Nancy Pelosi's Modest Proposal

"It will reduces costs," Nancy Pelosi said on This Week, in reference to the "stimulus" rationale for sending millions of dollars to the states for "family planning."

What would once have been considered an astonishingly chilly and incomprehensible stretch is now blandly stated liberal policy.

The full title of Jonathan Swift's work, A Modest Proposal, was, For Preventing the Children of Poor People in Ireland From Being a Burden to their Parents or Country, and for Making Them Beneficial to the Public.

Change a few of the words and it could be a Democratic Party policy paper. Swift suggested that 18th-century Ireland stimulate its economy by turning children into food for the wealthy. Pelosi proposes stimulating the U.S. economy by eliminating them.

Other slumping countries, such as Russia and France, pay parents to have children; it looks like Obama's America will pay parents to contracept or kill them. Perhaps the Freedom of Choice Act can also fall under the Pelosi "stimulus" rationale. Why not? An America of shovels and scalpels will barrel into the future.

Euthanasia is another shovel-ready job for Pelosi to assign to the states. Reducing health care costs under Obama's plan, after all, counts as economic stimulus too. Controlling life, controlling death, controlling costs. It's all stimulus in the Brave New World utopia to come.

Let's not punish the economy with future workers. Maybe Social Security can be pushed back a couple of decades and the elderly can just work twice as hard.

Pelosi has helpfully if dimly blurted out what's often implicit in many of the left's schemes for human improvement: that, after all the rhetorical bells and whistles have fallen silent, the final solution concealed within the schemes is to eliminate people.

Alan Weisman's The World Without Us isn't a horrifying thesis to the liberal elite but enjoyable beach reading. Al Gore lists population control as the first solution to global warming and they nod and give him a Nobel Prize.

They name awards after eugenicists like Margaret Sanger. "Unwanted" children are immediately seen as an unspeakable burden. Pregnancy is a punishment, and fertility is little more than a disease.

Pelosi's gaffe illustrates the extent to which eugenics and economics merge in the liberal utilitarian mind. Malthus lives.

Hillary Clinton's State Department will soon treat people-elimination, in one form or another, as "development." She implied as much in her opening prattle about "development" and the "long-term" security interests of the U.S., which is a euphemism for saying that UN-style population control ideology and America's interests are seen by the Obama administration as identical.

Not only will the American taxpayer be expected to pay the rent for Planned Parenthood at home, but now with Obama's reversal of the Mexico City policy he will get to underwrite third-world abortions too.

Population is the poverty, not the riches, of a country, according to the left. Never mind that the only developing countries are the ones with growing populations. No matter: While nature can grow unfettered, human nature is to be controlled at all costs. We must preserve everything purely except ourselves. We must send money to the UN to save rain forests and destroy humans.

Pelosi's idea would have appealed to Swift at some level. Mocking the fashionable utilitarian theories of the day, he attributes his Modest Proposal to a "very knowing American of my acquaintance in London." He also had his own satirical notion of stimulus: have the poor be run "through a joint-stock company." Who knows what he would have done with TARP?

64 years ago my father's generation came home after fighting a brutal war against a regime which advocated the very same things - eugenics, a "final solution," etc. Fast forward to now - the US has become that which it destroyed a few generations ago, particularly with our current "leadership," composed of Nazi Pelosi - a moron with power which makes her doubly dangerous, Milquestoast Reid who appears to play second fiddle to Pelosi, and the second coming of Christ himself, whose declaration of "we won the election" enraged me. So, I suppose that entitles them to installing their version of totalitarianism. Amazing that there is no outrage among the American people, who appear to know nothing of the Declaration of Independence and our other founding documents, and why the founders rebelled against England (for a lot less than what we are suffering now, sad to say). Our republic has truly descended to the level of imbecility.

Peter Skurkiss| 1.27.09 @ 7:11AM

Pelosi's idea would not have appealed to Swift at any level. If I'm not mistaken, Swift's book, "A Modest Proposal ... ," was satire.

As for today's Democrats, it is near impossible to overestimate their level of depravity.

