest in seeing the
industry recover, not only because a well-run banking sector is
imperative to our economy but because of how much taxpayers stand
to lose if banks fail.
But rather than encourage financial institutions to retain the
best talent to help resuscitate the industry, Congress and the
administration have imposed mandated pay scales that will in
result brain drain. This is because the American Recovery and
Investment Act of 2009 (ARIA) limits the relative size of bonuses
for executives at firms that accept Troubled Asset Relief Program
(TARP) funds. In addition, the ARIA limits the ability of banks
to hire foreign workers holding H-1B visas. The provision,
designed to encourage banks to hire American workers first, is
just another anti-free market provision that will discourage
banks from hiring the best employees.
It is also not the only way in which the Democratic government is
engaging in misguided protectionism, while speaking the language
of international cooperation. The ARIA requires domestic
production of iron, steel, and manufactured goods for
stimulus-funded projects.
Inconsistent is one thing; disingenuous is another. That,
however, is the best way to describe the President’s new budget
proposal. It is also the genius of Barack Obama, because while he
recently proposed a $3.6 trillion budget that would increase the
federal deficit to $1.75 trillion, he harps (with a straight
face) about making “hard choices where to spend and where to
save.” He talks about how this is “just the beginning of the cuts
we’re going to make” and about “fiscal discipline.”
So are we saving and investing in the future? Well, not if you
consider the $787 billion “stimulus” package Congress just passed
at Obama’s urging or the massive budget he just proposed. Are we
stimulating then? Not if you consider the massive tax hikes for
the “rich” that Obama wants to fund his new programs.
Perhaps the only thing we can say about Obama’s plan is that it
aims to redistribute. And it should do a damn fine job of
spreading the misery around.

Current and former administrators and advisers in the Obama campaign and in his administration who got sweetheart deals from mortgage companies are going to refinance those mortgages, through the new government mortgage rescue program.
Even a few members of Congress who received those sweetheart loans, while the rest of the suckers in the American public subsidized those loans by paying higher rates, are considering this option.
Yes, they are going to come clean and get clean, only this time it will all be done legally. They are considering stopping making payments on their sweetheart mortgages through Countrywide and will, when the mortgages are two months behind, be allowed to "wash" the transactions through the new government rescue program. And here all of you readers at this Conservative web site have been saying how dishonest they are. They're coming clean and getting clean. I see that the Pro-Diversity Eric Cantor Crowd runs the American Specatator!
The H-1B Visa program was started in the 1990’s because the NIH wanted more scientists but had a low budget. Then convicted felon and lobbyist Jack Abramoff (A lobbyist for Bill Gates Microsoft Corporation) lobbied to have the number of H-1B Visas expanded dramatically during the late 1990’s so Microsoft could get cheap labor.
If you combine the H-1B Visa program impact with the impact of the 1965 Immigration Act (Hart-Celler) Act which has mandated that 90% of immigration to the U.S. come from non-Western European countries it’s easy to see how U.S. demographics have changed since the 1960’s. In 1968 over 88% of American babies were white. Now, 49% of American babies are white. That’s a 39% difference in 40 years and is a direct result of government backed social engineering and not a natural process. For instance, in 2007 the U.S. let over 250,000 people from India, China, and Mexico become U.S. citizens and less than 50,000 from Germany, U.K., Ireland, France, and Italy which is where our heritage and culture are from.
The important thing is that prior to this massive immigration from non-Western Cultures and prior to the fixation on turning the world into a globalized economy at the expense of the U.S. Middle Class/Working Class and Manufacturing Sector the U.S. was clearly the world leader in every sector of technology and manufacturing. We also had a thriving Middle Class and a working class that had jobs in the Manufactoring Sector that paid well and not simply Service Sector jobs like we have now where two parents working at Wal-Mart with no health insurance can barely pay the mortgage and foret about the savings rate.
Finally, the U.S. was the clear leader in “innovation” and manufacturing prior to the change in U.S. demographics. Now, every new App on an iphone is considered “innovation” especially if the guy doing the “innovation” isn’t from Western Culture. The bottom line is that we can easily do without these people and we’ll actually be better off especially when you consider the “family reunification” part of our immigration laws. Since 1970 crime in the U.S. has gone up, our nation has become Balkanized, we are no longer the clear leader in technological innovation, and our healthcare system is down the tubes. It’s time we ended the H-1B and L1 Visa programs, repealed the 1965 Hart-Celler Immigration Act, repealed NAFTA, went back to National Origins immigration policies, and started building our manufacturing sector once again. If we don’t do these things we will become a Bloated with Deficits, Balkanized, High Crime, Low Wage, Narco state in the future.

