We Can Thank Bob Corker for Ratifying Obama’s Iran Deal
by

As Emily noted earlier today, Maryland Senator Barbara Mikulski became the 34th Democrat to announce intention of supporting the Iran nuclear agreement.

Over at Commentary, Jonathan S. Tobin argues that Democrats now own Iran and will rue this day:

But what this means is that every act of Iranian terror, every instance of Hamas and Hezbollah using Iranian funds and material to wage war against Israel or moves against Saudi Arabia and the Gulf states must now be seen as having been enabled not just by Obama but also by his party.

Unfortunately, a point that Tobin acknowledges, Republicans own Iran as well, namely Bob Corker. If it were not for the Corker bill passed last spring, Mikulski’s yes vote would not matter. As NRO’s Andy McCarthy argued at the time:

To summarize, the Constitution puts the onus on the president to find 67 Senate votes to approve an international agreement, making it virtually impossible to ratify an ill-advised deal. The Corker bill puts the onus on Congress to muster 67 votes to block an agreement.

Under the Constitution, Obama’s Iran deal would not have a prayer. Under the Corker bill, it would sail through. And once again, it would be Republicans first ensuring that self-destruction is imposed on us, then striking the pose of dogged opponents by casting futile nay votes.

Well, self-destruction is now ready to be imposed. It’s things like this that get Republicans called the Stupid Party. It’s things like this make Republican voters turn to Donald Trump. The problem is that Trump said last month that he would keep the deal with the vow to “police” it. Policed by whom? UN inspectors? Our troops? A congressional delegation led by Bob Corker? By the way, this is the same Trump who implored President Bush to negotiate with Mahmoud Ahmadinejad back in 2007.

That same year, as he launched his presidential campaign, Barack Obama argued that negotiating with Iran was like Reagan negotiating with the Soviets. Except that the Soviets had Mikhail Gorbachev (and, of course, we had Reagan). Where is Iran’s Gorbachev? If anyone thinks Rouhani is a Persian Gorby, they are sadly mistaken.

The point here is that negotiating a deal, nuclear or otherwise, with the Iranian regime in its present form, is a fool’s errand. The foolishness begins and ends with President Obama. Unfortunately, he was aided and abetted by Bob Corker.