Melvin| 1.27.09 @ 7:12AM

Someone needs to remind Ms. Pelosi that she is speaker of the House and not God. Only God has the divine authority to who lives and who dies and not some aged botoxed Hait Ashbury Hippie.
The unmitigated arrogance of this woman and those like thinkers in Washington D.C. and San Francisco.
What's next state sponsored euthanasia for the aged and severely ill? This notion isn't to far off the radar because that is exactly what socialized medicine is that President Obama and Pelosi are pushing for.
The American public is as dumb as a bag of hammers if they think for one minute that President Obama and the political power elite are going to use the same state sponsored health system that they will push on the rest of us.
But unfortunately many Americans are as dumb as a bag of hammers because all they can see is the phrase, "Free Health Care," and they don't care who pays for it, where it comes from and who has to suffer from substandard rationed health care just as long as it's free.

TennesseeVolunteer| 1.27.09 @ 7:36AM

I am so glad that Pelosi and Obama have come right out in the first week of this term to absolutely prove that they are Socialists or worse. Obama's exective order about the funding of international abortion is bringing out huge concern throughout the Catholic church and Pelosi is going to push them to have to take a strong stand for life.
This is the Baby boomers WWII. This is our battle and our responsibility to make sure that all men and women of good heart fight this facist wing of government, but even more, of wrongheaded ideals!

Kathy| 1.27.09 @ 8:20AM

After hearing Pelosi's little speech yesterday, all I could think was that the woman is pushing for genocide of African Americans.

Greg| 1.27.09 @ 8:35AM

TennesseeVolunteer-

You're right about the international abortions...but maybe, that is part of Nazi Pelosi's economic stimulus as well, aferall, it is cheaper to abort babies overseas now than it is to feed them later!

stmichrick| 1.27.09 @ 8:37AM

It's always fascinating to me how far left politicians never envision themselves or their families living in the world that they create.

Most live in upper- middle or upper class splendor with the finest health insurance they could want, their children attending the finest schools available and multiple layers of personal security. Nothing will change for them.

All these things will not change for the 'important' ones as they impose rationed health care, the public school system and no means of personal protection for the other humans deemed worthy to be born.

Look, you ignorant rightwing wackos don't get it! We intend to LIMIT illegals to one generation by this means. They offer us a service of which we can make use, and we offer to help them eliminate "mistakes", "undue burdens", "inconveniences", etc.

It works for all of us!

JP| 1.27.09 @ 9:21AM

Paul Johnson once quipped that, "The problems with intellectuals is that the hate Man, but love Humanity." Could it be that most of our deep thinkers are nothing by mytantropes?

That aside, our liberal intellegenstia has cemented the idea of the 2 child family into virtually every man, woman, and child for the last 40 years. Women's place is toiling outside the home alongside hubby. Whether at the factory, hospital, courtroom, or laboratory, women can now turn thier backs on children rearing and join hubby in accumulating consumer goods and living The Life.

Which is all well and good. However, said parents also demand a monolithic Bismarckian social insurance state, which can only come about in a society that averages 3.5-5.0 children/couple. From subsidized medical insurance for the "poor" to subsidized day care, subsidized mortgages,to generous retirement and insuance benefits, our society's expectations do not match reality.

And every year our appetites for more taxpayer funded goodies continues. Now, we are going for broke -literally. We're spending over $1.5 trillion of borrowed tax payer's money to kill or countercept the very people who will be required to pay it back. What geniuses thought that one up?

If anyone thinks this recession is going to short lived, think again. Beginning 2 years ago the first of the Baby-Boomers retired. If anyone thinks that this group of people are going to be denied thier "fair share", they're mistaken. For those under 50, look forward to working until the day you drop dead.

Alan Brooks| 1.27.09 @ 9:27AM

Sooner or later someone is going to make Hopey "Dowanna see my [sexually active] daughters punished with my grandchild" McChange sit down and read the reports that it is His Own People who are going to be "eliminated" as "inconvenient" as they are massively and casually eliminating themselves even now, through murder, abortion, and spending their entire lives in prison.