In 2008 households making $250,000 or more (wealthy or rich Americans) favored Obama and the Democrats. While I oppose Obama with my heart and soul I can feel no pity for the fools who empowered him and his party that in less than 2 months destroyed the savings of the majority of middle-class Americans like me. They deserve our scorn not sympathy.
I have the same contempt for the bankers and stock brokers who bankrolled Obama. As for a brain drain the current problems in the banking industry, auto industry and the stock market reveal that there was a brain drain in those industries long ago when they came to be dominated by rich liberals from the Ivy League. Conservatives should find the angst some on the right have for these liberals nauseating. They are as much a part of the problem as is Barack Obama, Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi.
While some conservatives wring their hands when morons like Henry Waxman excoriate bankers I find it both disgustingly hypocritical and hilarious, because these squirming financial boobs are big contributors to the Democrat party. Rather than defending their exorbitant bonuses conservatives should reveal they’re Democrat ties and demand their scalps for their incompetent and in some cases criminal handling (Franklin Delano Raines and Jamie Gorelick) of their fiduciary responsibilities.
Conservatives should oppose Obama’s tax policies, because their bad for the economy, but they should not defend the liberals who draw these unearned fat paychecks (most deserve the boot for their incompetence). But we should not merely oppose we should come up with real alternatives that will help the economy.
One thing we should champion is a total reform of the Federal tax system. Now is the time to champion bold innovation not the status quo or the stale mantra of “what would Reagan do?” We need to quit looking backwards and cast our vision forward. We need to push for a three tier flat tax (10%, 15% and 25%) that replaces Federal income, payroll and capital gains taxes with a simple and fair system that strengthens our economy and limits Democrats ability to fleece taxpayers. Simply all income below $250,000 should be taxed at the 10% level and everything up to $1,000,000.00 at 15%. As for deductions there should three – housing interest, medical expenses and charitable giving, because Americans would demand them. This would shore up the middle class and take away the class warfare argument from Democrats. As for the argument that this would absolve much of the middle class from paying Federal taxes – GOOD! The more Americans who keep their own money the better, because it keeps it out of the hands of incompetent and greedy Democrat bureaucrats.
As for the argument Federal revenues would drop – GOOD. The Federal government needs less of our money not more of it. This argument about the “drop” in Federal revenue would afford us the opportunity to champion legislation to ban earmarks, eliminate Federal bureaucracies, cut needless programs that subsidize Democrat special interest groups and adopt zero baseline budgeting. Sound tax and spending policies may not be the vogue in the Obamanation at the moment, but as the country continues to go down the toilet thanks to Obama’s policies conservatives and Republicans should be the voice of real change.

As OB paced the room the Britisher steadfastly followed his every step with a scornful brow, as though about to speak some phrase of wisdom. ST| 3.9.09 @ 4:56PM
Tom's comments about the H-1B and L-1 Visa programs are spot on. Critics of the TARP H-1B policies claim that the new restrictions will, in practice, prevent the banks from hiring the so-called "best and brightest" under the H-1B program. This claim is patently false for the following reasons:
1) Very few of the H-1B candidates are truly outstanding innovators. The vast majority of H-1B workers are simply ordinary people who are willing to do routine tasks for lower pay than Americans, in return for a chance to obtain sponsorship for permanent residence visas (also known as green cards). Once they do obtain green card sponsorship then it is extremely difficult for them to change jobs (for better pay or working conditions) without starting the lengthy green card process all over again, so they effectively become indentured servants to their employers.
2) Those few foreign nationals that are world-class talents can be hired under the O-1 visa program, which is specifically designed for people who have demonstrated truly outstanding ability.
3) Some foreign nationals graduating from American universities could be hired for a period of 29 months under the OPT (Optional Practical Training) program.
The H-1B visas regulations are also riddled with loopholes that allow employers to legally underpay the foreign nationals with respect to their American counterparts.
ST| 3.9.09 @ 4:58PM
The employment-based green card program for foreign professionals is a scam as well. If a company wishes to sponsor a foreign national for an employment-based green card, then federal law states that the firm must make a “good faith” attempt to hire Americans first. However, there are many ways around this requirement. In fact, many so-called open jobs are not really open at all, but are actually filled with H-1B workers who are desperately trying to get that green card sponsorship. Americans who apply for these jobs will be summarily rejected with absolutely no transparency in the hiring process. For evidence of this you can view the following videos:

