Will John Brennan Get Away With It?

Attorney General Bill Barr, speaking to Fox News about the Obama administration’s spying upon the Trump campaign, said, “What happened to him was one of the greatest travesties in American history. Without any basis they started this investigation of his campaign. And even more concerning actually is what happened after the campaign, a whole pattern of events while he was president … to sabotage the presidency — or at least had the effect of sabotaging his presidency.”

The Obama administration official most responsible for this travesty is former CIA director John Brennan. John Durham, the prosecutor whom Barr assigned to examine Spygate, is said to be focusing on Brennan. It would appear that Durham has multiple grounds on which to indict him. We are told by the Wall Street Journal that Durham is looking into Brennan’s use of the Steele dossier and his attempts to influence the intelligence community’s assessment of Russian interference in the election.

Brennan’s CIA was a gusher of leaks before and after the election.

Let’s hope Durham is also still examining the origins of the travesty to which Barr referred — that the initial investigation into the Trump campaign “had no basis” to it. It was Brennan who initiated the sham investigation, which rested upon nothing more than flaky tips he claimed to have received from foreign intelligence agencies, from Estonia to Great Britain. It was Brennan and the Trump-hating Peter Strzok (the FBI’s liaison to the CIA, who received a special award from Brennan) who cooked up schemes to infiltrate the campaign, such as having a Cambridge academic, Stefan Halper, try and entrap George Papadopoulos. And it was Brennan who criminally leaked information about the FBI investigation into Trump to the former Nevada senator Harry Reid.

Brennan’s CIA was a gusher of leaks before and after the election. Even Peter Strzok couldn’t believe the flagrancy of the leaking. Referring to the CIA as “our sisters,” he said to his mistress, Lisa Page, “our sisters have begun leaking like mad. Scorned and worried and political, they’re kicking in to overdrive.”

The “leaking like mad” began at the top with Brennan, who was desperate to dirty up Trump before election day. Toward that end, he contacted Reid in the summer of 2016 to let him know about the FBI’s investigation into the Trump campaign for alleged collusion with Russia. Reid has told reporters that Brennan used him as the conduit for that leak against Trump during the campaign: “Why do you think he called me?”

Reid broadcast the leak to the media, but even a ruthless partisan like him found Brennan’s “ulterior motive” for a senatorial briefing unusual, as he explained to David Corn and Michael Isikoff in their book Russian Roulette. Corn and Isikoff write that Reid “had concluded the CIA chief believed the public needed to know about the Russian operation, including the information about the possible links to the Trump campaign.”

This seems like an open-and-shut case of criminal leaking. And then there is Brennan’s perjury before Congress. Recall Brennan’s denial of knowledge of the Hillary-financed Steele dossier. Brennan said that he didn’t know who financed it, and he said that he never made use of it. Never mind that Reid had told Brennan about the Steele dossier in the summer of 2016, as did Steele’s old colleagues in British intelligence, whose role in feeding Brennan information about alleged Trump — Russia ties depended at least in part on Steele’s dossier. Peter Strzok would have also told Brennan about Steele’s role in Crossfire Hurricane. And then there is the inconvenient fact that Inspector General Michael Horowitz has established that the intelligence community’s assessment of Russian interference in the election made use of the Steele dossier.

Brennan, utterly unrepentant, continues to bleat about Russian meddling in the 2016 election. But its meddling had nothing on his. The government that interfered the most in the election was the Obama administration, led by a CIA director full of rage towards Trump and eager to impress Hillary Clinton. Were Brennan not protected by the ruling class, he probably would have been indicted already. But let’s hope Sean Hannity — who predicts the Brennan scandal will “blow wide open” — and others are correct and Durham finally gives Brennan the justice he is due.