For those who have or wish to have another solution, Google the Sisters of Life. We have a mission here in Toronto and their home base is in Yonkers, NY. With the help of millions of people standing by with our hands full of everything they need, the Sisters will take in and protect and provide for any pregnant woman who needs them. And I mean provide everything from a place to live, to a hand to hold and a shoulder to cry on, to a squad of men who will approach in a brotherly way the father of the baby and suggest that it takes two to tango and what's he going to do now?

Operators are standing by. Day and night. Call them.

Trotter| 1.27.09 @ 10:02AM

For those who don't think that liberals really are this messed up, I suggest you pay a visit to the liberal blogs to read the reactions this morning to Obama allegedly dropping this part of the "stimulus" bill. You would come away thinking that this proposal was the entire bill and that failure to pass it means the death of mankind.

Seriously, this is truly frightening stuff. The mere thought that the person two steps from the presidency can so blithely equate the culling of children (and yes, that is exactly what it is) as a benefit to society, AND that the adoring masses so heartily agree, is chilling. While I am loathe to use slippery slope analogies, I don't think it too much of a hyperbolic stretch to envision the next step being the feds showing up to take little Johnny to the processing center because it would benefit society (after all, he's a bit near-sighted and slow, and he has freckles for crying out loud).

Melvin| 1.27.09 @ 10:03AM

I have heard offspring called many names but never have I heard children being called, "mistakes", "undue burdens", "inconveniences", etc."
Only a dark cold hearted Liberal could think of calling children such vile comments.

Jonathan Swift is beyond doubt one of the greatest writers of English literature. I was privileged to read his masterpiece "Gulliver’s Travels" in grade school, high school and college. It was while at university that I took a graduate course which spent months discussing Swift. Most of the people in this class, including the Professor, were of the opinion that Gulliver’s “Voyage to the Country of the Houyhnhnms” was the author’s depiction of an ideal society. For those who don’t recall the Houyhnhnms were horses that had developed a society governed by reason and honesty. This society was plagued by human-like creatures called “Yahoos”. However, in Chapter IX of that voyage Houyhnhnm representatives met in General Assembly to debate “Whether the Yahoos should be exterminated from the Face of the Earth.” A friend of mine, a Jew, recognized this as very similar to Hitler’s Final Solution to the Jewish Problem and spoke up to express his view. Viewed in this light, the Houyhnhnm utopia many thought Swift was describing becomes just another tyranny of the elites. Today we are controlled by members of another Equine race, the aptly named jackass. And note, the Yahoo was genetically equivalent to humans.

Pelosi once again proves that she is a greater Catholic Theologian than the Pope, but Catholics have no right to complain since a majority of them drank the kool-aid of Hope and Change.

And we should expect nothing less from the Democrats, after all The Lemming In Chief himself already advocated for killing (well technically allowing them to die) American Citizens when he so voted in the Illinois Senate.

Kevin| 1.27.09 @ 11:13AM

Peter Skurkiss (1.27.09 @ 7:11AM)--you're right: the "Modest Proposal" was satire (kind of ghoulish at that). Unfortunately, it sounds as though Pelosi would take the work literally.

Curly Smith| 1.27.09 @ 11:15AM

I'll grant you that Phase I won't do much for the economy but when we move to Phase II and relieve the automakers, and every other industry, of their pension obligations by managing the death of those over 65 then you'll see the economy rebound. Phase III where we "Euthanize the Super Sized" will finally get our health care costs "slimmed down". It's all part of plan, be patient because "Change is on the Way!"

Becky| 1.27.09 @ 11:31AM

What does Pelosi care about the future? She will be the next 90 year old hanging on, re elected year after year; no matter how illogic her constituents will foist her upon us. Democrats have managed to induce impotence in the press and it's worked pretty well. In Michigan, population loss, including children from Detroit schools, doesn't seem to be proving her theroy correct, but what do I know?