H-1B Dependent Employer Attestation language is:
A. Displacement: The employer will not displace any similarly employed U.S. worker within the period beginning 90 days before and ending 90 days after the date of filing a petition for an H-1B nonimmigrant supported by the application.
B. Secondary Displacement: The employer will not place any H-1B nonimmigrant employed pursuant to this application with any other employer or at another employer's worksite UNLESS the employer applicant first makes a bona fide inquiry as to whether the other employer has displaced or intends to displace a similarly employed U.S. worker within the period beginning 90 days before and ending 90 days after the placement, and the employer applicant has no contrary knowledge.
C. Recruitment and Hiring: Prior to filing any petition for an H-1B nonimmigrant pursuant to this application, the employer took or will take good faith steps meeting industry-wide standards to recruit U.S. workers for the job for which the nonimmigrant is sought, offering compensation at least as great as required to be offered to the H-1B nonimmigrant. The employer will (has) offer(ed) the job to any U.S. worker who (has) applied and is equally or better qualified than the H-1B nonimmigrant.

ST| 3.9.09 @ 7:56PM
JGO,
The restrictions that you listed only apply to that (small) percentage of employers that are deemed "H-1B dependent" by the Federal Government. The vast majority of U.S. – based employers are classified as "H-1B non-dependent". These employers can freely substitute H-1B workers for American workers.
For proof of this, refer to the U.S. Department of Labor Strategic Plan for 2006-2011, which is available at:
http://www.dol.gov/_sec/stratplan/strat_plan_2006-2011.pdf
On page 35 you will find the following passage:
"... H-1B workers may be hired even when a qualified U.S. worker wants the job, and a U.S. worker can be displaced from the job in favor of the foreign worker."
This applies to all "H-1B non-dependent" employers. Since most U.S. based companies are classified as "H-1B non-dependent", this means that the vast majority of firms in the U.S. can legally discriminate against American workers in favor of alien workers.
Therefore, as the economy continues to contract, Americans are, in my opinion, in even greater danger of being displaced by foreign workers on H-1B visas.
The H-1B visa and employment-based green card rackets should be shut down.

Another promise by Obama goes down!
http://voices.washingtonpost.com/44/2009/03/09/obama_pulls_back_from_signing.html?hpid=topnews
But longtime Bush critics hammered Obama for failing to put a complete end to the practice. The American Bar Association in 2006 called signing statements "contrary to the rule of law."
"There should be a clean break with the past on this," said Christopher Anders, the senior legislative counsel for the American Civil Liberties Union. "The president shouldn't be asserting -- as President Bush did -- wholesale objections to entire sections of statutes and claiming some kind of presidential authority to ignore them."
Anders said his group appreciates Obama's pledge to reduce the number of signing statements. But he said the danger still exists that the new president will use the tactic to ignore the will of the legislature.
"It's not enough to take any president at his or her word on an issue like this," Anders said.
And former Bush administration officials said they could detect little difference between Obama's new promise and the standards the former president used when issuing signing statements on legislation.
"This has been a standard practice going back decades. It's just when President Bush did it, his critics pounced," said former Bush spokesman Ari Fleischer. "They're going to do the same thing, whenever they feel like it."
In the memo, Obama pledged to use signing statements sparingly and to be bound by "interpretations of the Constitution that are well founded." And he promised to avoid signing statements by fixing constitutional problems before they reach his desk.
But the new White House stopped short of invalidating all of the signing statements that Bush issued during his eight years in office. The memo, first reported by the New York Times, says agencies should seek the attorney general's advice before enforceing the prior statements.
A former Bush lawyer said that instruction is no different than what the 43rd president gave upon taking office. "You couldn't just rely on President Clinton's statements," the lawyer said. "You would have to go to the Department of Justice, the White House to make sure that Bush agreed. That was just standard procedure."