My folks came through Ellis Island. This wave of immigrants was far from perfect, but they followed a few basic rules. One was to work and fend for themselves, if at all possible. The other was to have children in wedlock, and take responsibility for their support. To one degree or another, they believed in and adhered to the judeo christian values system. They worked with those who came before them to make America a great country. Such people today are a threat to liberals and democrats. The only young people today we seem to hear about are the little pc grads of this or that university, or, of course, the poor and disenfranchised who seem content to be victims. Their are other young people out there as well. They sport tattoos and piercings sometimes. The conservative, republican preacher man, or straight laced suburban guy or gal they do not understand. But, they do not want to live as serfs in Obama/Pelosi land. We do live in a Cuckoos nest now. We need a leader to inspire and ask which one of you nuts has ant guts. And, then like the Chief lift up the massive cistern and crash it through the prison walls.

I escaped from a communist country in 1957; worked in France 5 years while waiting for a visa to come here. Worked 33 years as an engineer, now retired. And living a nightmare: Abu Hussein from Kenya, community organizer from swamps of Chicago, in charge; Pelosi, a rich San Fransisco socialite and salon commie, together with that small-time crook Reid in charge of our laws; university professors teaching revolutionary marxism, a new theory of societal progress now 160 years old with about 120,000,000 murders committed. Where can I go now - back to Europe?

J Jo| 1.27.09 @ 2:39PM

Japan has been facing an aging and declining population much longer than the US and has recently taken to mandating reduced work hrs so that husbands and wives can spend more time together and therefore hopefully more children can be born. They realize that they can't keep their economy going if there are no children left to carry it forward.

If we do not have an increasing population the debt will be spread among fewer and fewer people and it will become more and more unsustainable.

Culper, Jr.| 1.27.09 @ 3:04PM

Ms. Pelosi should have at least enough elementary understanding of economics to know that avoiding future expenditures is not the same as current stimulus. For her program to work, it requires not a negative component (eliminating future "burdens"), but a positive one (making those burdens into a viable machine for economic growth).

Perhaps we could find some profitable use for all of Ms. Pelosi's aborted babies. Or, better yet, why not let them come to term, then sell them for parts or as slaves. Think of the stimulus effect THAT would have!

Or am I missing something in her otherwise brilliant plan?

RightofRush| 1.27.09 @ 4:49PM

Diskept, I rather liked the ant guts part. It would give the nuts something to aspire to.
The current situatlion it very remenicent of 1933. Then we had a leftist Republican who left his party's principles of small government and gave way to FDR, enamoured with scocialism, that turned a recession into a 7+ year depression.
The only difference is that zero (big O to some, zero to me) may well be to the left of FDR.

JWWright| 1.27.09 @ 4:52PM

Hows that modest private jet, that Nancy has?

The first speaker to ever have one... gosh, I wonder what kind of carbon footprint that tax fattened hyena produces?

And they want to add $2000 to the price of new cars in the name of environmentalism?

That oughta boost sales.... hypocrites.

DaveS| 1.27.09 @ 5:41PM

I'll give Pelosi credit for one thing: getting BHO elected by having McCain and Republicans (note the difference) sign on to the bloated, unconstitutional, irrational, and idiotic TARP. Other than that, she's rather unaccomplished, has no ideas, eats leather every time she opens her mouth, and even gets my normally quiescent wife commenting on 'stupidity' - for which I duly scold her because, afetr all, she's our Speaker, too.

DAM| 1.27.09 @ 6:15PM

There is an even larger aspect to this issue than anyone has commented on. Elimination of unwanted or "defective" children, the elderly, the obese, etc. will also aid the United States in Obama's plan to become energy independent--these carbon units can be converted to fuel to heat our homes or power our automobiles. I don't know the MPH(uman) figures, but surely Obama has this all worked out.

George| 1.27.09 @ 6:35PM

It would be well for this group of commentators to cultivate the virtue of Hope and not mock those who profess it however imperfectly.

The fact that you people still manage to find yourself superior in any way astounds me. i know there is no hope in me attempting to refute the multitude of insane, unfounded accusations and assumptions you have all come to, as it would require a work on the scale of a doctoral thesis to accomplish. I ask you only to look at your country now, its economy, its security, its morals, after eight years under a government that holds the ideals being lauded in your disgustingly inadequate arguments. Look at it and tell me that it is better off. Tell me why the greatest joy that your nation has known in the past 8 years was the election of a man who promised to abolish these ideas. Before you crucify the new administration, maybe you should at least consider the flaws of the old
